AIBU to go to the press after finding bird poo inside baby hat from George at Asda?

WARNING - George, Asda, baby clothes unsafe and dangerous!

I’m honestly still in shock and disgusted. I ordered a two pack of baby sun hats from George at Asda, and when I opened them, I found two separate bird poos inside one hat!!! Not just on the outside – inside the fabric where my baby’s head would go. And there was poo on the outside of both hats too.

It’s not just a hygiene issue, it’s a genuine health risk. Bird droppings can carry serious bacteria and diseases like salmonella, E. coli, and even psittacosis. The idea that this was meant to go on a baby’s head is horrifying.

Even worse – other items in the same parcel are now contaminated. This wasn’t a one-off mark. This was clear evidence that birds have been inside their stock or warehouse, and if it happened to my order, it could be happening to others. If they have birds, do they also have mice and rats?!

I contacted customer service expecting a serious response, but all I received was:

  • A refund for the hats
  • A £10 voucher

Not even a refund for the pack of bras that were in the same package. VILE. I was told to return them, but thinking about touching any of the items is making me sick!

That’s it. No escalation. No real investigation update. Just a generic apology.

This isn’t about money – it’s about safety. It’s absolutely unacceptable for a baby clothing supplier to be shipping out items in this condition. It makes me worry about how many other babies could be exposed if people don’t inspect and wash everything before using it.

PLEASE – if you’re buying baby clothes from George (or anywhere) – inspect and wash thoroughly before letting your baby wear them.

I’ve attached photos so you can see for yourself.
@GeorgeAtAsda @foodgov @WhichUK @UKGovcomms – this needs to be looked into properly.

Should I contact local media to raise awareness more widely? I feel this is being swept under the rug, and I’m truly shook, disgusted, and very concerned for other parents.

You may not be aware, OP, but George is actually a seagull.

It's the risk you take when you shop there.

Liz1tummypain · 09/05/2025 19:03

No. Move on. Shit happens.

gamerchick · 09/05/2025 19:05

You're going to do a mint compo face and end up in angry people in newspapers to get the piss ripped out of OP.

Birds and rodents get in warehouses. If it makes you feel better, the bird that shit in your hats was executed by a dude with a rifle.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 09/05/2025 19:05

This isn’t about money.

Yes it is.

Limehawkmoth · 09/05/2025 19:05

OP, the AIBU hit squad are out in force tonight. You aren’t being unreasonable to be concerned.
you aren’t going about getting resolution the right way though. Press isn’t the answer.
escalte within ASDA as I mention in my previous emails.
this isn’t some tin pot company that doesn’t have decent logistics, or is something form a developing country . They deal with food distribution, baby equipment, health products. It is a safety issues. Indicative that they’ve lost control of their supply chains.

Pursue that. Escalte within ASDA. But don’t drive for compensation. Ask for explanation.

but ignore the posters that say you’ve a washing machine, or being a princess. It is an EHS issues. Asda need to take it seriously

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 09/05/2025 19:07

I mean I would have just washed it.

PiggyPigalle · 09/05/2025 19:08

Take it the hats are burned now you've received a refund.

In future always wash before wearing, as stuff gets worn then returned and sold without being checked.
The hats definitely hadn't been to Brighton. Their seagulls are the size of turkeys, with poo to match.

user2848502016 · 09/05/2025 19:09

What a massive overreaction. Take them all back and get a refund, what more do you expect them to do?!

mustytrusty · 09/05/2025 19:09

Bloody hells bells

AliBaliBee1234 · 09/05/2025 19:09

Do you ever go outside? Cause birds can crap on you there also.

The £10 voucher could have been more but can't believe it's even entered your head to go to the press 😵‍💫

MrsPlantagenet · 09/05/2025 19:10

😂 The press? Get a grip.

viques · 09/05/2025 19:10

It’s all those birds flying free above us that you need to worry about OP, indiscriminatingly pooing on fields growing our food, playground climbing frames and swings, reservoirs, gardens, allotments, parks, benches, it’s a wonder we aren’t all dead.

HunnyPot · 09/05/2025 19:11

What do you think the press will want to do with your story?

PlayingDevilsAdvocateisinteresting · 09/05/2025 19:12

Hoppinggreen · 09/05/2025 17:59

Send the child back, ask for compensation and/or boil wash it

Please don't boil wash your children, under any circumstances - but sending them back for compensation sounds like an excellent idea 😂

ilovesooty · 09/05/2025 19:13

Limehawkmoth · 09/05/2025 18:55

Er, no.

i have worked in logistics. There is no way that rates or other vermin should be inside modern warehouses.
there are pest control measures. These are simply not expenses. Even for large warehouse.
warehouses are not old remshackly sheds - they are generally modern,
purpose built, secure and controlled spaces. Especially Asda.
this sort of practice is operated in warehouses for decades
life thisnis stored in same warehouse as other Asda distribution form food chain, the. They have manger issues breaching the food hygiene regulations.

OP, I’d be escalating this to the customer service complaint team asking for full investigation. Frankly they can test these deposits and determine where they were contamined in supply chain, in final distribution warehouse, or earlier in their supply chain. Bird poop , or whatever it is, is a biological hazard.

don’t go to press currently. Don’t make this about compensation at this point . Get them to identify where contamination occurred and how and why. What failed in their supply chain and inspection process. Once they e recognised they’ve got an issue, then discuss compensation.

addres a WRITTEN letter to CEO by tracked signed for delivery if needed. You can find name and address on company house register. Also put it on their social media sites with photos. They’ll respond to that far faster than press. This is a good start. Hopefully someone on here who works for them will escalate it (Asda employees out there?)

it isn’t acceptable for you. But it is also indicative that they’ve lost control of their supply chain.

Oh for goodness sake.

Over dramatic much

ChampagneLassie · 09/05/2025 19:14

I couldn’t get worked up over this, I’d have just washed the hats and used them.

goody2shooz · 09/05/2025 19:16

Just be thankful you’re not in Gaza then. You ‘couldn’t touch’ a hat with bird poo on it? Be thankful that’s your biggest problem.

TY78910 · 09/05/2025 19:16

I know nobody likes that misogynistic word / name on here, but if I was to explain to someone what it meant, it would be this.

Someone in the warehouse made a mistake by not checking something that’s likely been returned, the company had apologised and given you a gesture of goodwill as well as a refund. What is your expectation exactly?

Calmdownpeople · 09/05/2025 19:16

😂😂😂😂

Thank you OP I needed that laugh today.

This is maybe one of the most hilarious over reactions ever.

YoungSoak · 09/05/2025 19:17

Go one further OP and PHONE THE POLICE

CosyDenimShark · 09/05/2025 19:18

Christ alive, you'd have had a fit at the peacock that came in my shop shitting everywhere! 😂

LizzieVereker · 09/05/2025 19:18

It could have been worse, OP. Imagine if there had been a mole living in your Asda - it could have made a massive mountain on top of your baby’s hat.

Thisismetooaswell · 09/05/2025 19:19

If you were out and about with your baby, and a bird poo landed on the hat, what on earth would you do? Bin it?

PinkArt · 09/05/2025 19:21

I mean, obviously literal shit on clothes is gross, but isn't the potential for pests in warehouses why everyone washes new clothes before wearing them? I do it as an adult with sensitive skin, so presumably parents of babies do it too.
OP, it was gross, you've complained, they've refunded, apologised and given a goodwill gesture. I'm not sure what more you are expecting from them.
