I don't care whether it's appreciated or not.

I'm quoting facts.

According to the Centre for Ageing Better, around two million UK pensioners are living in poverty. Of these 2.1 million pensioners, 55% are in deep poverty and 29% in very deep poverty.
That is 16 % of all older people in poverty or one in six of everyone in later life.

I bet they'd love to be in a 4 star hotel with all their needs met.

And that's mostly down to pensioners not claiming all the benefits they're entitled to.

And your evidence of that is?

Why do people think that they’re all in four star hotels? I’ve been in hotels and B&B which offer temporary accommodation to homeless people and they tend to be very, very basic. You’d really not be wanting to go there on your holidays. I’m imagining the asylum seeker ones will be similar and I’ve no reason to think otherwise. Maybe I’m missing something?

5 hotels on coast being used to 'house asylum seekers'

Asylum seekers have been thought to have been housed in three hotels in Skegness for around 10 months

Not bad for criminals that have broken into this country?

And if they are so hard up why are they smoking?

Toileteries are free.

Toiletries are not free according to gov.uk, However some charities provide them to some asylum seekers

Ratafia · 31/08/2025 11:01

I find Farage inherently sleazy. He's also demonstrably a hypocrite - look at the way he lives abroad as a tax dodge, and draws his salary as an MP whilst not doing constituency work. I don't understand how anyone can vote for him.

Ratafia · 31/08/2025 11:06

I've seen an account of someone who booked into a hotel that was being used to house immigrants - apparently it was some sort of mistake and his booking shouldn't have been taken, but when he turned up there was nothing else available. Apparently the room was grubby with very basic and fairly battered furniture, the bedlinen wasn't any too clean, it was noisy because so many rooms were housing whole families or cramming several strangers in togethers, the breakfast was basic cereal and bread with teabags and coffee to make your own drink, and he absolutely hated it. As he pointed out, he at least had the benefit of his own room and could escape after one night.

Anyone who thinks living conditions like that are luxurious has very low standards.

Ratafia · 31/08/2025 11:07

You can bet that the facilities offered to asylum seekers would in no way qualify any of those hotels for stars currently.

poetryandwine · 31/08/2025 11:10

I did. All five hotels listed are 2 and 3 stars with quite mediocre ratings on tripadvisor.

That was before they were rejigged for asylum seekers which involves lower hygiene standards, truly awful catering standards - when food is provided - etc

Not bad for criminals who shouldn't be here and haven't paid a penny into the system.

Pensioners get £230 pw for everything.
That's housing, furnishings, poll tax, food, clothes, toileteries, heating, TV and utilities.

They aren't criminals. If granted asylum, they will undoubtedly be working and paying plenty into the system. You only have to go to an NHS hospital to see how very dependent we are on immigration.

No-one pays poll tax.

Most pensioners have occupational pensions, and additionally are free to work.

They’re free in foodbanks because they’ve been donated.

So that tells me that no-one is telling these Seniors their rights, whereas as soon as migrants arrive in UK they are told very clearly what they can claim. Or maybe the traffickers clue them up on what they can get?

"Two tier" assistance it seems with our own citizens at the back of the queue.

Yvette Cooper has already gone on record as saying that the needs of asylum seekers come before the needs of our own citizens.

Yes,
So some generous people are paying twice.
Once in taxes to house and feed these people and again via foodbanks

themoonandtenbob · 31/08/2025 12:21

@Ratafia "They aren't criminals"

If they have entered the country illegally they are criminals

"If granted asylum, they will undoubtedly be working and paying plenty into the system" Not if they can't speak English.

"Most pensioners have occupational pensions, and additionally are free to work"

Only 47% of pensioners have occupational pensions. Yes, they can work but only if they are well enough.
Some started work at 15 and don't want to work any longer, certainly not until 66.

Well food banks are charities. Those providing toiletries would provide them to everyone. This has nothing to do with being an asylum seeker.

Asylum hotels may provide shampoo and shower gel or soap. According to testimony at committees.parliament.uk they seldom provide both. Luxuries such as deodorant, toothpaste, dental floss or similar, emollient cream, SPF, etc are well beyond the scope of provision.

That is not quite correct.

The foodbank in my town will only supply asylum seekers with toiletries if they can prove their status.
Other people need to have a letter from their Social Worker/Health Visitor or GP to say they are "needy".

They certainly don't provide them to "everybody" as you claim.

Not at all - there have been numerous and varied campaigns by government to encourage pensioners to make sure they're getting everything they're entitled to. Mse and Moneybox on R4 frequently have segments on the subject, as do the money pages of the press (especially the DM 😁). After winter fuel payments were discontinued last year there was a concerted effort by govt to encourage people to apply for extra benefits like pension credit. There was an uptick in applications at that point. Social care also encourage people to apply for added benefits - DMum found out she was entitled to attendance allowances and was helped to complete the forms by a district nurse.

Be as pedantic as you like. It ought to be obvious that the core of my statement was that food banks do not restrict the distribution of toiletries to asylum seekers. Anyone qualified by poverty is equally welcome to them.

Your statement attempting to catch me out validates this.

BTW my only difficulty in providing you sources as requested above is in limiting the number. They are coming soon. But I feel sure you expected no less

hellonuranus · 31/08/2025 12:50

Can anyone please explain to me why the government allows such illegal immigration? How are they benefitting from it?
Is it a long play - get people in and documented to plug the gaps our own low birth rate will inevitably leave?
Just why is it allowed to happen?

hellonuranus · 31/08/2025 12:51

I'm talking about the illegal economic migration. Not actual asylum seekers.

Yes good point.

So these immigrants are arriving on boats and then what? Claiming asylum and getting house in a hotel? I don't suppose they're calling themselves economic migrants are they?
