Time to get rid of the pope?

I'm not Catholic so I don't know much about this. Could the world survive without the Pope? There's no need for a head of the Catholic church. There's no Anglican equivalent. Keep the bishop of Rome job, but leave it at that.

Expecting to get totally pasted here and I accept that I know nothing and happy to have explanations.

You don't need to be Catholic. Teaching this sort of European history isn't fashionable among the trendy liberals who think it's not relevant to multicultural Britain. But it's necessary to understand how we got here. And how the Catholic church at one time owned 50% of Germany (as it is now) and 44% of France. It's all written down in books - just not the ones you find in schools.

There are vast swathes of European history that isn't taught in schools. Nothing to do with trendy liberals or multiculturalism. More to do with what you can do in 2 x 50 mins a week.

PestoPasto · 07/05/2025 09:33

I was raised Catholic, now a staunch atheist. I would go as far to stay I detest Catholicism due to my experience growing up and even I have to disagree with you here OP! The Pope is very important to Catholics.

FriNightBlues · 07/05/2025 09:35

Congratulations on nailing the problem with democracy so succinctly. “I know nothing about this, but I’ve got an opinion!”

HeyThereDelila · 07/05/2025 09:47

YABU, ignorant and as you’re not a catholic by your own admission, it’s nothing to do with you. Maybe try minding your own business?

@SpanThatWorld

"Topseyt123
The Archbishop of Canterbury is the head of the Anglican church. Worldwide.

The Pope is head of the Roman Catholic church, also worldwide.

Both positions are currently vacant."

"Could the Chief Rabbi stand in?"

Exactly- why does the Pope always have to be Catholic!!

Seems to be very discriminatory against other candidates for the job.

I think this is genuinely the stupidest thing I have ever read….

There will never be a world that the Catholic Church has not ruined multiple
lives. Let’s not talk about the greed. Centuries of greed and child abuse.
Absolutely disgusted with all religion and the people who take it to another level.

Can I point out that OP has graciously admitted that they clearly raised a daft post.
No need to continue bashing her.

Apollo365 · 07/05/2025 09:58

You can’t tell a religion (you aren’t part of) to get rid of the head of their religion!???

Boredlass · 07/05/2025 10:01

We should get rid of religion, not just the pope

GasPanic · 07/05/2025 10:08

As far as I am aware the Pope is funded by the Catholic Church which is funded by the members of the Catholic Church. So it's up to them really if they want to "get rid" of the Pope and not really anyone else's business.

Imagine the outcry if this suggestion was made about the religious leaders of various other religions.

Enough said.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/05/2025 10:09

ReplacementBusService · 06/05/2025 22:48

The Pope sends Father Christmas an official naughty/nice list at the start of December every year. Without that function, Christmas could not happen and parents would have to buy their own presents for the good kids. Donald Trump has offered to do it anyway so no need to worry 👍

😹😹

Echhoingloudlyy · 07/05/2025 10:13

We should get rid of religion altogether!

My reasons:

It’s male dominated

Religion subjugates women

Men hide behind the cloth in order to abuse children

Most wars are caused by religion

1dayatatime · 07/05/2025 10:34

@swimsong

"I have no idea if this is a serious post or not. If it isn't 😅 If it is 🤣"

So I'm curious is the Pope Catholic then?

And whilst we are at it I'm also curious on where exactly do bears defecate?

AlrightTrouble · 07/05/2025 11:19

Who’d you reckon would do a better job? Trump? 😅

Pretty much the whole of AIBU too!

scalt · 07/05/2025 11:32

Most mumsnetters would get rid of religion if they had their way, with the vitriol towards it on this site. “Sky fairies.” “Indoctrination of my DC.” “Imaginary friend.” “Presented as fact.”

There's no need for a head of the Catholic church
Says someone who claims not to know much about it

Could the world survive without the Pope?
Is this a rhetorical question? Yo do know the whole world is not catholic, right?

There's no Anglican equivalent.
<ahem>

Keep the bishop of Rome job
So you know there is a Bishop of Rome. I thought you said you do not to know much about 'it' yet here you are delegating to the Bishop of Rome.

Expecting to get totally pasted here and I accept that I know nothing and happy to have explanations.
Happy to write a provocative post from a completely ignorant angle. Hmm

I'm sure they don't need your say so 😂

@KatyKopykat my conclusion is that you are proud to be ignorant but love the attention, a happy loudmouth and a bossy boot. I'd give you a very wide berth if I met you in RL as my pre-menopausal hormones couldn't deal with you.

And no I'm not catholic but, you know I went to school and read books, so am somewhat informed.

I recently saw a You tuber talking about Henry VIII - and how one thing he did with the money he got from the reformation and flogging of the English church lands off to generate cash was set up the Royal Navy.

I knew his kids the later monaches didn't have vast wealthy to play with and had heard the navy under Eliabeth I English navy wasn't in great shape - but never heard anything beyond sinking of Mary Rose and Henry VIII so assumed he'd just partied the money away.

I knew Samuel Pepys had a role in Navy reform after the Restoration though wasn't taught this come in in period dramas and then read books about him and time period.

The Navy how Britian got rich and became a major world power - and despite covering Tudor history in school this was never mentioned with Henry VIII it's all about his sex life/marraiges/succession and the problems caused with the reformation.

violetsorrengail · 07/05/2025 11:44

I think the world has got bigger fish to fry than ousting the Pope to be honest, I'd rather we concentrate our efforts elsewhere.

I actually think more wars now are caused by resources.

Wow.

You're not Catholic but feel qualified to say do away with the head of the Catholic church but keep bishop of Rome (two totally different posts) and then because you (incorrectly) state there's no Anglican equivalent, that's the rationale.

People never cease to amaze me.
