Time to get rid of the pope?

I'm not Catholic so I don't know much about this. Could the world survive without the Pope? There's no need for a head of the Catholic church. There's no Anglican equivalent. Keep the bishop of Rome job, but leave it at that.

Expecting to get totally pasted here and I accept that I know nothing and happy to have explanations.

Why? It’s up to the people who follow a religion what they do with that religion. The pope lacks any real world wide power. He has waning influence outside of religious circles. It’s not like back in the day where the pope was on par with an emperor.

I'm not Catholic, in fact am descended from German people who were part of Martin Luther's reformation, so I come from a long line of people really not impressed with Catholicism. However, I could care less if Catholics want to waste their time, money and emotions on supporting a very rich old man in a very rich city. Their choice.

However, I'm sick to death of the over-the-top news coverage. Unless you're Catholic, who cares about the man? That I don't understand. Even though I'm an American who is not far from Chicago, it's 'meh' for me.

You didn't have to say you are an American:

        "I could care less"

With all due respect, doesn't even a small part of your brain think - "I'm saying the opposite of what I mean here"?

what we mean is "there are things i care less about than this thing [the pope] but not much." It's just how we speak and we understand it more like an idiom.

Yes, I get that. We have a very similar idiom in the UK that means exactly that - "I couldn't care less". What you're saying over the pond is that you could care less - which means you do actually care, and that isn't what you mean at all. It's so odd that none of you have ever figured that out.

Anyway, I'm just being pedantic for fun. Go in peace.

I think this happened a lot in the U.S. because of immigration- so many people with different languages moved here, especially in the 19th century, that new arrivals leaned English from non-English native speakers and repeat. Eventually a British English saying gets altered.

You need to be on Pedants' Corner.

The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church. You cannot get rid of the pope. I’m Catholic so trot on Henry.

I'd quite like to get rid of 'The Pope'. Those at the highest levels, even the Pope, the highest level turning a blind eye and covering up Paedophilia in it's clergy and rape of children is a pretty good reason to get rid of the Pope symbol that he holds. But then I have standards. Seems people bowing down to the Pope and that awful institution don't. Cover ups and more cover ups over the years. Disgusting abuse enabled by people who don't care enough to stop it because 'religion....'
