Today is the big day.

I'm running my first public half marathon (the Great Bristol Run).

2 years 3 weeks ago, I was 4 stone heavier, and couldn't run for even 1 minute.

My then 2yo DS ran away from me in the supermarket and I couldn't catch him. A random shopper had to get him.

I vowed that I had to change. That Friday (Coronation Day) I got up really early, put on a pair of walking sandals, and did the first Couch 2 5K.

It nearly killed me. That night I had a huge nosebleed, the next day I could hardly walk.

But, I persisted. Purchased trainers, got to the end of C25K, and could run for 30 mins, but nowhere near 5k.

Started an exercise class over the winter, and last spring, re-did C25K.

Completed my first 5K public run.

Started to push a bit harder, and by the end of last summer, I could run 10k without stopping.

This winter, I actually kept up with running, and in January, I first hit 15k

Last month, I did my first sub-30 min 5k.

Last month, I ran the full half marathon distance (21.1k). I plug myself into my music, and run to give my mind time to think and process.

Today, I am facing my demons, and running this with other people. I don't know the course, I never run with anyone else around me. It's going to be hot and noisy. I'm worried about getting there, and pacing myself, and how much water to drink.

But,

I'm so proud of how far I have come. From 1min to 2h 30min (at least) non-stop running. I feel healthier sexier and happier.

My DC are coming to cheer me on. I want to make them proud of me.

@IpsyUpsyDaisyDoosit helped my knees. Stopped now, but regret it almost daily. From a one minute killer to managing 10K. I started late 50s. The post run buzz is something else.

I wish it would help mine, but the arthritis in our family is rife and I was in pain for two weeks after run 6. Too high impact for my knees according to the doctor.

Well done YOU!!

Good luck and enjoy it.

Even when I was fit and healthy (def not now!) and did hockey and netball I hated just running for the sake of running. So im deadly impressed with people who can/do!

ThereWillBeGold · 11/05/2025 08:41

Well done OP, that's fantastic!
I've been a runner on and since school, I've never been that fast but I don't care as long as I'm doing it.
Back into it again after being injured, did Parkrun yesterday. I do a bit of walking during it which I think helps me to catch my breath.
Good luck in the race today, its very warm so you will need plenty of fluids, sweets or whatever you think.

AFingerofFudge · 11/05/2025 08:42

NautilusLionfish · 11/05/2025 08:50

What an inspiration. I did c25k last year, injured my knee towards the end (completed the c25k) and that combined with winter made me go back to my lazy self. Been trying to motivate myself but haven't. I am no inspired (she says typing in her bed)

MrsMitford3 · 11/05/2025 08:54

Wow you should be so proud!

Great example to your DC and what a powerful way to change your life.

However today goes-and it's a hot one- all that matters is that you did it!

Please come tell us after!!

Clarissaclaire · 11/05/2025 09:02

OP you are an inspiration! Hope you have a great run. Come back and tell us all about it. X

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 11/05/2025 09:02

Well, I've arrived in Bristol, parked up and am now walking to the start line.

The 10K runners are already on the roads, I've seen the hill (Tower Hill, funny that) up to Castle Park.

Thank you all, so much, for your messages. I don't really talk about my running in real life, but it has had such a positive impact.

For almost all this time, I've been running with generic supermarket trainers. 2 months ago, I bit the bullet, and got proper running trainers fitted. They make such a difference to the impact on my knees.

2 years ago, even last year, I'd have laughed you out of the room, if you suggested I could run a half marathon. When I started C25K, I'd not run in more than 20 years (since school PE).

I can already hear people cheering the 10K runners, and the music!

Sitting here drinking my first coffee of the day and first thread I clicked on and you’ve put a massive smile on my face. Well done, op. Running is no easy feat. I only do parkrun after 5 years of running but there’s no way I could run this far. Wishing you the very best of luck. Hope you enjoy it and have a good celebration at the end. 🙏🏻👏🏻
