AIBU to go to the press after finding bird poo inside baby hat from George at Asda?

WARNING - George, Asda, baby clothes unsafe and dangerous!

I’m honestly still in shock and disgusted. I ordered a two pack of baby sun hats from George at Asda, and when I opened them, I found two separate bird poos inside one hat!!! Not just on the outside – inside the fabric where my baby’s head would go. And there was poo on the outside of both hats too.

It’s not just a hygiene issue, it’s a genuine health risk. Bird droppings can carry serious bacteria and diseases like salmonella, E. coli, and even psittacosis. The idea that this was meant to go on a baby’s head is horrifying.

Even worse – other items in the same parcel are now contaminated. This wasn’t a one-off mark. This was clear evidence that birds have been inside their stock or warehouse, and if it happened to my order, it could be happening to others. If they have birds, do they also have mice and rats?!

I contacted customer service expecting a serious response, but all I received was:

  • A refund for the hats
  • A £10 voucher

Not even a refund for the pack of bras that were in the same package. VILE. I was told to return them, but thinking about touching any of the items is making me sick!

That’s it. No escalation. No real investigation update. Just a generic apology.

This isn’t about money – it’s about safety. It’s absolutely unacceptable for a baby clothing supplier to be shipping out items in this condition. It makes me worry about how many other babies could be exposed if people don’t inspect and wash everything before using it.

PLEASE – if you’re buying baby clothes from George (or anywhere) – inspect and wash thoroughly before letting your baby wear them.

I’ve attached photos so you can see for yourself.
@GeorgeAtAsda @foodgov @WhichUK @UKGovcomms – this needs to be looked into properly.

Should I contact local media to raise awareness more widely? I feel this is being swept under the rug, and I’m truly shook, disgusted, and very concerned for other parents.

Get your compo face ready for your photo shoot.

WinterMorn · 09/05/2025 17:53

God, I was cringing reading this BLATANT grab for ‘compensation’.

EilishMcCandlish · 09/05/2025 17:53

You should be washing baby clothes before your baby wears them regardless of where they come from. This just proves why.
All warehouses get birds in them sometimes.

I mean this kindly, but once your baby is mobile, a bit of dried bird poo in a sunhat is about the least of your concerns. They will be actively stuffing any old shit in their mouths.

ExtraOnions · 09/05/2025 17:53

What do you think Which Magazine are going to to?? Recommend them a Net to catch them with ?

Arms folded, angry face at the ready.

And the baby, looking relieved at having been Snatched from the Jaws of Certain Death.

PriOn1 · 09/05/2025 17:53

I think I’d probably just wash it. It’s impossible from on single case to say whether this is a widespread problem or whether it’s a one off and you were just very unlucky.

If there are no foodstuffs in the warehouse it probably won’t attract other pests, but many places employ pest control, especially if there’s any damage to products occurring.

So I would probably have contacted them to let them know, but I wouldn’t be considering any other action.

Intheshower · 09/05/2025 17:53

By any chance OP can you feed a family of 8 on £16.10 a week?

ExpressCheckout · 09/05/2025 17:53

Ha ha OP, an excellent fun Friday afternoon post! 😂

UpJacksArseAndRoundTheCorner · 09/05/2025 17:53

Just bung them in the washing machine and for goodness sake DO dial down the drama.

LoveTKO · 09/05/2025 17:54

You sound a very difficult person OP. Accept the refund and voucher and here’s an imaginary grip to hold. You’re making life difficult for yourself and employees. No need.

Simplynotsimple · 09/05/2025 17:54

AuntyAgony · 09/05/2025 17:49

Go to the press 😂😂😂

Bet the op will say ‘they didn’t actually mean that’ whilst secretly hoping the Daily Mail/mirror and whatever other paper who cba with real journalism will pick up the thread…

smallglassbottle · 09/05/2025 17:54

Look at this seagull going into this shop to steal crisps. Do you think he washed his beak and little feet before entering? No! He wanders around covered in all manner of pathogens, sharing the streets with humankind. He doesn't use the toilet or wipe afterwards either!

@GeorgeAtAsda @foodgov @WhichUK @UKGovcomms – this needs to be looked into properly.

I have to say ^^ this did give me a belly laugh!

RentalWoesNotFun · 09/05/2025 17:55

That’s why we wash our newly bought clothes prior to wearing them.

Not only does it take out starch etc which may have been sprayed on but it also removes bacteria and dirt.

Birds have even crapped on my underwear and sheets when they’ve been drying on the washing line. I just wash again. I don’t throw them out or burn them or something.

I wonder if you’ve got some kind of phobia or something. Your feelings seem quite extreme.

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 09/05/2025 17:56

Look on the bright side, it could have been human poo!

Hoppinggreen · 09/05/2025 17:56

AuntyAgony · 09/05/2025 17:49

Go to the press 😂😂😂

If "The Press" are even interested they will make you look like a loon by getting you to do a stupid sadface while holding the hat.
Wash it and keep it or give it to charity and then get on with your life.

Simplynotsimple · 09/05/2025 17:56

Cherry8809 · 09/05/2025 17:48

Arms folded, angry face at the ready.

Shame the squatting and pointing ala ‘done a poo’ position wouldn’t be applicable here. I’ll look out for the op on the APILN facebook page though…

Moier · 09/05/2025 17:57

Take a break magazine or That's life...
Don't forget the glum face and crying baby for the photos .
Also find a dead bird if you can too and put a catapult next to it.

nyancatdays · 09/05/2025 17:57

If they have refunded it and given you an extra voucher as goodwill, I think that’s fine. It’s well known that clothes stored in warehouses (and shipped from overseas) aren’t always clean, and that retailers and distributors don’t have sterile shipping containers and storage facilities! That’s why I always wash things before wearing - some clothes are even sprayed with insecticides during shipping. Every so often there is a thread on MN in AIBU about washing clothes before wearing.

I would expect to be refunded if I bought something damaged like the bird poo hat, but I wouldn’t be especially surprised, as I don’t expect clothes to be sterile in the first place, especially when sourced in bulk by budget retailers who are importing from overseas. I also wouldn’t be that outraged to go to the press!

To take your mind off it, OP, you might want to take a look at how many insect fragments are considered allowable in foodstuffs under food safety regulations. (Hint: it’s not zero!)

CKN · 09/05/2025 17:58

This has to be a piss take - first time posting to ask about going to the papers
🤔🤔

whatsappdoc · 09/05/2025 17:59

Radishgate and now this! Such a brilliant Friday on Mumsnet!

Lavender14 · 09/05/2025 17:59

Yabu op. Have you never seen the inside of a warehouse?!

I normally wash ds clothes before he wears them anyway but in thus instance I think a refund and a credit would have been a satisfactory response in my mind.

LadyWiddiothethird · 09/05/2025 17:59

😂😂😂

Marmite27 · 09/05/2025 17:59

That surprises me, every time I order from Asda each individual item arrives wreathed in plastic.

Hoppinggreen · 09/05/2025 17:59

Costacoffeeplease · 09/05/2025 17:49

What would you do if a pigeon or seagull poo landed on you or your child?

Send the child back, ask for compensation and/or boil wash it
