Be brutally honest - does this suit me?

Ok little backstory - I’ve lost around 27lbs in the last few months and I’m still on a long weight loss journey but starting to feel a little bit more confident.
My belly is my by far my biggest insecurity.
Been shopping for a new summer wardrobe and saw this dress - I think I’ve never worn a dress in my life due to my deep weight insecurities but this dress somehow spoke to me and I bought it!
But now I’m not sure - it fits great but I feel it draws attention to my big belly?! Should I keep it? I don’t know.
I know it should be only me and my opinion that matters and how I feel but please tell me does it really fit me? Is it flattering?
Thank you!

I like the left hand photo. The other one is pure self-sabotage grabbing into your belly like that (stop it! Be kind to yourself!)

I like the dress and the style. As you're still losing weight gradually, just think, it will be even nicer than it is now in a few months' time.

MiniCoopers · 06/05/2025 20:12

No I’m afraid not: the pattern is too busy and that bust line only works for milk maids from a very long time ago. Look for solid colours with v necklines

BoredZelda · 06/05/2025 20:16

It looks lovely. If you feel good in it, that’s all that matters.

pizzaHeart · 06/05/2025 20:17

Wow! Congratulations on your weight loss.
Im not sure about this dress being flattering in principle. I myself look really round in dresses with this neck and sleeves plus I tend to slouching so my tummy becomes very obvious.
Also the whole view depends a lot on the length for me - midi makes me look like a sack of potatoes. (respect to farmers it’s just not the look I’m aiming for when out of the house)

Pomegranatecarnage · 06/05/2025 20:21

I like it. If you feel conscious a pair of anti-chafing shorts (they’re like tights but come up to just above your knees) are really comfy and hold you in a bit.

TheHateIsNotGood · 06/05/2025 20:24

OMG I can't believe the amount of bitches that lurk around here just waiting to shoot someone down in the name of 'being helpful'.

You really like the dress and it likes you too so wear it with confidence OP. If it helps I've seen plenty of people with so-called great 'bodies' wear clothes that look ridiculous on them purely because it's 'fash'.

Go out and conquer.....by the way I've got a great body, even still at 62, and usually swathe myself in unsightly rags. Because I want to.

mommatoone · 06/05/2025 20:49

Well done on the weight loss OP! Do you like it / feel nice in the dress? That's all that matters. My tummy is my insecurity, but I just throw the Spanx on and I'm good to go! Be confident In yourself x

WhiteWriting · 06/05/2025 20:53

Brutally honest was asked for - so no need for insults when posters give a subjective view. OP the material and print and style are dated and cheap-looking drawing attention to boobs and stomach. A stiffer fabric and shirt collar in a muted plain colour eg coral/khaki/navy will immediately look more flattering/chic/expensive. Many make the mistake of tight body con when a straighter silhouette that skims the body actually makes you look smaller. HTH and congrats on your impressive loss! x

Dagnabit · 06/05/2025 20:56

I’m not keen on it but can’t tell if it flatters you or not from those photos. We need a natural front pose and side pose really. Probably best to avoid grabbing any parts you aren’t happy with 😆

CiaoMeow · 06/05/2025 20:58

I think it would be perfectly fine if it was a size bigger. It looks too small across the shoulders and bust so getting a bigger size should solve that and would automatically give more room around the mid area. Try it and, actually, I would try 2 sizes bigger, just to see how that looks.

I know it's psychological with sizes but these days they vary so much in clothes it's about how it feels and looks not the number on the label.

With the dark colour, I didn’t really notice your belly in the first pic at all

westartfires · 06/05/2025 21:10

It suits you well enough OP! If you feel self conscious I agree with pps some Spanx underneath will pull things in a bit. Having said that, I think a more structured shirt style dress with a belt, or a wrap dress would look better on you. But that might be partly my own preference. I often feel like I’m wearing a nightie in dresses like that with not much shape or structure.

Woah.Hang on. Please dont call other women bitches. Nobody has been offensive on here so no need to start that crap.

handsdownthebest · 06/05/2025 21:13

Don’t like the dress. Frumpy kind of thing. Whatever your shape there is a lot nicer out there.
well done on loosing weight.

TheHateIsNotGood · 06/05/2025 21:20

@Sidebeforeself . It's just a regular word often used to describe 'bitchy' behaviour which can come in many forms and I often also ascribe it to some men before you go up that road.

IMO some posters have been 'bitchy' so rein in yourself before you try and censor me for using a common, descriptive word.

Aria999 · 06/05/2025 21:20

It's not terrible but I don't love it. Congrats on the weight loss! I also have more belly than I would like and I try to go for things that cling to the slimmer area between belly and boobs, and then either flare out over the stomach or are quite strong and a little stretchy so they hold it in without being uncomfortable or creating overhang (wide band stretchy yoga pants for example).

DonnaSueWeloveyou · 06/05/2025 21:21

It’s pretty

Weak excuse.

GroovyChick87 · 06/05/2025 21:26

It's nice. It's not the most stunningly beautiful dress I've ever seen in my life but it's ok as a casual day to day style for summer. I don't think it draws attention to your tummy. If you're worried about it you could wear a pair of control underwear underneath to smooth you out.

MrsPlantagenet · 06/05/2025 21:29

It looks ok when you are not cradling your belly.

mummysmagicmedicine · 06/05/2025 21:29

It looks lovely but I think you could suit a bit more colour! Esp for summer xxx

Catsandcannedbeans · 06/05/2025 21:32

I think it looks nice. Boobs look great, also looks pretty comfortable, that’s the most important things. Don’t both with spanks or any of that shit tho, it’s never worth the discomfort or sweat. ❤️

TheHateIsNotGood · 06/05/2025 21:33

No worries @Sidebeforeself as it's not an excuse as I have nothing to excuse. I'm not going to argue the toss with you as frankly my dear I don't give a toss.

Studyunder · 06/05/2025 21:33

Newstartplease24 · 06/05/2025 18:34

Well done on the weight loss. If you want something comfortable and easy to wear, and are self conscious about the tummy, the pattern and the looseness will detract from the tummy and I think you will find this very easy to wear and useful in hot days especially. This is not a killer dress but not all dresses have to be killer dresses. I think you should keep it, enjoy wearing it, get used to dresses and keep an eye out for different styles and get used to shoes / accessorizing for dresses

I agree with this.
Part of the issue is you’re not used to seeing yourself in a dress. I think it looks lovely for everyday wear. This is all part of the process and a great step forward. You’re trying something different, and it’s a good idea. You’re a different age as well as shape, plus fashion and the practical requirements of clothing also change over the years. Mixing things up helps you decide what works best for you overall.
Try not to overanalyse.
I hope you’re feeling proud of yourself 👏

MidnightMeltdown · 06/05/2025 21:35

It’s not a great dress if I’m completely honest. It’s not your belly that’s the problem, it’s the way that the line sits across your bust which is unflattering. It’s a little girl dress, not a grown up woman dress.
