Dog poo!

DameDoggieDoo · 05/05/2025 23:05

Currently holidaying in beautiful south Devon on a rather affluent stretch of coast - there are a lot of dogs here too!

The number of bags of fresh / recent dog poo seemingly "abandoned" on stunning coastal footpaths is quite surprising to me. I I am not a dog owner myself, but do get that you might not want to carry a hot turd with you for miles - so AIBU to give dog owners the benefit of the doubt and imagine they have left the bag somewhere they can collect it on their return leg? My DP says I am.

If you are a dog owner who sometimes leaves bags of poo on or near the path, do you always go back for it? This isn't a goady post, I am genuinely interested to know what is going through your mind when you bag it but don't bin it? Do you intend to collect it later or do you imagine that a ranger will walk the path daily to collect litter? Or do you just think that it will eventually biodegrade in a tidy way if it's bagged and left away from the main footfall?

Yes, I sometimes leave it to save me carrying a bag of shit for miles, and always pick it up on the way back.

mondaytosunday · 06/05/2025 00:49

I carry it with me, but on one or two times I have left it to collect later (and I always have) but usually carry it.

HelenaWaiting · 06/05/2025 01:23

YABU because it is a goady post, and you saying it isn't doesn't change that.

CyberStrider · 06/05/2025 02:06

Leaving it to collect later is as much littering as leaving it forever. Why should everyone else have to look at bags of poo dotted about the place?

If you don't want to deal with carrying a bag of shit you should not have a dog.

This. I do not want to pick up dog shit, and therefore I do not have a dog.

hehehesorry · 06/05/2025 02:15

Some people pick it up because someone has seen their dog poo, then drop it later. I've seen a few people do it in the distance

So true, not a day goes by without a dog shit thread or any dog thread.

And before anyone says it because there's too many dogs.

Don’t be silly

Exactly. Leaving it for one’s own convenience is obnoxious. Carry the shit home.

They are going to take it home. They are going to pick it ip on the way back rather than taking it on the walk with them !

PawsAndTails · 06/05/2025 05:59

I carry it with me at all times, except for one or two local walks which it is unlikely anyone else will venture onto during the week, and then only if I'm doing the long route. In that case I can hide it behind a tree right at the entry of the walk and no-one would even know it's there. There has never been a time I haven't taken it home from behind the tree on the way back. No-one should leave poo or leave bags in visible places if temporarily put aside.

It isn’t ok. If I left crisp packets, coke cans or used nappies by the path, for everyone to see, would that be ok, even if I remembered to pick it up a few hours later? Of course it wouldn’t be! Why do people think leaving bags of shit around the countryside is remotely acceptable. Also, a large number of dog walkers seem to be afflicted with memory loss when it comes to returning to their bags.

I agree with @CyberStrider If you are not willing to carry a bag of shit, don’t get a dog.

pilates · 06/05/2025 06:59

I don’t think anyone will admit to leaving them deliberately. It is awful. I went to a beauty spot recently and there was a notice recommending stick and flick rather than poo bags.

BigDahliaFan · 06/05/2025 07:03

We do a particular there and back walk frequently and will sometimes leave the bag in order to pick up on way back. But we do pick up, I frequently end up picking up other dogs shit as some idiot hasn’t picked it up from the middle of the path, don’t have a dog if yo7 won’t pick up the poo.

ExtraOnions · 06/05/2025 07:07

I live near the countryside … it’s popular with dog walkers - loads of dog shit bags, often left hanging from trees, like festering Christmas Decorations.

If you don’t like carrying shit around, in a bag, don’t get a dog - it’s really simple.

People don't take them home though, that's the point. It's why you see so many everywhere.

My eldest dog is 9. I have never once left a bag of shit to come back for later. I carry it with me Every Single Time. Even when doing a 4 mile walk.
I don't understand people who go to the effort of picking it up, bagging it, and then just leaving it to fester in the back hung in a tree or on a fence or on the floor.

I 100% agree with this.

I don't know why people dont just carry the bag...put the wrapped bag in another bag if you find carrying the little tied poo bag awkward but dont just leave it for others to have to see, even if you do intend to go back for it.

I have a dog and carrying bags of poo until you find a bin is just part and parcel of having one

Wolfiefan · 06/05/2025 07:15

It’s grim. Too gross for you to carry but fine to leave for others as they walk along?
@bigknitblanket and others. You need a Dicky Bag. Carry it with you. Hands free and no smell.

But why don't you carry it? Genuinely, what is the reason you don't carry it?

I'm coming at this from having a dog who's poo is quite large. I don't love the poo picking (obviously) but carrying the poo bag isn't the worlds biggest hardship so I just don't see reasons why you dont just take it with you?

I'm not goady. I was out walking yesterday in the most heavenly scenery imaginable and came across three separate and recent dog poo bags on the side of the path. I simply couldn't believe anyone who appreciates this landscape enough to walk to walk in it, would leave any kind of litter intentionally and permanently - so came on to ask real life dog owners (something I am not). Personally I wouldn't want to carry a smelly turd for miles so understand why people leave them, but I would certainly would make sure I got it on my return and think I would hide it until I did. Glad to hear others do this.

It's certainly a disgusting habit, especially the bagged dog poo hanging from trees, it's so grim. 1 person leaves it and then others follow suit then no one picks it back up again.

There should also be more dog poo bins around as this problem is just getting worse, the streets are terrible these days.

confusedaboutetiquette · 06/05/2025 08:27

I'm afraid I'm a virtue signalling dog owner and will carry a full bag for miles to the nearest bin, just to let people know I'm one of the good guys!

Yes, just another goady post knowing the dog is the devil according to MN with the amount of dog bashing threads. The same posters will post the same dramatic comments 🥱 followed ..by well if there weren't so many problems with dogs, there wouldn't be so many threads. Double 🥱 🥱.

wordywitch · 06/05/2025 08:33

If people started doing this with shitty nappies there would be hell to pay but somehow dog owners try to justify it. It’s disgusting and disrespectful, end of.

10/10 for the dramatic scenery setting.
