AIBU to go to the press after finding bird poo inside baby hat from George at Asda?

WARNING - George, Asda, baby clothes unsafe and dangerous!

I’m honestly still in shock and disgusted. I ordered a two pack of baby sun hats from George at Asda, and when I opened them, I found two separate bird poos inside one hat!!! Not just on the outside – inside the fabric where my baby’s head would go. And there was poo on the outside of both hats too.

It’s not just a hygiene issue, it’s a genuine health risk. Bird droppings can carry serious bacteria and diseases like salmonella, E. coli, and even psittacosis. The idea that this was meant to go on a baby’s head is horrifying.

Even worse – other items in the same parcel are now contaminated. This wasn’t a one-off mark. This was clear evidence that birds have been inside their stock or warehouse, and if it happened to my order, it could be happening to others. If they have birds, do they also have mice and rats?!

I contacted customer service expecting a serious response, but all I received was:

  • A refund for the hats
  • A £10 voucher

Not even a refund for the pack of bras that were in the same package. VILE. I was told to return them, but thinking about touching any of the items is making me sick!

That’s it. No escalation. No real investigation update. Just a generic apology.

This isn’t about money – it’s about safety. It’s absolutely unacceptable for a baby clothing supplier to be shipping out items in this condition. It makes me worry about how many other babies could be exposed if people don’t inspect and wash everything before using it.

PLEASE – if you’re buying baby clothes from George (or anywhere) – inspect and wash thoroughly before letting your baby wear them.

I’ve attached photos so you can see for yourself.
@GeorgeAtAsda @foodgov @WhichUK @UKGovcomms – this needs to be looked into properly.

Should I contact local media to raise awareness more widely? I feel this is being swept under the rug, and I’m truly shook, disgusted, and very concerned for other parents.

Lol

Madisnttheword · 09/05/2025 19:24

You were lucky it was only bird poo and not your favourite animal, the high horse

Waitingforspring77 · 09/05/2025 19:24

This has to be a wind up, surely.
You are aware that there are much bigger issues and problems going on in the world right now and you're worried about a turd in a hat. Bung it in the wash, it will be grand. Pop a bit of disinfectant in with it to chill you out a bit!
Jesus!

CorbyTrouserPress · 09/05/2025 19:27

I live by the sea. You would spontaneously combust if you saw the amount of seagull shit that lands pretty much everywhere here.

Doris86 · 09/05/2025 19:35

What a drama Queen. Shit happens! No
one has died, and they have offered you a refund and £10 voucher. Get on with your life and worry about things that are worth worrying about.

SchrodingersTwat2 · 09/05/2025 19:36

What a bloody fuss.

Serencwtch · 09/05/2025 19:37

Wait until you find out the conditions in the factories where it was produced.

If it was in the food for your tea then absolutely be outraged or they were refusing a refund or exchange then make a fuss .

They've not only refunded the item but they've gone above & beyond & given a voucher too.

By all means go to the papers. The red tops live this sort of thing but it's you they'll be laughing at

SchrodingersTwat2 · 09/05/2025 19:38

My oldest's school field backed onto a river. Getting spattered with seagull shit was common. It washes off.

You know jam and sauce factories have a limit to the number of insect parts they are allowed to have in each batch? And that limit isn't zero.

Concretejungle1 · 09/05/2025 19:38

just wash
the items or dump them. What is the issue? They’ve already rectified this. Are you not aware that there are mice and birds etc in the stores and warehouses?
companies have peat controllers come out regularly to monitor.

this

Very profound.

We humans have such arrogance.

MrsMitford3 · 09/05/2025 19:39

I will not read the article in the paper unless it says how much OP's house is worth by the sad face picture

TravellersLip · 09/05/2025 19:39

That’s an unpleasant thing to find but I think this needs firmly filing under “Shit Happens”.

We share the world with birds and other animals. They do poos. Occasionally things like this happen.

That said, I’m sure some tabloid with column inches to fill with clickbait might bosh you a small sum for your dignity and a sad face photograph.

RentalWoesNotFun · 09/05/2025 17:55

That’s why we wash our newly bought clothes prior to wearing them.

Not only does it take out starch etc which may have been sprayed on but it also removes bacteria and dirt.

Birds have even crapped on my underwear and sheets when they’ve been drying on the washing line. I just wash again. I don’t throw them out or burn them or something.

I wonder if you’ve got some kind of phobia or something. Your feelings seem quite extreme.

This has happened to my washing more than once. Also my car. I wrote to the RSPB and requested they put little nappies on them. Regrettably, this has NOT happened! Have cancelled my direct debit and contacted the king (patron). Also my MP.

