Sounds mad but it’s true, honest! If you have 3 kids…

Same dad, no miscarriages to ‘break the chain’, if the first 2 are opposite sex, the third will be whatever number 2 was - so BGG, or GBB. Not BGB, or GBG.

It sounds crazy but it’s something I noticed ages ago - every time somebody announces they’re having a third, and they have one of each, I know it will be the same as the second child.

Prove me wrong, Mumsnetters!

Yes, I know, but she’s explaining why my perception is that there are more of this combination even though there aren’t.

There seem to be a lot of posters irked by a very benign, harmless, silly thread.

That could be because you're saying something is true when it's just anecdata.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 08/05/2025 03:26

Sorry but my BFF had GBG. Sorry to burst your bubble. 🙂

It’s just something I’ve noticed - every time somebody with a boy and a girl announces they’re expecting number 3 I think ‘oh yeah that’ll be a boy/girl’ depending on what number 2 was, and sure enough I always seem to be right!

How would you or even the mum know about miscarriages to “break the chain”? Many happen too early to even notice.

I haven’t noticed it either. Not true for the three families I nannied for.

Waterweight · 08/05/2025 04:24

Not to rub it in but I was the third child & a girl (2 older brothers)

You need to look into probability 🫣

you have:
BBB, BBG, BGB, BGG, GBB, GBG, GGB, GGG as the full 8 options.

2 options are non-consecutive sexes
6 options have consecutive sexes

so obviously you are going to get a 25:75 split in favour of consecutive sexes. (This is in reference to quoted post)

BUT to your first post, it is a 50:50 chance of baby 2 and 3 being the same sex…obviously 🫣

Well, not necessarily 50% - there is some evidence of correlations between sex of siblings.

You’d not have been right with ours… GBG or going way back to myself and siblings….. BBG. Or my wife’s GBG.

flapjackfairy · 08/05/2025 06:00

I have BGG
But as one of four my mother had GBGB

BeCyanSloth · 08/05/2025 06:07

I have bbbbg all same dad
sil has bgbbbbb all same dad
mil bgbb all same dad
we are a very boy heavy family though

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 08/05/2025 06:12

GGGBB

GRex · 08/05/2025 06:24

Nonsense. I can think of at least 10 examples where the third child alternates again.

lobsterkiller · 08/05/2025 06:31

As the youngest of three, were GBG.

basilsmum1 · 08/05/2025 06:51

True for me GBB

Communitywebbing · 08/05/2025 07:07

Your sample is not statistically significant, OP!

Very literal aren’t you? Maybe get a life!

Haha OP - ignore the haters! I did enjoy this post and your theory is true of everyone I know except George,Charlotte and Louis who I am obviously very close too 😂😂 so think you are on to something!

(hmm Charles, Anne, Andrew also go against the grain 👑)

Well there's no mystical pattern - I expect people are irked because you're just talking nonsense in your opening post 😅

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 08/05/2025 07:54

BGBB here

RedFatball · 08/05/2025 08:06

I have GBG

FateReset · 08/05/2025 08:16

I know many people with BGB and GBG.

How does your theory make sense? Gender is determined by the sperm, sperms carrying XX live longer but are slower swimmers. Sperm carrying XY for boy swim faster but die faster. So if you have sex a day or two before ovulation, it's more likely some XX girl sperm are still alive, waiting to penetrate egg. If you have sex on ovulation or a day or so after, it's likely the XY boy sperm will reach egg first.

Obviously some men make fewer XX or XY sperm, or one type is prone to deformities that limit ability to swim or survive for long. They say a man's diet can also affect whether he produces more XX or XY sperm, while the acidity levels of a woman's reproductive tract also affect it. Which explains why so many people end up with 5 boys or 5 girls!

I have heard a theory that if you have 2 the same gender, it's very unlikely a 3rd will be a different gender!

A sample isn't something that can be statistically significant.

I didn’t realise I could have ‘haters’ over something so dull, inoffensive and inconsequential (if a bit batshit) but that’s the internet for you I suppose..

I can’t think of anyone I know in real like that has BGB or GBG, aside from 2-dad situations or things like huge age gaps etc. just got me thinking! I think PP may be right that there are more combinations where 2 in a row - so that makes it look like it’s more common than it is.

I have gbb
friend has ggb
friend has bbg
friend has bbgb
so yay!

wehavea2319 · 08/05/2025 09:06

I’ve heard that a few times but seems it isn’t true- even if you have 2 of the same sex it’s still near 50/50 chance what the next one will be http://www.ingender.com/gender-info/odds-of-having-another-boy-or-girl.aspx

anecdotally most of the three children families I know are BBG

Sharptonguedwoman · 08/05/2025 09:11

No idea re miscarriages as certainly none of my business but friend's grandchildren BBG. My rellies from my generation BBBB, BBBG.
