What can labour do about immigration?

CrispyEye · 11/05/2025 05:57

Current poles showing Reform is way ahead of labour now. I’m so worried Reform will win the next general election if Labour don’t get a grip on this issue. And I say that as a Tory voter.

Realistically, what can Labour do, what should they be doing and do we think they will do it?

I thought we were discussing the current Labour government, they certainly didn't just aim for the WC(?) vote in the last election, they are Centrists, at least they were, if they start emulating Reform, they will lose those Voters.

Yes, but it’s not a right verses left wing issue. Until Brexit, it was usually seen as the other way around. Corbyn was a lifelong euro skeptic for this reason. There are plenty of leftwing people who are anti immigration even now, including many Reform voters. Labour shifted its stance, not its core voter base.

This in spades. It’s like the fear-mongering that if you tax the rich more, they’ll simply leave. It’s almost as though it’s a way to keep the masses fixated on certain things and to vote against their best interests.

Did you miss the bit where they are actually leaving. Or do you not do facts?

EasternStandard · 11/05/2025 15:19

‘Smash the gangs’ is seeing it go in the opposite direction so that’s unlikely.

Sorry so what you mean is that Starmer isn't stopping the small boats. No he's not.

But my point is that even if he did, Reform voters will find fault in it. They moan about all the successes of the UK as if it's not enough / not the right thing / ulterior motive etc etc. Theyve been poisoned. Even Labour trade deals have been shit on but I don't see how anyone else would have done better.

Also - Reform voters don't like facts because they are unable to critically engage on Brexit.

People just don't like Labour / Starmer. I do, I think they are with faults but our best option.

andtheworldrollson · 11/05/2025 15:24

taxing the well off raises taxes to a point overall even if sone leave - not every higher earner has left Scotland as evidence . indeeed you get higher earners living a mile from the border

Araminta1003 · 11/05/2025 15:24

I think a lot of people have made a lot of money housing immigrants, organising NHS immigrant staff (nurses, care workers etc) via agency and it has been a big gravy train, whilst at the same time the powers to be have failed to train the right people for those jobs here and failed to pay them a proper salary.
There are millions of immigrants who are hugely beneficial to the country and pay in vast amounts over many years and then there are some, that are a big drain on the system and even some who are criminals or in grooming gangs.
The trick is clearly to differentiate between the good type of immigrant that we welcome and need and the wrong type of immigrant that we do not want and so we need a lot of checks on the latter and they do need to be returned if they commit serious crimes. No country wants its prisons filled with foreign nationals at a huge cost to the system. 1 in 8 prisoners are foreign nationals. Labour need to start there. 12 per cent apparently.

People who voted Reform did so because they want something done about the high levels of illegal immigrants coming here. As yet, we don’t know what their solution is!

Well maybe they shouldn't, maybe they should look at this holistically as Reform are just angry with everyone not just immigrants.

Locutus2000 · 11/05/2025 15:15

I noticed in the news today that Graham king, who owns hundreds of immigration hotels, has just become a billionaire. Great.

It's been a lucrative gravy train for the privileged few.

That’s why governments of all colours are so in favour of open borders. So their cronies can cash in on public money.

The UK is at least as thick and self-serving as the US electorate, if not more so
@WooleyMunky
Noooooooo, we can't be as dumb as them ding-a-lings, surely😱

Ahem, 'Brexit'?
The support from the electorate for the 'ooh, that didn't age well' Farage?
Eurovision still being a thing?

Yes, the UK is that dumb.

It still shrinks the economy because the tax situation is not conducive to taking a risk on growing a business and employing new staff. You have to be very confident of success to take the plunge. We need a more dynamic economy that creates jobs.

People, placemark comments like these. So you can see these righteous people laughing on the other side of their faces when Reform form the next government. Then these ‘smart’, sanctimonious lefties will be squealing, just like they were after Brexit, and still are.

But they never learn.

Parker231 · 11/05/2025 15:31

Watermelonice · 11/05/2025 12:42

That is a separate issue. The fact is we have enough of our own to support without adding hundreds/thousands more who are a net drain.

There is something on the news today about limiting legal visas for overseas workers (much larger numbers than the asylum seekers). Less care workers coming into the UK so more British workers from the unemployed register will have to do these jobs and at least this will reduce the unemployment costs.

GreyCarpet · 11/05/2025 15:31

EggyPeggy99 · 11/05/2025 06:26

Farage was behind Brexit. Do you remember how better off we would be, how much more money for the nHS there would be? How did it turn out?

Ignore reform. I am.

I'm not sure it's wise to ignore them.

People ignored him and his nonsense over Brexit and look what happened...

Yes, I know he was, that's why Labour with Corbyn as the Leader of the Labour party couldn't win a general election. They became more centrist to win the election just like they did in 1997!

A left wing Reform Voter is an Oxymoron, have you read their policies? How are Reform left wing?

Labour shifting its stance has won a different voting demographic which they would certainly lose if emulating Reform!

Bug90 · 11/05/2025 15:33

immigration should be primarily about what that person can offer our country imo. Do they have a professional qualification and skills that are in demand and can therefore make a meaningful contribution to our society? Do they have a firm grasp of the language or at least willing to learn? Do they respect our customs and traditions? Do they want to integrate with the indigenous population? Can they support themselves financially and not be a burden on that state?

If it’s a yes to the above then I’m sure the vast majority of people would support a level of immigration but that’s clearly not what is happening at the moment is it?

What do people need to learn?

Do we need to believe Reform are a good idea? Why?

Blimey that was easily sold in. The care worker thing is Labour panicking about Reform. Costs going up will be incredibly tough after NI went up.

Araminta1003 · 11/05/2025 15:36

Labour are also specifying now that skilled foreign workers need a degree, except in IT, construction and engineering. I hope employers can check the validity of foreign degrees quite easily. I am assuming they have to contact the institutions independently like any reference.
Perhaps this will help the UK uni sector indirectly.

Is Farage a working class hero then? A stockbroker's son that attended Dulwich College FFS who are you kidding, yourself it seems!

You don’t need to believe anything. Just be prepared for a Reform government. The ‘stupid’ electorate will show you.

I hear Farage is still happy to collect his EU pension worth £73k a year, in a few years. Talk about GRIFTER

What your point? Are you looking forward to a Reform government yet. Shrieking and squealing about ‘big, bad’ Farage ain’t going to stop him.

Push back the boats.
Or take them to Rwanda .
Spain isn’t swamped by migrants from Africa despite being a stones throw away.
Netherlands, Belgium have control of migrants.
Do what they do.
Put immigrants in camps like the French, not in hotels.

Eh? I won't be squealing, personally. I'll be waiting to see how long it's going to take before you realise what you've done.

Chances are, I'll also be packing my bags and leaving you to your fate. I love my country, but I don't love it enough to stay at all costs.

You're welcome to keep the pile of shit that Reform will leave behind.
