Today is the big day.

I'm running my first public half marathon (the Great Bristol Run).

2 years 3 weeks ago, I was 4 stone heavier, and couldn't run for even 1 minute.

My then 2yo DS ran away from me in the supermarket and I couldn't catch him. A random shopper had to get him.

I vowed that I had to change. That Friday (Coronation Day) I got up really early, put on a pair of walking sandals, and did the first Couch 2 5K.

It nearly killed me. That night I had a huge nosebleed, the next day I could hardly walk.

But, I persisted. Purchased trainers, got to the end of C25K, and could run for 30 mins, but nowhere near 5k.

Started an exercise class over the winter, and last spring, re-did C25K.

Completed my first 5K public run.

Started to push a bit harder, and by the end of last summer, I could run 10k without stopping.

This winter, I actually kept up with running, and in January, I first hit 15k

Last month, I did my first sub-30 min 5k.

Last month, I ran the full half marathon distance (21.1k). I plug myself into my music, and run to give my mind time to think and process.

Today, I am facing my demons, and running this with other people. I don't know the course, I never run with anyone else around me. It's going to be hot and noisy. I'm worried about getting there, and pacing myself, and how much water to drink.

But,

I'm so proud of how far I have come. From 1min to 2h 30min (at least) non-stop running. I feel healthier sexier and happier.

My DC are coming to cheer me on. I want to make them proud of me.

Good luck!! You will do great!!

Just a word of warning...this might be your first but I bet it's not your last. You may as well just pay all of your salary to the race organisers from now on 🤣🤣

Never a truer word spoken in jest!

Yes. I will be doing that again. And the Bath Half. Will see which others I can find too...

Am home now, clean and dry, with a cracking thunderstorm rolling over the valley.

The support of the crowds was brilliant, but slightly strange to hear so many people calling out my name (on my race number).

Thank you, all of you today, you lifted me. I can't think I've ever see a thread before with only support!

Haha it's a nightmare! I ran the London Landmarks half back in April, injured and was thinking maybe I should take a break, let me injury heal...

4 weeks today I'm doing a 20 mile and I'm saying maybe this will be it, maybe I'll take a break but I have 2 more races booked and several more I have my eye on for the rest of the year and today my injury is feeling so much better 🤔

Congratulations, you did great!!!

That’s just brilliant- congratulations!

goodthinking99 · 11/05/2025 21:18

Brilliant achievement! Well done StarStarStarStarStar I’ve done the C25K about four times now but haven’t managed to get past that no matter how encouraging Sarah Milliken is. You should be really proud of yourself, and your PB…you’ve inspired me to start again…again!

MakingSpaceForJoy · 12/05/2025 19:56

Well done. You are awesome. We knew you’d smash it ⭐️

SquirrelsInSpace · 13/05/2025 10:17

So... a marathon next????????

Chumssss · 24/05/2025 18:59

Massive well done to you! What an achievement, you should be so proud. I know you posted this a couple of weeks ago, but I just wanted to come back and say well done and thank you. Thanks to your post I decided that I was going to start the Couch 2 5k, something I’d thought about before but never actually done. I started week three today and ran for three minutes - twice! - something I haven’t done for years. It’s hard, but I feel so good about it and it really is all because of your inspiring post. So, a huge well done and an even huger thank you to you from me!x

Awww, that's made me all teary!

Well done for getting started. The first run was my hardest, just the mental leap I had to take to get out there.

Keep running!

I'm just running for the joy of it now, no goals, no targets.

You’re amazing, OP.

picnicfuntimes · 26/05/2025 23:57

As previous posters have said - your message might just be the thing that makes me get my trainers back out. Completed the C25K 6 years ago, after not finishing week 1 about 3 times over the previous decade. Got as far as 10k once then stopped - have regretted it ever since. Probably 5 stone heavier now but it’s been niggling me that I need to do it again. Congratulations on an awesome pb and thank you for sharing your story. Look at the ripple effect you’ve had!

rollerblind · 27/05/2025 02:44

huge congratulations xx