Duckyfondant · 09/05/2025 19:44

I get it, OP. I contacted my local Tesco a few years ago because I kept finding long human hairs in their bakery cookies. Kept getting £10 vouchers but I really just wanted someone to go tell the minging bakery staff member to wear a sodding hairnet, so I could enjoy my cookies in peace.

xanthomelana · 09/05/2025 19:45

Limehawkmoth · 09/05/2025 18:55

Er, no.

i have worked in logistics. There is no way that rates or other vermin should be inside modern warehouses.
there are pest control measures. These are simply not expenses. Even for large warehouse.
warehouses are not old remshackly sheds - they are generally modern,
purpose built, secure and controlled spaces. Especially Asda.
this sort of practice is operated in warehouses for decades
life thisnis stored in same warehouse as other Asda distribution form food chain, the. They have manger issues breaching the food hygiene regulations.

OP, I’d be escalating this to the customer service complaint team asking for full investigation. Frankly they can test these deposits and determine where they were contamined in supply chain, in final distribution warehouse, or earlier in their supply chain. Bird poop , or whatever it is, is a biological hazard.

don’t go to press currently. Don’t make this about compensation at this point . Get them to identify where contamination occurred and how and why. What failed in their supply chain and inspection process. Once they e recognised they’ve got an issue, then discuss compensation.

addres a WRITTEN letter to CEO by tracked signed for delivery if needed. You can find name and address on company house register. Also put it on their social media sites with photos. They’ll respond to that far faster than press. This is a good start. Hopefully someone on here who works for them will escalate it (Asda employees out there?)

it isn’t acceptable for you. But it is also indicative that they’ve lost control of their supply chain.

I work in a warehouse. Sometimes when we have the shutter doors open for delivery birds, rats etc have the audacity to come in.

Clothing wouldn’t come from the same DC as clothes, same way our chilled and frozen comes from one place and our ambient from another part of the country.

Obviously she’s escalated it because they gave her £10. Why would they give anymore compensation?

It’s also not indicative that they’ve lost control of their supply chain, this is why supermarkets employ companies such as Rentokil to keep pests at bay. How they are supposed to keep a bird from flying in I don’t know because shutters have to be open to get deliveries in.

IWasTheLemonHelper · 09/05/2025 19:46

Of course they have rats and mice. I had some tins of tuna the other day from Tesco and the card thing that held them together was a bit chewed. It was tins so and they were fine so I didn’t complain.

I wouldn’t like bird poo on baby clothes but I’d accept the voucher and throw them away, you’re being too dramatic about this. The poor bird, probably died in that warehouse.

Yes, and what her DH does for a living.

Calliopespa · 09/05/2025 19:46

EilishMcCandlish · 09/05/2025 17:53

You should be washing baby clothes before your baby wears them regardless of where they come from. This just proves why.
All warehouses get birds in them sometimes.

I mean this kindly, but once your baby is mobile, a bit of dried bird poo in a sunhat is about the least of your concerns. They will be actively stuffing any old shit in their mouths.

This is what I was going to say op.

You need a sense of proportionality When children are playing outside etc. They will come across mucky stuff.

Obviously they shouldn’t have been sold like that but the idea that you can’t pick up the bras up to post is ridiculous.

Butchyrestingface · 09/05/2025 19:48

Fancy that. OP didn't return to her thread.

Except it to be gone for outting reasons any time soon.

EggnogNoggin · 09/05/2025 19:50

Ong I'm so embarrassed about how crazy you're being. This isn't an emergency requiring national media coverage.

A store made a mistake.
They compensated you.
The will fix then problem.

On an entirely seperate note, there is no way someone as bonkers as you would have put unwashed clothes on your baby. Plenty of laundry gets shit on by birds. You rewash it.

Phelicity · 09/05/2025 19:51

Why on earth would you go to the press? Just complain to the company.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 09/05/2025 19:51

Overthebow · 09/05/2025 17:49

This really isn’t a huge issue. They’ve refunded.

This

wtf are you expecting?

what would you do if a bird shat on your washing? Throw it all away?

Surferosa · 09/05/2025 19:51

I love that the OP is wanting the UK government comms team to be looking at this. As if they'd be trawling mumsnet looking for things to be concerned about!

EggnogNoggin · 09/05/2025 19:51

And by helpfully tagging those businesses, they can already see that the vast majority of the public aren't bothered and its not going to be of interest to the press.

Butchyrestingface · 09/05/2025 19:52

Phelicity · 09/05/2025 19:51

Why on earth would you go to the press? Just complain to the company.

She did. They didn't offer her the mega millions she thinks she deserves.
