Dog poo!

DameDoggieDoo · 05/05/2025 23:05

Currently holidaying in beautiful south Devon on a rather affluent stretch of coast - there are a lot of dogs here too!

The number of bags of fresh / recent dog poo seemingly "abandoned" on stunning coastal footpaths is quite surprising to me. I I am not a dog owner myself, but do get that you might not want to carry a hot turd with you for miles - so AIBU to give dog owners the benefit of the doubt and imagine they have left the bag somewhere they can collect it on their return leg? My DP says I am.

If you are a dog owner who sometimes leaves bags of poo on or near the path, do you always go back for it? This isn't a goady post, I am genuinely interested to know what is going through your mind when you bag it but don't bin it? Do you intend to collect it later or do you imagine that a ranger will walk the path daily to collect litter? Or do you just think that it will eventually biodegrade in a tidy way if it's bagged and left away from the main footfall?

I recently purchased a special bag from Kong for this very reason. You scoop the poop in a normal poo bag and then put it in the bag until you find a bin/get home. It was less than a tenner, so reasonably affordable for most.

@Balloonhearts just leave the crap for other kids to potentially touch or think they can ruin their environment. Teach them to pick it up and put it in a bag so everyone can enjoy nature. Can you imagine if someone in front of you was chucking crisp packets, nappies, drinks bottles on the floor. Because they didn’t want to carry it but they will get it on the way back. It’s disgusting.

More pearl clutching...except all those items wouldn't be bagged up.

blobby10 · 07/05/2025 09:13

I've left a bag to collect on the way back a couple of times but only when I was certain I would be coming back in less than an hour. Normally I do circular walks away from non dog owning walkers and don't retrace my steps so depending on where I am walking I pick up the poo using the bag like a glove, before chucking it in a hedge. The empty but used poo bag is tied up and put in a pocket somewhere to be disposed of later - much nicer than walking along with a full bag of poo Grin

PawsAndTails · 07/05/2025 09:18

Where I walk I could probably leave £1000 at the entrance and it would still be there when I get back, it's that deserted. So I have no problem with the poo bag hidden out of sight behind the tree in that location, as long as I do get it on the way out. I do think it's gross to leave them in populated areas even if hidden.

I don’t think you know what pearl clutching means…. it doesn’t mean finding shit disgusting, that’s kinda normal… for most of us, anyway.

Just take it with you, FGS. People who leave dog poo behind, even if bagged up, give all dog owners a bad name.

I also have one of those little bags for carrying bagged up poo. It’s a little more elegant than carrying a swinging bag of steamies around!

You throw your dog’s shit into hedges?!

If you want to carry the thing with you just to have a good name, crack on. I don't intend to carry it when I can pick it up on my way back, in the absence of poo bins. It's in a bag on the edge of a riverbank where few people walk. Other normal people do the same and yes, it IS pearl clutching.

Wolfiefan · 07/05/2025 12:32

It isn’t. It’s finding leaving bags of shit lying around disgusting.

No - it’s not what “normal” people do at all - it’s what lazy owners do who can’t be arsed doing a basic part of dog ownership.

It’s just disgusting. Nobody would be okay with parents taking their kids for a walk and leaving their shitty nappies to pick up later.

Maybe you've got something there, a possible compromise - dog owners can leave their bag of shit provided they attach £1000 in cash, a kind of deposit on the dog's deposit.

Gloriia · 07/05/2025 13:20

I'm with you op, it is disgusting and pathetic to leave bags to pick up later.

There are bins everywhere. As a dog owner I carry it to the nearest bin, even if it's a 30min walk away so what, the poo is in a bag not like we have to hold it directly in our hands.

Those who leave it to allegedly pick up later please stop, or get rid of your dog if you can't behave responsibly.

Just carry it! What do you do wirh keys, leads, phones etc leave those behind trees to pick up later or do you actually manage to carry some items?

Iammatrix · 07/05/2025 13:29

I have a dog bag. Bought from a dog supplies company online.

It is compartmentalised and has sections for treats, unused poo bags and used poo bags and any other accoutrements my dog might need.

I pick up, tie bag and put it into the dog bag until such time as I can dispose of it.

I live in a very rural area, most people do handle their dogs poo with care and consideration for others. Some just don’t!

A good name with whom? I’m generally dog walking alone. Interesting that you think that clearing up is deserving of a good name though! 🙂

Other normal people do the same…

Normal people do NOT leave bagged shit lying around, but anyway you said few people ever went where you dog walked, so how come there are now all these other “normal” people there, leaving bagged poo?

Sounds like the place is awash with abandoned dog shit!

NoBiscuitsLeftInMyTin · 07/05/2025 14:52

On a cold day there's nothing like a bag full of warm/hot turds to warm you up.

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 07/05/2025 14:58

I carry it until I find a bin,.doesn't matter how far it is. I pick up other people's bags of dog shit too. I ran out of bags the other morning, my dog left a hefty deposit, I went home, collected some more bags, returned to the scene of the crime and cleared up the evidence. Most dog owners are responsible.

It's a river 10 second walk from my home. A riverbank where the home owners walk their dogs. No other people use it which is one of the beauties of living rurally. That, and not having to endure dramatic townies.

You need a dicky bag attached to a dog walking belt or just clipped on to your normal bag.

Hmmmm....not quite dishing out the attitude with this poster are you?

SamphiretheTervosaur · 07/05/2025 16:56

I don't understand the leave it till later attitude

I carry full poo bags sometimes for over an hour. It's part and parcel of having a dog

She said the reason she didn't carry her poo was because she didn't have a free hand, so I offered solutions.

You freely admit you can't be arsed and think it's fine to just leave it dumped.

Caravaggiouch · 07/05/2025 17:15

Of course they’re not coming back for it.

Dumping it means leaving it with no intention of retaining ownership. You're not quite getting it are you. The poo still finds its way into my garbage. I'm not quite sure why I am still engaging with you as I don't have to justify actions of common sense to a dog with a particular bone.

Talltreesbythelake · 07/05/2025 17:42

The land you are leaving shit on is not your property. You are breaking local by-laws. Stop doing this. It is minging.
