AIBU to go to the press after finding bird poo inside baby hat from George at Asda?

WARNING - George, Asda, baby clothes unsafe and dangerous!

I’m honestly still in shock and disgusted. I ordered a two pack of baby sun hats from George at Asda, and when I opened them, I found two separate bird poos inside one hat!!! Not just on the outside – inside the fabric where my baby’s head would go. And there was poo on the outside of both hats too.

It’s not just a hygiene issue, it’s a genuine health risk. Bird droppings can carry serious bacteria and diseases like salmonella, E. coli, and even psittacosis. The idea that this was meant to go on a baby’s head is horrifying.

Even worse – other items in the same parcel are now contaminated. This wasn’t a one-off mark. This was clear evidence that birds have been inside their stock or warehouse, and if it happened to my order, it could be happening to others. If they have birds, do they also have mice and rats?!

I contacted customer service expecting a serious response, but all I received was:

  • A refund for the hats
  • A £10 voucher

Not even a refund for the pack of bras that were in the same package. VILE. I was told to return them, but thinking about touching any of the items is making me sick!

That’s it. No escalation. No real investigation update. Just a generic apology.

This isn’t about money – it’s about safety. It’s absolutely unacceptable for a baby clothing supplier to be shipping out items in this condition. It makes me worry about how many other babies could be exposed if people don’t inspect and wash everything before using it.

PLEASE – if you’re buying baby clothes from George (or anywhere) – inspect and wash thoroughly before letting your baby wear them.

I’ve attached photos so you can see for yourself.
@GeorgeAtAsda @foodgov @WhichUK @UKGovcomms – this needs to be looked into properly.

Should I contact local media to raise awareness more widely? I feel this is being swept under the rug, and I’m truly shook, disgusted, and very concerned for other parents.

AIBU to go to the press after finding bird poo inside baby hat from George at Asda?

Fancy that. OP didn't return to her thread.

Except it to be gone for outting reasons any time soon.

Oh I'm sure she'll ask for it to be removed for "causing distress in real life". Either that or "the OP has had second thoughts about starting this thread" 🙄

MumWifeOther · 09/05/2025 19:52

This is why I wash anything new before wearing it.

I live by the sea. You would spontaneously combust if you saw the amount of seagull shit that lands pretty much everywhere here.

LOL. I have nesting sparrows and regularly have to re wash my laundry.

Looal · 09/05/2025 19:54

Pretty much all warehouses have various animals, birds, rat, mice.
my local b&m has bird shit literally all over it as they have birds living in the shop. Wash things before you put them on your body or in your body in the case of food. No need for the drama llama behavior of going to the press.

HangingOver · 09/05/2025 19:55

A seagull shat in my mouth when I was a child. I was fine, if I bit surprised.

Probably gone to call the head of the governor’s 😂😂😂

It's gross, definitely. I'd be escalating it further within the company.
That is pretty bad, imagine if it's on baby dummies or stuff they put in their mouth? Obviously they could easily catch something off the hat also.

If you sell the story to the Sun or whatever they'll probably give you a few hundred quid. But it's a bit cringe having to do a sad face photo with the product and millions of strangers scrutinising how legit they think your complaint is?

Er..

Dummies are typically sold in a blister pack, not loose.

You are recommended to sterilise them prior to use, from new. It says this on the pack.

Be honest, how many people are actually sterilising them before every use? Which is recommended.

Some bird poo on the outside of the packet, when you're meant to take it out of the packet and sterilise it first, is merely unpleasant and not actually a risk.

EdithBond · 09/05/2025 19:56

Of course you should get a refund for any items you buy that are soiled, as you have been.

You should also wash all new items before you wear them, as they can contain chemicals from manufacture and packaging, as well as germs from the manufacturing, storage or shipping process. Depending on the manufacturing/shipping chain, and how quickly items are individually wrapped, I’m sure all sorts of critters get into stuff: ants, cockroaches, rats, mice, birds etc.

But why would they refund other items that are in the same order if not soiled? Weren’t they (e.g. the bras) individually wrapped?

And while all animal and bird faeces obviously carries germs, it can be washed off with detergent. Pigeons and seagulls sometimes poo on people’s heads, if they’re unlucky (or lucky, according to superstition). No need to worry, even if it’s a baby. Just wash it off with an anti-bacterial wipe and/or warm, soapy water or shampoo.

Ive been to a clothing factory in China. I wash all new clothes, bedding, towels etc.

Ok yeah, good point. But toys that they might chew or something then.

Is it the chemicals or dirt that was the issue?

I often suspect we have more to worry about from chemicals in clothes than we realise.

midlifeattheoasis · 09/05/2025 20:01

This is brilliant 😂

Kid drop dummy on the pavement, mum picks it up and sucks the street muck off and shoves it back in baby's mouth. Seen that numerous times.

Why on earth are you @-ing all those companies in @Rendeak ???

They're not going to be alerted to your post! 😂

Also, as some posters have said, LOL at you posting and then not returning to the thread! I won't waste my time posting much. Just YABU to say you will go to the press. How ridiculous! 😆 As some posters have said, practice your Daily Mail sad face!

EggnogNoggin · 09/05/2025 20:04

And please don't go to the press because what goes online, stays online and one day your kids friends will know you're the Bird Shit Mum and the poor sod will be nicknamed Pigeon for life.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 09/05/2025 20:04

I voted YANBU by accident. You absolutely are being unreasonable.

EastGrinstead · 09/05/2025 20:05

Practice your best Daily Fail outrage face and gasp in horror as you discover — brace yourself — that we humans share this planet with animals and birds who... poo.

Funny how that always happens with AIBU threads. If it doesn’t go their way we never see the OP again.

I've never bought anything in Primark, yet, but by darting through our local one it cuts off a large corner.
I got halfway and felt like I was being gassed. It was all the dressing put into the clothes fabric to give it body. If you wash the chemicals out before wearing, you chance ending up with a limp rag.

dannyufcfan · 09/05/2025 20:13

You're being a tad dramatic, here.

Edited

Some parents at the school where I taught went to the local paper because the child kept getting head lice. The headline was Nit Girl. A cautionary tale.

LittleMG · 09/05/2025 20:16

My mum told me when I was a baby I ate bird poo.

Stravaig · 09/05/2025 20:19

Our feathered friends were here on earth long before us, and have been shitting on human heads for the entirety of our existence. However, if you don't want your baby to be anointed by a bird splat, you could always dress them in a hat.

Maybethisallthereis · 09/05/2025 20:21

I’d be pissed off but wow you’re being so dramatic!

Dagnabit · 09/05/2025 20:25

Where there’s a blame, there’s a claim! 🤣😂
