Sick of vile, rude teenagers

DD was learning about VE Day at school and got wine a few of her friends would be going down to the war memorial this afternoon for the remembrance event. She asked if we could go so I said I would walk her there for 20 minutes so she could quietly see what was going on before bedtime (it’s just round the corner).

We arrived but there was a group of about 8 teenagers sat in the middle of the square making an absolute scene of themselves. Shouting obscenities, vaping, running around, showing off to each other and rolling about on the floor. After 10 minutes of this, having seen the exasperation on the faces of some very elderly people who clearly felt too vulnerable to call them out, I went over and told them to stop embarrassing themselves and to go if they were just there to make a scene. Of course they carried on (although a few seemed to back down). They actually looked shocked like they’d never been told off in their lives. They probably hadn’t.

I’m just so sick of it. These types are everywhere. They’re absolute losers who will likely do nothing with their lives and cost us all a fortune. I know it’s not PC to say it but it’s true - I feel like these types are everywhere, bullying people who are unlikely to respond while leeching off the state.

I absolutely accept teenagers act out and fully expect that (in a secretive and limited way), but this was just so disrespectful and it was so disheartening to see yet another event ruined by yobbos.

I expect I’ll be told IABU.

Yes and costing us all a fortune

Benefits
Police
Court system
Social services
Endless interventions and placements for their feral, unhealthy kids
All the while they terrorise the community and make it a depressing place to be

I work in crime and see this time, and time, and time again. It’s a very well worn path and all the interventions in the world only very rarely make a difference. It’s really disheartening

Wow

I was with you in your op, until you started punching down and making comments about benefits

Awful teens are everywhere, and exist in all social classes 😄 - rich teens are just as unpleasant and entitled - i dread all teens as I'm not at my ideal body weight and I know they're probably making fun. Teens can be obnoxious and have terrible taste in music. But that's as far as my opinion goes really

I, an adult, wouldn't refer to a kid who may or may not have a parent on benefits, a loser. It's not in me

You work in crime - you are terrifying. You're someone who's supposed to be protecting the community but you look down on it?

Disgusting and unreasonable.

And so have a number of pps.

Someone always joins a running thread on here and heroically states "I'm going to go against the grain here and stand up for the downtrodden" <hands on hips, superhero stance>...and then says what numerous people have already said 🙄 😂

Indeed!

You try working in it and not coming to the same conclusion. Easy to be lofty and superior from a distance.

Agree with you. Well done for saying something. I came across some like this at the cinema a while ago. They were sat behind us in a half empty cinema and were making stupid noises and comments the whole through the film. I politely asked them to stop a couple of times and then finally threatened them with getting the manager, at which point they left. They were so rude and disrespectful and I can’t actually remember what happened in the film, it was stressing me out so much.
I also felt pretty vulnerable as a lone female in charge of 3 kids (2 mine plus one friend). But I had to say something to them - if only to show my kids that rudeness and disrespect shouldn’t be tolerated.

I grew up poor, I know it's not pleasant, and I know the behaviour you're talking about. It's childish and stupid

But I've also experience shit from other kids in different circumstances - far more unpleasant and mean spirited, but just not hanging out on a park bench

there's a difference with being pissed off at stupid kids, and saying that theyre losers who come from benefits and looking down at them, op

They were being unruly and disrespectful at a ve day celebration - that's kids, regardless of class!

I've edited as I had to reread the op to see what they'd actually done. Kids are annoying but these ones don't seem like losers.

Not getting the reference to leaching off the state. They were kids right?

No that isn’t ’just kids’. Screaming ‘you fucking cunts’ in front of what looked to be 90-100 year olds isn’t ’just kids’. It’s absolutely disgusting, bratty and offensive. Shame on you

Oh just my general despair at what will inevitably be their futures.

You do realise that the human brain doesn't fully mature until around 25?

Those kids may not have been behaving appropriately but there's a fair chance most of them will grow up and out of it and become reasonably decent adults.

They weren’t smoking on street corners or having a crafty drink in the park, they were screaming ‘YOU FUCKING CUNT’ to interrupt a large VA gathering. Amazed the distinction isn’t being made

Do you think they sound well brought up, though? My friends and I weren’t like this at their age. Sounds like they’ve been raised to think they don’t owe anyone basic respect.

ArtTheClown · 08/05/2025 20:32

And yet teens manage to behave in societies where there is discipline and consequence. That's how brain maturing happens.

I wish people would stop saying that though. It was one study that was badly and simplistically reported at the time. 25 isn't a magic number, it was just the age cut off point for the study subjects.

So am I, that’s disgusting behaviour. There are some like that round here, zero respect for others.

Shame on you. The kids you're supposed to protect might not be perfect but they don't deserve to be labelled losers and have you assume that they will end up on benefits.

Do better and if you hate the financial status of the community you serve so much, do something else

Smallmercies · 08/05/2025 20:35

I never see local teenagers being other than respectful and considerate. The last yob I saw was middle-aged.

I'm not disputing the behaviour you witnessed was disgusting (I hadn't seen the post specifying what they said), but to tar all (or a large number of) teenagers with the same brush and describe them as a 'lost cause' is pretty appalling imho.

Plenty of successful adults were rebellious teenagers - most of them grow out of it. There's no need to be so judgmental and pessimistic.

Where did I tar ‘all or a large number’? Can you quote?

Interesting that you bemoan the attitudes of teenagers and then say they’re “losers” who will do “nothing” with their lives.

You’re the adult here and to have that attitude is pathetic.

A teenager is perfectly able to understand when they need to behave themselves. When they don't,it's out of choice and to annoy adults. I don't have a problem with her saying that.

Me included. These weren’t that though. If most grow out of it then why do we have so many scummy adults?

Thank you. My 6 year old sits quietly for an hour in church once a week.

YABVU to frame this as a problem with working class teenagers. Because that's what you mean, isn't it? When you call them losers? You believe they are children from lower socio economic backgrounds whose parents may be on benefits. I can tell you from experience, parental 'respectability' isn't a barometer for the behaviour of teens. In my village the kids hanging around making a nuisance of themselves are from good homes, drunk on alcohol pinched from the wine rack, with parents who either naively believe they are studying at a friends, or who know, but are the types who waffle on about undeveloped brains to excuse their child ruling the roost and doing as they please. The working class kids are often being raised strictly by traditional means.

I’m working class (lorry driver dad). This is absolute rubbish. Pop into a local court room and then report back on the backgrounds.
