Be brutally honest - does this suit me?

Ok little backstory - I’ve lost around 27lbs in the last few months and I’m still on a long weight loss journey but starting to feel a little bit more confident.
My belly is my by far my biggest insecurity.
Been shopping for a new summer wardrobe and saw this dress - I think I’ve never worn a dress in my life due to my deep weight insecurities but this dress somehow spoke to me and I bought it!
But now I’m not sure - it fits great but I feel it draws attention to my big belly?! Should I keep it? I don’t know.
I know it should be only me and my opinion that matters and how I feel but please tell me does it really fit me? Is it flattering?
Thank you!

It’s an absolutely gorgeous dress and you’ll really have a lovely figure when you’re done, you look lovely already. I wouldn't stand at the bus stop holding your tum though lol. Enjoy wearing it when summer gets here!

GingerPaste · 06/05/2025 21:37

I think it looks good!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 06/05/2025 21:46

It looks nice OP, it’s a flattering dress. When you are standing normally it will skim over your tummy area, people aren’t going to be giving you the same intense consideration you are giving yourself in your second photo.

You are very brave posting such a question on AIBU by the way! As I say, I think the dress suits you and is flattering, but if you want some advice as you lose further weight, I would look towards the ‘style & beauty’ board rather than AIBU.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/05/2025 21:50

The neckline is too narrow imo, which will make you look larger than you are. You’d be better off with a shirt dress with a belt, cinched in at the waist, seeing as you have a waist (well done on the weight loss). Open the neckline to the bust. Or a wrap dress. Both will even out your hips.

Viviennemary · 06/05/2025 21:52

I think it looks fine. It doesn't look too tight at all,

Gwenhwyfar · 06/05/2025 21:54

I can't tell without seeing you in other clothes.

At first sight it's a nice dress that looks good on you (in photo 1 obviously).

Enthusiasticcarrotgrower · 06/05/2025 22:15

You’re slouching in the first picture and nothing would work with the second picture it’s deliberately unflattering.

Toptotoe · 06/05/2025 22:19

I think it looks great. Well done on your weight loss.

LadyAddle · 06/05/2025 22:23

I think it looks a nice light dress for summer, and that pattern is good - it breaks up the lines of solid shape that might emphasise any bulges you're self-conscious about. Enjoy feeling cool!

TheHerboriste · 06/05/2025 22:44

It's hard to say without a side view. Cute dress.

Can you buy some shapewear that will firm your belly up and hold it in a bit?

Fit & flare dresses are good for hiding belly fat.

Lighteningstrikes · 06/05/2025 22:58

It looks lovely.

LegoTherapy · 06/05/2025 23:24

I like it. Where’s it from?

Langdale3 · 06/05/2025 23:35

It looks nice on you 😊

Hellohelga · 06/05/2025 23:44

I like it. Nice and summery. It tucks in under the boobs but is loose on the tummy so a flattering shape for you. It’ll incentivise you to keep on with the weight loss too.

Helloworlditsmeagain · 07/05/2025 00:15

The dress is fine what will you wear on your feet? The outfit is not complete without the footwear and I can not give an honest opinion without seeing footwear. What you wear on your feet could make the outfit or not.

HollyBerri · 07/05/2025 01:48

It looks lovely on you. That dress is my sort of style so a yes from me.

Maddy70 · 07/05/2025 03:07

I really like it. It accentuates your good bits. The way you are standing isn't flattering but I can see it. It's a shape that suits you

PrimevalStomp · 07/05/2025 07:57

It’s an ok dress for relaxing in your garden but the material looks cheap so it wouldn’t be something I’d choose for times when you want to look elegant or impressive.

But buying dresses takes practice. These three dresses would probably be more flattering on you - weightier material, better proportions, more presence:

https://aligne.co/collections/dresses/products/paisley-denim-midi-dress-blue

You could obviously wear the two with zipped fronts with the zips lowered to create a v neck if that suited you better.

Those are lovely dresses and I will store them away for future reference, but judging in what the Op has pictured I think she is looking at the high street or supermarket price point. I am too as am still on my weightloss journey but live these. Thanks for introducing a new brand to me

MamaLenny · 07/05/2025 10:02

Well done on your weight loss so far, I see no reason why you shouldn't wear dresses.
Second picture does draw attention to your tummy but that's because of the way you're holding yourself. The first picture is absolutely fine.

UpMyself · 07/05/2025 10:08

@PrimevalStomp ,nice dresses. Probably a bit pricey for someone mid-way through a weight-loss journey.

Tu at Sainsbury's is great for nice dresses on a budget.

I like this one:

I think a longer sleeve and bigger print would look more flattering, but if it's comfortable then keep it for home?

When I wear dresses I usually wear a stretchy corset type thing underneath for shape, support and comfort, if you go for one with built in bra and steel bones it stops it rolling down/up (and saves any worry over bra straps/uplift). I'm a size 10 but feel a bit exposed in flimsy fabric without supportive underwear.

Or go for a more fitted style, in heavy cotton that drapes?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/05/2025 11:25

I don’t think it’s you that’s the problem, it’s the dress!

There are lots of nicer dresses that will suit you better.

Whilst the empire line is tempting when your weight is in the middle, I think this dress actually accentuates it. Maybe go for something that creates more of a waist, even if it’s an optical illusion.

The sleeves are awful - very childish looking - you need a longer, even if still short, sleeve. They cut you off at a really unflattering point on the arm. And the frill on the sleeve does you no favours.

I also think the small “ditsy” print is unflattering - go for either a bolder print or plain material.

I also think (and I can’t see your face but from your skin colour) that black is unlikely to be the most flattering colour for you.

Your figure is fine it’s the dress!
