I’ve been scammed - help please!

ARGH!
I was just browsing instagram and a makeup company called IL MAKIAGE were supposedly selling this primer for a £4.95 tester. Thought it looked good, signed up to try one. Next thing I know I’ve got email confirmation of my “£46” order and i suspect it’s a recurring payment - this is not something I agreed to or that was clear on the “try our tester” page I had been on. I have emailed customer services to ask for the order to be cancelled but received an automated message that due to how fast they ship orders cancellations aren’t possible, despite me having ordered it less than 5mins before this. I paid for this via PayPal - will they help me get my money back and any future charges they may try for the “recurring orders”that I didn’t sign up for?
I’m usually so careful about reading the small print of stuff and today I wasn’t and now I’m really annoyed with myself but also really worried I’m going to be getting charged money I really don’t have for makeup I don’t want, or going to have a nightmare getting it sorted.
Does anyone have experience of this sort of thing and can please advise?

Ring PayPal and possibly your bank and stop the payment

OneTaupeTraybake · 10/05/2025 19:29

Contact PayPal ASAP!

saveforthat · 10/05/2025 19:29

I've found PayPal really helpful in a similar scenario. You can dispute a payment online.

GraceUnderPresure · 10/05/2025 19:30

Phone your bank's anti fraud number, they should be able to stop this payment and future ones. Good luck, most of us have fallen for a scam at some point, they can be so clever.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 10/05/2025 19:30

Has it definitely taken the £46 payment? I looked at that a few weeks ago and the offer then was it’s free to try, and then after x amount of days you either post it back or they charge the full amount a

meganorks · 10/05/2025 19:33

I think Il Makiage is a legit company, so I'd go on their social media and Trustpilot and leave a comment about it. I think you'll find they respond quicker that way!

Maybe try PayPal first

Amba1998 · 10/05/2025 19:33

Il makiage are a legit company. They actually do a fantastic foundation. Just log in online with the details you used to order to cancel and cancel the subscription.

Ricecakesaremyjam · 10/05/2025 19:34

Thanks for your replies, I have tried calling PayPal and my bank but their call centres are only open until 6pm so I won’t be able to speak to anyone until tomorrow.

ExitPursuedByABare · 10/05/2025 19:35

Phone your bank. I fell for one recently. Only £3.99 but a recurring payment randomly set up.

Ricecakesaremyjam · 10/05/2025 19:37

@ExitPursuedByABare Will the bank definitely sort it and stop any payments?

sorry I am under so much stress at the moment (autistic 5yr old, lots of issues) and the last thing I need is to be stressing about being stupid enough to fall for a makeup scam. I really really do not have the money for this or the energy to have yet another battle on my hands

LumpyandBumps · 10/05/2025 19:43

If it’s a recurring payment via PayPal you should be able to just cancel future payments in your PayPal account. They do seem to be quite well hidden, however, so you need to delve deeply to find them.

Ricecakesaremyjam · 10/05/2025 19:50

@LumpyandBumps where do I find this please? Just had a look and not found this option? Thanks x

LumpyandBumps · 10/05/2025 19:59

I found this online. I always have to check guidance each time. This type of payment seems well hidden. ( image may take a while to upload)

I’ve been scammed - help please!
Ricecakesaremyjam · 10/05/2025 20:07

Does this mean I’ve cancelled the payment? (Sorry I’m aware I sound super thick, I’ve not had experience of this sort of thing before!)
thanks x

Yep, same thing happened to me the other evening. God knows why I fell for it - the offer of a freebie from Boots, only had to pay the postage, next thing I had an email from this company save-Lysta.Com asking me to finish signing up by paying £1.99. Replied immediately that I hadn't signed up for anything - and that email has vanished from my inbox, weirdly. Anyway, on Thursday evening I had notification that a payment for £42 had been stopped by Santander. It was to this company, who are based in Cyprus. Phoned the next day and v helpful bloke on the other end explained that this has happened a lot recently, with people thinking they were paying Boots. He cancelled my card, issued a new one and put a stop notification for this company on any future payments on any other cards "just in case" they could get to those details too. Lesson learned! If it seems too good to be true....it probably is! Hope you get it sorted :)

This OP. It's not a scam. You just didn't read the (not especially small) print.

I’ve bought from them before - they claim to be able to completely colour match a foundation to your skin tone with a questionnaire. I found the one they sent to me too yellow. They offer money back if you don’t like the product, which I was able to do for a full refund. Rest assured if PayPal can’t stop transaction, you can get your money back. Also distance selling regulations always allow you a 14 day cooling off period from receipt of item. So lots of avenues for recourse

doodleschnoodle · 10/05/2025 20:17

Il Makiage have good customer service I’ve found. The first one I got was wrong shade so they sent another one for free right away and told me to give the other one away to a friend or something.

I’ve never seen that offer advertised though!

Househunters1 · 10/05/2025 20:24

if this is the legit il makiage website then you haven’t been scammed. The end.

Ricecakesaremyjam · 10/05/2025 20:36

It was via instagram.

CoralOP · 10/05/2025 20:50

It's not a scam as such, my MIL have just set up a subscription to IL MAKIAGE and loves it.
You can return it for a refund if your not happy, it's quite visible when setting up the payment but a lot of people don't read it. Don't panic.

ARO0607 · 10/05/2025 20:54

They got me too!!! They advertise it as ‘try before you buy’ for £4.95, so you would think they means buying a sample. What they actually send you is a full sized product to try and you can return it if you don’t like it?! Baffling. Yes, they also sign you up for a subscription. I emailed and kicked up a fuss, but I was past the return point. No refund, they gave me site £50 site credit.. also baffling. To be fair the foundation was a perfect match, but very misleading and cheeky.

FizzyLemonSwizel · 10/05/2025 20:57

Yes…jump on to PayPal straight away and raise a dispute. They should be able to reverse the transaction.

I bought something online about 4 weeks ago which never arrived. It was a legit purchase but I now suspect is from a company in financial difficulty. I went into my banking app and raised a dispute for goods not received. The money was back in my account the next day.

I think that looks fine OP, but I’d still call PayPal tomorrow to check, and also email them today so there’s a paper trail.

VanCleefArpels · 10/05/2025 21:12

Il Makiage customer service is exemplary- the first foundation I ordered was wrong, they sent another shade and said keep the first one. Just contact them and they will sort it, no need to panic!
