To stop my son from presenting as Jewish at school

1000 replies

Wonderberry · 13/05/2025 00:52

I really wish this wasn't the case.

My son wants to wear his kippah (skullcap) at school. This is entirely his choice, and something that he has chosen to start wearing recently. He just wants to express his religious and cultural background.

Unfortunately, I don't feel like he would be safe to do so. I hate that this is where we are at currently in the UK, but I know it is the reality. He goes to a community school in London, and doesn't understand why he cannot wear his kippah at school. On cultural days, he also cannot share his culture either.

I guess i just dont understand the huge focus on Palestine from my secular western peers. There are genocides and atrocities happening the world over. What is it about Palestine that creates such a club-like feel? Why don't we have weekly free Ukraine rallies and marches?

It's Jerusalem and Al aqsa mosque that prompts such emotion in Muslims. It is their third holiest place. You don't see them feeling the same about the rohingya or the uyghurs. They don't consider them Muslim cos they aren't middle Eastern.. ironically jewish people feel very strongly about the uyghurs

The left sees Israel as an symbol of American expansionism in the region and they dislike America having an interventionist approach. It's cold war logic in a way.

Ooh careful. You’ll be telling us we run the media in a sec..

Can you please explain the connection. Simply and step by step. Because you have absolutely lost me here.

Jen579 · 13/05/2025 19:35

Could you speak to his school about your concerns and see what they say? I think it's really, really tricky and it may be safest just to not let him wear it unfortunately. Is there a safe place where he can meet his other friends that wear it and they can all wear them together?

I think the most hideous thing about all this is having to try to explain to a very young, innocent child why he can't wear it.

I find this thread so upsetting. Firstly that OP even has to worry about this. What is the world coming to? I’m not surprised and I would feel the same way. But it’s awful. And secondly, the rampant and blatant anti semitism within this thread that is taking over. It is terrifying to be Jewish in 2025.

That is really shit. I hope that my defending the Gaza protests isn't confused with condemning this.
Sadly, I think many forms of prejudice and racism are on the rise.

My step daughter was attacked in the aftermath of the Southport killings and riots simply because she is of south Asian appearance.
It's horrific. She is still deeply traumatised by it. Please don't tell me what it is like to have to protect your children.

But the fact that people are openly opposing Israel's actions does not equate to a risk against Jewish people.

I have been on Free Gaza marches and there were Jewish people in very traditional attire (I don't know the names of the garments) and some who weren't with placards identifying themselves as Jewish. The marches are based on wanting to save innocents and stop oppression not hating Jews. And the people protesting in this way should categorically not be interpreted as a risk.
In the same way that's it's ridiculous to interpret a nurse with a free Gaza badge as Jew hating and a risk to their patients. The idea that parents are teaching their children that this poses a risk just entrenches this for a further generation.

The hate marches have been the source and encouragement of much vile racism against Jews.

why do you personally go on the hate marches? Why is Israel of so much interest to you? If you’re south Asian why don’t you protest the horrendous human rights abuses and killings in Pakistan? Or Afghanistan?

Ah so garden variety racism is ok, as long as it's not antisemitism.

Statistics don't lie whether you like them or not.

Unfortunately you are wrong. Obviously racist children are just repeating what they hear at home but they hear and repeat plenty. And they have older siblings to join in too.

User46576 · 13/05/2025 19:41

And “free Gaza” is explicit support for anti semitic tropes. Nurses should not be wearing badges supporting any political statement never mind a terrorist enclave based on values of racial supremacy!

You are wrong. Children of all ages use racist tropes they get from home, or from older siblings or unsupervised use of the Internet.

Sadly you’re wrong. Kids can be racist- often they are repeating their parents opinions

Yes my DD told me a girl in her class made a comment about Jewish people having big noses... apparently her grandmother had told her that

This is heartbreaking.

We are not Jewish, but have a Baltic surname that is often mistaken for being Jewish. My son has been called names and bullied for a being “a Jew”. School did sort it, but I feel it was more a “they aren’t Jewish” that stopped it rather the kids learning antisemitism is wrong

Surely this is one of the other kids’ awful parents? Kids don’t generally know the origins of random surnames. What is wrong with people…

I think you may need to revisit your somewhat extraordinary claim. Apart from the lived experiences of Jews on here, my experience as a non Jewish teacher, and other posters, perhaps have a look at the statistics for antisemitic attacks, which sadly, have increased significantly in the last 2 years.

How many Jewish children have you taught? Because my children are the only ones in both their schools - so 2/1200. Could easily never teach either of them and teach here for years.

if you look through any of the past many pages you’ll see plenty of examples of things happening to Jewish children in school. Or indeed just google it!

It is. I live in a smallish community. I changed jobs (not to do with antisemitism) and decided it best to hide my religion/culture at work. I moved my mezuzot inside and keep myself to myself. It’s the same as it was in my grandparents days , if not worse

I’m not sure what you mean. You’ve never heard of its existence? Or never heard of an incident at your school? I’m so confused.
