To have turned down Munjaro?

In 2020 I was diagnosed with type two diabetes;I have since then lost 6st in weight to try to help;I was huge at 5ft 4in and a whooping 22st 10lbs.

Roll on now;unfortunately despite my weight loss I’m really struggling with my diabetes at the moment; My blood sugars are really high even when I’m not touched anything sugary.

I’m currently on insulin and statins for high cholesterol.I’ve been told multiple times in the last few months I’m at risk of early death.

which is why I’m wondering if I was right today to have turned down munjaro jabs when offered them during a routine treatment review today.

I know I need to lose more weight;I’ve been doing slimming on and off for a few years but I’m terrified of the munjaro jabs;I know people who have suffered terrible side effects from these jabs plus weight gain after stopping the jabs and I’m not liking the things I’m hearing in the media about it.

I saw another pharmacist at my GP surgery a few months ago that I don’t normally see and he said to me that he doesn’t personally recommend Munjaro as there is evidence it causes hepatitis.

Welcome to the club OP! And yes they almost certainly will settle after a day or two. Pepto bismol is your friend.

It seems mad to me that you’ll take statins and insulin, but not mounjaro based on …. Not quite sure what, media hype?

have you looked at the side effects of statins?

and the side effects of uncontrolled blood glucose?

mounjaro is a safe & effective treatment for many, in your case the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Furthermore, there seems to be some evidence that statins can actually help to create the metabolic conditions in which type 2 diabetes emerges.

I'm 2lb away from losing 3 stone since last week of February.

I make sure I drink 3ltrs of water a day. I've found chia seeds to be a massive help to keep me regular lol and try and hit your protien goals every day.

Heard some baseless scaremongering stories on the radio today, but I'd like to delve more into them as I highly doubt the reason 6 people have died is due to MJ.

I also think that people with issues from it, are not looking after themselves properly whilst using it (i.e. not drinking enough water, eating shite, under eating)

Crikeyalmighty · 26/06/2025 12:08

@NoVibrato I am on statins but will only take half a dose 3 times a week - this still has some effect , but I found taking it every day at full dose gave me really weak legs and arms and I felt lousy -and I’ve been on 2 different types with same effect .

Good for you - are you pleased with that? I know I would be.

How are the side effects now after your 2nd jab?

I found they were worse on the lowest dose right at the start and had a little blip (burps and farts - although the farts were not smelly) on the 2nd day after each injection. I have now just ordered my 4th pen I have gone up a dose each month and rarely any burps and farts now - will take 10mg tomorrow.

I have lost 2st 4lb whicg has knocked 6 points off my BMI.

I am doing intermittent fasting, one meal a day (as my metabolism is knackered due to meno, yo-yo dieting and hypo thyroidism) and low carb - this has stripped belly fat - my arms and legs are still fat but my abdomen is now flat - this tells me that I am not losing muscle and bone.

Well done on accessing and reading up on the science to weigh up the cost/benefit to you personally.

Do you have any interim goals and rewards for those goals?

AccidentalPrawnYouFool · 26/06/2025 13:14

Hepatitis? Did the pharmacist mean pancreatitis?

YANBU to turn it down but there’s a lot of fear mongering. In my opinion being obese has far more health risks than taking a medication for a short period.

AccidentalPrawnYouFool · 26/06/2025 13:18

I see the thread has moved on! Apologies. Congrats on your immense first week loss @Uberella!!!

SilenceInside · 26/06/2025 13:21

@AccidentalPrawnYouFool there was a useful post earlier in the thread, where it was pointed out that hepatitis just means a liver inflammation. Many people associate the term with viral liver diseases, but they're not the only cause.

So, Mounjaro could cause liver inflammation, but it wasn't reported in any of the research trials. There's one possible case that has been written up, so it may be an extremely rare side effect. Or it may have been unrelated to the Mounjaro. Either way, it is odd for a pharmacist to warn someone off an appropriate medication for their condition by mentioning a possible and/or extremely rare complication.

Hepatitis is liver inflammation

Can be viral. Can be alcohol related. Can be medication related

There is a possibility you could 'get hepatitis' from mounjaro, there is a report in the literature, but it seems very rare. Poorly controlled diabetes will put more strain on the liver, but still it's not an eyeroll situation

Edited

Agreed. The ‘hilarity’ is making me cringe. Many things can cause liver inflammation. I expect many people are thinking about Hep B etc.
