To be annoyed at how bad our Eurovision song is?

AngeloMysterioso · 06/05/2025 15:11

We have any number of really talented songwriters, singers and musicians in the UK. And yet the best we could come up with is a few minutes of what I could only describe as sonic chaos with three girls yelling
what
the
hell
just
HAPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENED
over and over again.

It’s not even that it’s boring, or not fun or quirky enough. It’s actually annoying, and I find myself getting more and more irritated every time I hear it which thanks to Radio 2 playing it every hour or so is distressingly often.

How have we gone from the fab Sam Ryder to Olly Alexander cavorting in a dirty toilet and now this crap??

Was last year's winner a "terrible song sung by a novelty act"?

I think so? It was entirely unremarkable but I seem to recall some bloke in a coat made of pom-poms yodelling in a satellite dish.

Not as bad as Olly Alexander writhing in a grubby toilet, granted, but not good.

RaraRachael · 10/05/2025 16:47

When I was younv I could remember all the UK entries as well as the winners. Nowadays I can only remember our entries for being awful- can't think of our last vaguely decent one.
I think the worst ever winner was Toy by Netta which consisted of much clucking and other animal noises with no discernable tune.

ConnieHeart · 11/05/2025 08:31

Oh I love the Netta song! It's brilliantly bonkers!

Parts of the song are identical to Billy Joel’s My Life, I don’t know how they got away with that.

Yes I said that a few pages ago. And Don't Stop Me Now

TheAutumnCrow · 11/05/2025 22:35

Just saw this BBC article.

Remember Monday's What the Hell Just Happened was written at a songwriting camp, with multiple songwriters working together at a countryside retreat to write the perfect song for this year's UK act.

More like the product of a struggle session.

Remember Monday’s song was written by a bunch of people on glue.

I've heard the UK song on the radio several times, but yet to hear, in full, a single song that we will be able to vote for. I've heard snippets when they've done a eurovision segment but where's the songs. Do other countries also not allow the songs to be played beforehand?

You're allowed to hear them. UK stations just don't tend to play the entries from other countries ahead of the contest.

The best thing to do, is go to the official Eurovision YouTube account, and watch/listen to the 2025 playlist of entries there. m.youtube.com/EurovisionSongContest

EleanorReally · 12/05/2025 07:35

i like it

Puppypeewee · 12/05/2025 07:37

It’s a bit late this year? Isn’t it on earlier. Not heard out entry yet.

Troubledwords · 12/05/2025 07:38

Yes, I've heard them on YouTube, but why are the overplaying the one song we don't need to listen to as we can't vote for it!

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 12/05/2025 07:48

If UK stations played songs from the Eurovision playlist, the general public might have to admit that we don't always send songs that measure up to the competition. Maybe they're trying to avoid prompting that realisation?

Flossingisforteeth · 12/05/2025 07:51

It's just awful. And now we have huge numbers of school children singing/saying/writing the lyrics and trying to justify it ...

"So basically I like just got told I can't put skibbidy or toilet, or goat, bruh and now you're telling me I can't put "wtf" in my book when it's like the sigma of all songs, bruh. What the ....bruh" etc

Strangely enough, no you can't write any of that, it's your RE book, we're looking at the concept of Grace, and both SIAMS and OFSTED are due 😂

Our own song always gets lots of play. It's to rally everyone to watch the ESC.

RaraRachael · 12/05/2025 11:59

I think playing this year's UK effort will probably turn people off from watching on Saturday 😅.

I'm not surprised it was a collaborative effort as that's exactly what it sounds like - a mish mash of styles stuck together with no direction or substance.

It contains all of the right notes, tempos and melodies... just not necessarily in the right order Grin

Can you imagine Eric and Les Dawson playing a duet at the piano?

I'd vote for the AI of that.

EleanorReally · 12/05/2025 20:28

it is a mish mash, i heard it for the 3rd time today, i like it less, it is also quite short and repetitive
but it doesnt matter, the rest of europe need to like it, and us

the80sweregreat · 13/05/2025 09:36

I know that it might do well, but the ‘Milkshake man ‘ song is mega annoying ( Australia)
I heard it on radio 2 today , complete ear worm and probably be played at every hotel ‘ mini disco ‘ session from now on! Lol

NewGoldFox · 13/05/2025 09:45

I’m expecting the on stage performance to make it a fuller experience. I think it’s quite catchy and with good staging could do ok.

the80sweregreat · 13/05/2025 09:50

So many songs just repeat the same old lines.
Or maybe I’m just getting old ! 😂

Oganesson118 · 13/05/2025 09:53

Mae Muller and Olly Alexander were bad enough but this badly written screech-fest is probably our worst entry of all time. Even Jemini and Dan Sampson weren't as embarrassing as this.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 13/05/2025 10:08

Can't we just recycle Gina G? Ooh Ahh Just a Little is made for Eurovision. IIRC it all took itself a bit too seriously in the mid 90s, so she was a bit too ahead of her time!

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 13/05/2025 10:09

I actually really liked the studio recording of Mae Muller's song - still have it on our car mixtape - but the live performance was really, really poor.

James Newman's song was OK, but that too sank in the performance on the night.

By stark contrast, as well as having a good, catchy song, Sam Ryder truly owned the stage and had so much energy, passion and charisma.

the80sweregreat · 13/05/2025 10:17

Gina G was robbed of a win !
