Dog poo!

DameDoggieDoo · 05/05/2025 23:05

Currently holidaying in beautiful south Devon on a rather affluent stretch of coast - there are a lot of dogs here too!

The number of bags of fresh / recent dog poo seemingly "abandoned" on stunning coastal footpaths is quite surprising to me. I I am not a dog owner myself, but do get that you might not want to carry a hot turd with you for miles - so AIBU to give dog owners the benefit of the doubt and imagine they have left the bag somewhere they can collect it on their return leg? My DP says I am.

If you are a dog owner who sometimes leaves bags of poo on or near the path, do you always go back for it? This isn't a goady post, I am genuinely interested to know what is going through your mind when you bag it but don't bin it? Do you intend to collect it later or do you imagine that a ranger will walk the path daily to collect litter? Or do you just think that it will eventually biodegrade in a tidy way if it's bagged and left away from the main footfall?

If people started doing this with shitty nappies there would be hell to pay but somehow dog owners try to justify it. It’s disgusting and disrespectful, end of.

You will find plenty of those when bin strikes are on, believe me.

Ilovemyshed · 06/05/2025 09:35

Its not acceptable to leave them for any length of time, even with the best intentions of picking up on the way back. Just have a small bag especially to carry the poo bags in 🤷🏽‍♀️

Yes, I sometimes leave it to save me carrying a bag of shit for miles, and always pick it up on the way back.

Why do you think that’s acceptable?

It's perfectly acceptable when I'm on my daily walk, where there are no bins and I know I'm going to be collecting it on the way back. It's in the open air bagged up. It's not going to jump up and splatter you 🙄 we aren't about to carry bags about to suit you when we can put them out of the way. You can't win anyway because when you do carry them, the drama llamas cry about swinging bags.

Callie247 · 06/05/2025 09:45

The trouble with leaving it to collect later is it encourages other people to leave it there too who wont go back for it.

So by that logic, can I leave all my half eaten food lying around because I’m coming back for it?

Hoppinggreen · 06/05/2025 09:51

I have very occasionally hidden a bag of poo when on a circular walk and always collected it BUT DH prefers not to and have a special compartment in his rucksack where he sticks the double bagged poo

Ablondiebutagoody · 06/05/2025 10:02

Temporary littering is still littering. The bag of shit is still there for other people to see. Dog owners really are disgusting

If you want, but your analogy is ridiculous and you know it. Do you eat the same time on the same walk every day?

As long as you have a secure container so that wildlife isn't eating unsuitable food, and can stash it so no-one knows it's there, I wouldn't see a problem if you pick it up on the way back.

There's only really one place I do leave a dog poo bag temporarily, and that's a place no-one else is likely to be, and I still stash it so no-one would even know it's there. No bins so it goes straight into the bin in the back of my car till we're home. I couldn't leave it where people would be able to see it. No-one wants to see that.

If it’s okay for you to leave bags of dog shit lying around then why isn’t it okay for me to leave my stuff lying around?

Whether I eat at the same time everyday or not has nothing to do with whether it’s okay to litter 🙄

But your plastic poo bags aren’t secure containers are they? They can easily be ripped open and the contents eaten or spread about.

Yep and it gives all the decent owners who do pick up and carry their poo bags a bad name.

I walk dogs for a living, sometimes 14-16 of them a day - I still manage to pick up after them and carry all the poo bags until i can find a bin.

There’s no excuse for just dumping them.

Littledidsheknow · 06/05/2025 11:23

I have a big dog who does big shits and I always pick up and take it with me. Disgusting to leave bags lying around: looks horrible, spoils the scenery for everyone else and risks being forgotten and left there.
Even if you’re a “I always come back for it” poo leaver, this behaviour encourages others, who may not be so fastidious about returning, to also leave their bagged up poo behind.

The rest of your post I agree with.

There's nothing around the local area that would be interested and all four or five times I've actually done it in an area where there will be no other people, they've been just as I found them. If there was any risk of that not being the case, I wouldn't even consider doing it. Plenty of wild animal poo all over the place though.

sprigatito · 06/05/2025 12:14

This is the shitty side of human nature, I’m afraid (pun intended). People will avoid unpleasantness if they can get away with it, and poo is unpleasant. Of course every dog owner you actually speak to ALWAYS picks up, if they leave it they are definitely “coming back for it”…but as the evidence on the paths, trees and beaches shows, a lot of them are lying. Yes, it’s selfish, lazy and disgusting.

CompletelyFlopped · 06/05/2025 12:37

I absolutely hate these bags of dog pop that I see lying about all over where I walk my dogs! I'd rather they just left the poop because at least I could kick it into the shrubbery or it would get washed away but the rain

I had no idea why people would do this til I met a friend on a walk and we walked together. She put a bag of poop down and said 'ill pick it up on the way back'. Of course she forgot. So now I know why there's loads of poop bags everywhere!

Just carry it with you. It's gross leaving it to 'pick up later' especially as it seems people forget to!

Don’t be silly

They are not being silly. Everyone needs to take responsibility for their dog, including dog poo for however long they want to walk for. If you don’t want this responsibility don’t get a dog.
I walk because I enjoy the countryside. I do
not want to look at dog poo bags just because someone can’t be bothered to carry them.

It is not for you to judge whether other people will see it. Just take it with you

NamechangeJunebaby · 06/05/2025 13:06

YANBU. I take mine for walks and the poo goes in the bag, double wrapped if it’s a long walk. I’d not dream of leaving it lying around!

If you want to be petulant and leave litter lying around, just to score a point, crack on. I will pick up the poo bags about 20 minutes on my walk back home, from the top of the riverbank I live close to. Pearl clutchers certainly won't make me carry the full bag 20 minutes on my walk when I can collect it near home 🙄

I have no intention of leaving litter or poo bags.

At least you admit to being a litterbug, I guess. Gross.

Clychaugog · 06/05/2025 17:16

I never leave it. Have a dog bag with designated pocket that can carry up to the 6 shits our two shit machines can produce on one walk.
