To stop my son from presenting as Jewish at school

1000 replies

Wonderberry · 13/05/2025 00:52

I really wish this wasn't the case.

My son wants to wear his kippah (skullcap) at school. This is entirely his choice, and something that he has chosen to start wearing recently. He just wants to express his religious and cultural background.

Unfortunately, I don't feel like he would be safe to do so. I hate that this is where we are at currently in the UK, but I know it is the reality. He goes to a community school in London, and doesn't understand why he cannot wear his kippah at school. On cultural days, he also cannot share his culture either.

As much as I am on the side of 'the jews', I don't think wearing any clothing with religious connotations should be permitted in schools.

What would be really great is if a group of his classmates all started wearing kippahs in class to show solidarity!

...in a diverse London school, no record of antisemitism at all?

Yes! They should!

Wow, you've never personally experienced antisemitism so guess it doesn't exist. That's great news.

Surely this is one of the other kids’ awful parents? Kids don’t generally know the origins of random surnames. What is wrong with people…

Sadly the racism is passed down from parents.

If you have no further points to make just leave it at that. Name calling just undermines the point you are trying to make.
You will come across people who disagree with you in life. So will I. That's ok. It's healthy in fact.

In real life you are probably surrounded by people who only share your views. It can be jarring when you engage more widely and realise that not everyone shares your views, and that some of the things you believe simply are, may not be.

I have been in that place from childhood. But its a good process. Questioning things that you believe just are, is healthy.

I will absolutely rise above your nasty little outburst.

Me calling you names is what…. Worse than you being openly antisemitic? Are you a narcissist? Because your responses make you look like you are. A Jew tells you you’re being antisemitic and you’re… denying it?? Just apologise! You’re being OFFENSIVE! Just stop it! That’s all you need to do.
Name calling….

Imagine telling a black person they are paranoid about racist attacks. Where are all the Mnetters normally calling everyone racists? You've got blatant antisemitism going on here.

gingerelephant · 13/05/2025 19:51

OP I feel sad that you are worried about this but totally understand why you feel worried. I would like to live in a country where Jewish people can wear clothing that is in keeping with their faith without fear.

Well. That's a very unusual, diverse secondary school indeed. How fortunate for you.

Yes my DD told me a girl in her class made a comment about Jewish people having big noses... apparently her grandmother had told her that

I have taught in specialist autism settings were kids have absolutely no filter. And the things they have picked up from their parents are awful... "I'm not sitting by her she's a P* she'll stink of curry" " I can't be his friend because he's black and my dad said he doesn't t like black people".

I sadly think all forms of racism are on the rise of the last 5-10 years.

The hat? I can just see the disdain with which you wrote that charming sentence. Pull the other one. You've got an agenda and I sense some sock puppetry going on.

You said she was "paranoid"? I'm sure that you must have read about the escalation of antisemitic attacks in the last 2 years? Seen the statistics?

I am very certain that you have heard or seen antisemitism without realising it. I mean, I personally had my locker singled out and covered in anti-Israel stickers after 9/11 (yes, didn't make sense to me either) just because I'm Jewish. I was 13 and hadn't even been to Israel in living memory.

That was an anti-Semitic act at school. There were many more, but I suspect this is the kind of thing you will have encountered without even realising it.

I think when you are part of a religion, the sym bolic items that are holy to you are just items to others, the various holy books, rosary beads, crucifixes (I know the names for the catholic ones because I grew up in a Catholic family, I don't know the names for specific garment and on other faiths because eof lack of familiarity). It might be disdain, but it might not.

The OP and others have referenced the correct name. I would always try to use the correct terminology.

What atrocities do you think I am justifying?

What an awful thing to say.

There’s no point arguing with this one. Her comments are horrific and rather than check herself and apologise for being offensive, she keeps going and even claims to be a victim. I’m rarely stunned but her comments, attitude and lack of humility have me holding my head in horror.
