To say he must take his watch off to change DS’s nappy?

I thought this was just usual and everyone did that?

OP posts:

I think you need to dial down your anxiety on this.

In my years of nappy changing, never got anything on a watch.

I did stop wearing my rings though, as the extra hand washing was causing irritation.

pikkumyy77 · 10/05/2025 11:50

You are extremely likely to loose a watch or jewelry when you are taking it off to change the baby while out of the house—or have to fight the baby for it as it is loose and near to hand. Safest place is on your hand or wrist where it belongs.

caringcarer · 10/05/2025 11:50

Maybe for a poonami but otherwise not necessary.

Purplecatshopaholic · 10/05/2025 11:51

It’s early for Most Barking Thread on MN today, but this might take it, lol

ShieldMaiden8 · 10/05/2025 12:01

That’s a new one.

Delphiniumandlupins · 10/05/2025 12:03

3 children, 3 grandchildren, random relatives and friends' children and I've only ever removed my watch to give to a wriggling child to distract them. Even with a poonami do you really get it past your wrist?

Ifailed · 10/05/2025 12:11

Fair play to the OP for getting the message with good grace.

Fargo79 · 10/05/2025 12:12

I've been changing nappies for 9 solid years now and I don't think I've ever got poo on my wrist. This seems like a very unlikely scenario and not worth the faff of removing and putting back on jewellery several times a day, every day.

WithOnlyTheMemories · 10/05/2025 11:43

Why?

... and who are you tell an adult what he must do?

JLou08 · 10/05/2025 12:16

I've dealt with some wriggley babies and toddlers during nappy changing. Never had dirt go as far as my wrist.

TryingToBeHelpful267 · 10/05/2025 12:19

😂

JoyousEagle · 10/05/2025 12:19

Even if you think it’s necessary (which I think is overkill, I’ve never got baby poo up my wrist) it’s definitely not something you can tell another adult they “must” do.

ThisOpenMauveLurker · 10/05/2025 12:19

It would be best practice for proper handwashing (ie clinically trained). Wouldn’t do it at home with my own child/grandchild though unless they seemed to have a stomach bug.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 10/05/2025 12:20

Good Lord, of all the ridiculous things to be fussing about. Everytime I open MN it seems to get dafter.

Even looking at this purely from childs welfare point of view it still doesnt make sense. He either leaves the child sitting in dirt for a while longer while he removes his watch and puts it somewhere safe. Or he holds the baby in a clumsy unsteady way while removing the watch. Or he waits til the baby is on the changing unit then removes the watch where the baby will probably grab it and lick it.

Picklepower · 10/05/2025 12:21

Even if he did get a bit of baby shit on his watch and washed it off with soap and water, what is the big deal there?

B1indEye · 10/05/2025 12:21

Do your babies roll around in the garden? Where would dirt be coming from?

BunnyRuddington · 10/05/2025 12:24

I wonder who the 3% that agree with tou are? Ive been changing nappies for as long as I can remember. Ive never once removed jewellery or watches or seen anyone else do it? I be more worried about leaving the items behind when your LO is a bit older and you might end up chasing them around a bit to do the change.

CantStopMoving · 10/05/2025 12:26

I never even took my jewellery off! Ooooops. Oh well everyone is still alive so I inadvertently have strengthened our immune systems!

ClairDeLaLune · 10/05/2025 12:27

😂 I’m sure OP clocked that!

chatgptsbestmate · 10/05/2025 12:28

I can sort of see that maybe sharp jewellery might scratch baby? I didn't remove jewellery though Blush

SparkyBlue · 10/05/2025 12:28

This has to be a piss take

Sirzy · 10/05/2025 12:30

Thinking it through my watch arm is “hold legs up” arm and the other hand does the wiping anyway (not that I ever ended up with a hand covered anyway, I found baby wipes better for wiping than my hand!)

Mt563 · 10/05/2025 12:32

You need to let him do things his way or he'll stop doing them if you're just controlling/ nagging. If baby is not in danger, leave him to it. He'll work out his own way and it'll be fine. Likely different to yours but fine.
