What careers are future proof?

I am thinking of retraining and wondering what careers do you think are future proof? I think the trades are e.g. plumber, electrician etc - any other thoughts? Thank you.

Yoga teachers, make up for stage hairdressers.

Chelseaflag · 09/05/2025 13:08

Also a nurse possibly facing redundancy. I wouldn’t choose nursing as future proof.

ThatCyanCat · 09/05/2025 13:12

What the fuck, how are nurses being made redundant in a nursing shortage? Where's the money going?

Finance is ripe for AI.
There will be a need for oversight, but the general calcs etc... can definitely be done by AI - meaning less people to do the same amount of work.

Edited

That is true, AI can do the transactional stuff but humans will need to interpret it and help advise the business. There will be fewer lower level jobs but finance professionals will still be needed.

’Tech’ - broad term for understanding technology and how it will continue to evolve

Think about those car mechanics mentioned above, yes their job will exist but its a VERY different job in the future as very few car engines will exist, just batteries and computers

Sadly this is already the case , my db was a mechanic, and whole atm there are still cars with 'proper' engines for the most of the time while he was a mot tester he plugged the car into a computer to run the diagnostics

Obviously there are still things that need fixing most of the time it's a case of replacing xyz rather than repairing it.

Those saying finance and medical, a lot is being replaced by AI

Yes.. but I’d imagine no one wants an AI robot midwife delivering their baby.

NHS cuts: Diabetes care, talking therapies and rehab at risk - BBC News

Some info on NHS cuts here

Englishsummerblues · 09/05/2025 13:16

@Richtea67we already have AI in social work, it can do a care act assessment or some sort of risk assessment in the future. Social workers will probably be unqualified as the AI will in theory do everything for us. But it is very biased. Think about who does the programming, white middle class men. Do we trust them?

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 09/05/2025 13:19

@Pippa12i am just coming along to say this.
NHS trusts are under financial pressure they are closing wards etc and ‘redeploying’ people….if they can’t find a place in 12 weeks you don’t have a job!
student nurses are struggling to get jobs also as there is a recruitment freeze!
i qualified 15 years ago! It’s a worry!

Snapncrackle · 09/05/2025 13:21

Barber / hairdresser

always gonna have hair cuts 😂

MoistVonL · 09/05/2025 13:21

Dog walkers.
Hairdressers.
Childminders.

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 09/05/2025 13:21

We are short staffed and run ragged, there is a nursing shortage! Sometimes we have more student nurses than staff in shift! It’s the financial pressure on NHS.
However there’s no talk of the big managers getting ‘redeployed’

Accounting is one of the careers fequently mentioned as being swept away by AI.
Hands on jobs will be safest. Even jobs in finance are vulnerable.

Lovingthehamsterwheel · 09/05/2025 13:30

No office work is safe, but it will take a lomg time for AI to take over everything.
I would say trades is a safe bet, boiler engineers, roofers, gardener, cleaning company, dog walker anything where it is unlikely to be automated.
I also think project managers will be relatively safe for a while. As someone needs to lead the projects even if ai does a lot of the leg work.

@Pippa12 what's the reason? I assumed we needed more nurses

Wondering the same

MerlinsBeard1 · 09/05/2025 13:36

Anything involving death and taxes.

Nope , look at how many people cut their own hair during covid.

madaboutpurple · 09/05/2025 13:38

Hair stylists. AI cannot cut people's hair .Lockdown proved they are needed.

Think you’ll find there is….and remember that a huge proportion of us ‘managers’ are clinicians by background. 20-30k jobs are to go across ICBs and NHSE in the next 2 years. Frontline staff are facing redundancy because Trusts are on the brink of bankruptcy, and the ‘corporate’ parts of Trusts (the bit where patient safety and safeguarding so often sit) are being slashed.

Don’t buy into the ‘get rid of the managers’ hype! And I say that as both a nurse of many years and a manager.

I work in charity fundraising, in a niche area. I'd be the last one out of the door and I earn more than everyone else - plus I love it
