What careers are future proof?

I am thinking of retraining and wondering what careers do you think are future proof? I think the trades are e.g. plumber, electrician etc - any other thoughts? Thank you.

Have you been chosen by God though? 🤣

I've been an electrician for 25 years, as yet I still don't use a computer for anything business related, and not sure how AI could replace what I do work wise, in fact the more modern technology appears the more the electrical requirements and therefore the more work.

I think instead what we need to focus on is ensuring everything is pooled so we can be paid a universal basic income without needing to work. We aren't our job titles. We'll become the operators without needing the knowledge or qualifications so we can move from job to job as things change and be the ones who help physically as assistants to AI but we won't need the training. So maybe an MP or lobbyist would be the best thing for a career change, fighting for UBI and for AI leading to less work and a better quality of life for everyone, not some people get rich off AI while the rest are made redundant and left unable to earn a living.

Financial advice - there’s going to be a lot of money inherited and the average age of current advisers is late 50’s. It can be a very lucrative career too.

I work in charity fundraising, in a niche area. I'd be the last one out of the door and I earn more than everyone else - plus I love it

I would love to get into this! Any tips, please. Thank you

Elderly care.

We are living in an ageing society but sadly most are not ageing in good health, often have no family nearby and need extra help either with home help or personal care. I know quite a few private carers and they are rushed off their feet and turning away new customers.

AI is a fucking disaster for humanity.

But it's here and not going anywhere. 🤷🏼‍♀️

But why is it here? Why is humanity creating something so fundamentally harmful to it?

What about if the AI robot nurse knew every single birth complication possible, what if it could instantly scan for 1,000s of possible birthing problems within seconds. What if it could communicate to mums in 100s of languages. What if it’s work wasn’t affected by an argument with its partner, having a bad day, discrimination or laziness. I wouldn’t rule it out.

Edited

Then that should be an addition to a midwife and doctor (more like a robot consultant). No one is going to want a robot down there getting their baby out.

Heating and ventilation.

If she can pass the exam getting a 100% pass mark then she can earn a lot of money has a gas engineer.

Have you ever watched Wall-E with your children. All the people are fat sitting in chairs being waited on hand and foot by robots. That's how we are going to end up.

’Tech’ - broad term for understanding technology and how it will continue to evolve

Think about those car mechanics mentioned above, yes their job will exist but its a VERY different job in the future as very few car engines will exist, just batteries and computers

Tech is fine if your happy to retrain every two years or you progress to project manager. As a programmer you do get cheesed off become a subject expect just in time for it to become yesterday's news. Unless your a Unix wizz or like me you do database coding too. I do wonder when AI will get rid of us all. Work is offshored or nearshored so ideally you need clearance to work on stuff that can't be offshored

Money! As an almost qualified nurse in my 40s I wish I hadn't bothered. Apprenticeship route with a guaranteed job at the end. Not anymore!

Teaching, nursing, anything medical.

Am not convinced about that given today's announcements

Optimist2020 · 09/05/2025 17:22

@9hdtvey54r social workers. Unfortunately, there will always be children and adults being abused. Not sure if AI would be able to pick this up, it needs a human touch.

Where I work, they are getting rid of the minute takers as AI software can write your minutes for you, much better than any human can.
