Time to get rid of the pope?

KatyKopykat · 06/05/2025 22:38

I'm not Catholic so I don't know much about this. Could the world survive without the Pope? There's no need for a head of the Catholic church. There's no Anglican equivalent. Keep the bishop of Rome job, but leave it at that.

Expecting to get totally pasted here and I accept that I know nothing and happy to have explanations.

Admins @mnhq please remove if this is not allowed.

I think they should appoint a woman this time

(PS.... yes I KNOW why they can't appoint a woman.....)

ShockedandStunnedRepeatedly · 07/05/2025 07:53

@TheNightingalesStarling we can dream….

I did wonder if it would be someone from a developing country this time…

(apologies if that is non-PC terminology)

DonaldJohnTrump · 07/05/2025 07:57

I could do it easy, as well as my job here in the USA

Just needs some MAGA letters on that bigly hat he wore.

spoonbillstretford · 07/05/2025 07:57

Well yeah, probably about 1000 years ago, but you've got the full might of the Catholic Church and millions of roman catholics across the world against you.

I wouldn't start from here if I were you. 🙂

ThejoyofNC · 07/05/2025 07:44

I don't know why people are trying to argue with such ignorance.

What else should I be doing on my daily commute?

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 07/05/2025 08:10

😂👏

RareGoalsVerge · 07/05/2025 08:21

Cool.
What other multinational organisations don't really need someone in charge?

The UN - doesn't really need a Secretary General.
Big charities like The Wellcome Trust, World Health Organisation and Unicef disbursing millions of pounds a year - no real need for a CEO.

Great idea.

CiaoMeow · 07/05/2025 08:28

I think you don't understand the huge significance and pivotal relevance of the Pope to the Catholic Church and faith.

The papal office can be literally traced right back right from the 1st century and Apostle Peter, making it the oldest living institution in the world. Catholics believe that Jesus chose Peter to be the head of the Apostles, making Peter the first Pope and 'the rock' upon which the Catholic Church was built. Every Pope is considered a successor of Peter.

Viviennemary · 07/05/2025 08:28

No. It's a good idea. The Pope is the leader of the Catholic church. And by tradition is the successor of Peter. Whether Peter would agree who knows.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 07/05/2025 08:30

I love the pope!

Createausername1970 · 07/05/2025 08:30

Most organisations tend to have someone at the top.

Netamount · 07/05/2025 08:33

I think they should bring back the Avignon Popes. It’s been years since we’ve had a decent schism.

Mercurial123 · 07/05/2025 08:33

Every cult needs a leader (I'm an ex Catholic).

OhLucinda · 07/05/2025 08:34

What would not having a pope accomplish?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/05/2025 08:37

The astonishing levels of ignorance and utterly absurd notions I've seen touted on some recent opening posts here really makes me question if universal suffrage is such a good idea.

There's been three black Popes. A lot of Popes have been from poorer countries, which at the time, the conditions were very poor. It is a way to escape poverty and for Nuns, the threat of a bad marriage/maternity death.

No we can't do away with the Pope, he's the head if the Catholic Church. I don't like the history or some of the policies, but the last Pope had good points to add to the discussion around accepting refugees and bringing the end to wars. Both the last two Popes have talked about the mortal sin those in power conveniently forget, ignoring those in need and suffering that can be alleviated.

1dayatatime · 07/05/2025 08:43

@SpanThatWorld

"Topseyt123
The Archbishop of Canterbury is the head of the Anglican church. Worldwide.

The Pope is head of the Roman Catholic church, also worldwide.

Both positions are currently vacant."

"Could the Chief Rabbi stand in?"

Exactly- why does the Pope always have to be Catholic!!

Seems to be very discriminatory against other candidates for the job.

SpanThatWorld · 07/05/2025 08:43

BoundaryGirl3939 · 07/05/2025 08:30

I love the pope!

All of them?

Even Alexander VI?

KatyKopykat · 07/05/2025 08:47

All right everyone I'll hold my hands up, it's a nutso suggestion.

I'm not Catholic so I don't know much about this.

You don't need to be Catholic. Teaching this sort of European history isn't fashionable among the trendy liberals who think it's not relevant to multicultural Britain. But it's necessary to understand how we got here. And how the Catholic church at one time owned 50% of Germany (as it is now) and 44% of France. It's all written down in books - just not the ones you find in schools.

swimsong · 07/05/2025 08:55

1dayatatime · 07/05/2025 00:13

@BassesAreBest

"Surely that’s a matter for people who are Catholic to decide?"

But why should just those that are Catholic get to decide on whether there is a Pope or not.

Isn't that discriminatory to other religions?

I have no idea if this is a serious post or not. If it isn't 😅 If it is 🤣

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/05/2025 08:55

Wtf has it got to do with you who the head of the catholic church is? Ridiculous post.

Galatine · 07/05/2025 09:08

KatyKopykat · 06/05/2025 22:46

Yes he was the first pope as I understand it.

No he wasn’t. (St) Augustine was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, and was sent by the pope to evangelise England. Augustine was of course Catholic as there wasn’t a lot of choice before the Reformation.
Just crack on commenting on subjects on which you have zero understanding or knowledge. It’s fun reading it

KoiTetra · 07/05/2025 09:11

Op, why is it you think getting rid of the Pope would be a good thing?

Almost every single organisation in the world from businesses, charities, military, governments, sports clubs to religions have a leader of some form. CEO, President, Chairman. Things work better when there is a leader to make ultimate decisions.
