Sounds mad but it’s true, honest! If you have 3 kids…

Same dad, no miscarriages to ‘break the chain’, if the first 2 are opposite sex, the third will be whatever number 2 was - so BGG, or GBB. Not BGB, or GBG.

It sounds crazy but it’s something I noticed ages ago - every time somebody announces they’re having a third, and they have one of each, I know it will be the same as the second child.

Prove me wrong, Mumsnetters!

My siblings are BGB.

Relatives who have had 3 either have all 3 the same sex, or have the first and third child the same. Afraid your theory doesn’t actually apply to anyone I know!

Element4056 · 08/05/2025 09:16

Just thought I'd chime in with my own experiences:
I've had BGB
My mum had GBG
My aunt had BGB
My uncle has had BGB

Has been the opposite in my experience!

OnyourbarksGSG · 08/05/2025 09:21

Not true at all. I’ve got BGBG and my eldest has BBBB

IwasDueANameChange · 08/05/2025 09:25

My dad & siblings - BGB. Although it was quite some years ago so there could have been miscarriages, that sort of thing was not discussed

TipsyRaven247 · 08/05/2025 09:31

What a load of utter rubbish.
It took me literally two seconds to come up with an example that refutes your absurd theory.

I didn’t realise I could have ‘haters’ over something so dull, inoffensive and inconsequential (if a bit batshit) but that’s the internet for you I suppose..

I can’t think of anyone I know in real like that has BGB or GBG, aside from 2-dad situations or things like huge age gaps etc. just got me thinking! I think PP may be right that there are more combinations where 2 in a row - so that makes it look like it’s more common than it is.

It would not say "haters". But it is worrying that our society and education systems produce individuals like you who are completely devoid of any common sense and mathematical intuition. And you come here throwing messages like "prove me wrong Mumsnetters" like you are in some sort of higher intellectual pedestal, which obviously rubs people the wrong way because you are displaying traits of both arrogance and ignorance.
Even someone who has not had any formal exposure to the field of Probability should have the sense to realise that the events that you are describing are independent and therefore there is no connection between the genders of siblings.
Each child’s gender is determined independently at conception, with roughly a 50/50 chance (slightly skewed male in most populations). A quick Google search would have debunked you bonkers theory.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 08/05/2025 10:28

Some very strong reactions to the op. Dearie me.

A sample isn't something that can be statistically significant.

I think you know what I mean !!

I know many people with BGB and GBG.

How does your theory make sense? Gender is determined by the sperm, sperms carrying XX live longer but are slower swimmers. Sperm carrying XY for boy swim faster but die faster. So if you have sex a day or two before ovulation, it's more likely some XX girl sperm are still alive, waiting to penetrate egg. If you have sex on ovulation or a day or so after, it's likely the XY boy sperm will reach egg first.

Obviously some men make fewer XX or XY sperm, or one type is prone to deformities that limit ability to swim or survive for long. They say a man's diet can also affect whether he produces more XX or XY sperm, while the acidity levels of a woman's reproductive tract also affect it. Which explains why so many people end up with 5 boys or 5 girls!

I have heard a theory that if you have 2 the same gender, it's very unlikely a 3rd will be a different gender!

That's fascinating.

mamaoftwo93 · 08/05/2025 12:46

Yep, this is true for me. I’ve just had my third baby a couple of weeks ago - GBB

Good grief. I’m going to prescribe you a gin, a sit down in the sun and a sense of humour.

Icepop79 · 08/05/2025 14:10

Sorry, OP but I know 2 families that meet your criteria (same dad, no miscarriage, no fertility treatment).
They are BGB and GBG.
In fact I don’t actually know any GBB or BGG combinations (but do know a few GGG and BBB)

MrsBubblegum · 08/05/2025 17:41

Yeah, I have GBG

HolidayHell2025 · 08/05/2025 17:44

Not true. I have 2 older brothers and I am the 3rd a girl. And so is my cousins. So wrong 100%

Jumpers4goalposts · 08/05/2025 17:45

OP you could be on to something there I’ve just realised I don’t know anyone in real life with three DC’s where the first two aren’t the same sex

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 08/05/2025 17:45

I had bgbgbb

Putneydad7 · 08/05/2025 17:46

What moron would bother responding to a moronic post like this, oh doh !!!

Chickydoo · 08/05/2025 17:48

GBBB here

Chumbawomble · 08/05/2025 17:49

We've got BGB. But interested to know about stats.
