Salt n Shake and remove the salt sachet.

Your poor kids

Oh they're so much nicer without the salt 😂

Changmeagainname2025 · 06/05/2025 18:16

Honestly?

Mine have sweets & chocolate several times a week. Crisps, whenever they fancy but their not really fussed about them & mcdonalds maybe once every 6 weeks.

I'm fairly relaxed around sweets & chocolate, mainly because everytime we go to the dentist the dentist always tells me how clean and healthy their teeth are. But..... mine spend 10 minutes brushing their teeth every morning and night 😅

freespirit333 · 06/05/2025 18:22

McDonald’s a few times a year, sometimes poorly timed in the holidays like twice in 3 weeks (because of an end of term treat, and then a grandparent might take them a couple of weeks later, or if it’s a last minute grab for dinner after travelling).

Chocolate they often have a small amount every day - one of those teeny kinder bueno bars, or a few squares of dark chocolate.

Crisps, a few times a week. Not every day as they have school dinners most days (it would always go in a packed lunch).

Sweets rare. Youngest doesn’t like them and we don’t buy them except for Halloween. So just at parties really.

They have loads of treats though. At this time of year, ice lollies (daily!) and grandparents pick them up from school a couple of times a week so there’s always a cookie or muffin here and there.

Both DC are slim and tall, and do loads of exercise. If they were overweight I would definitely rein it in, particularly the after school grandparent treats!

5128gap · 06/05/2025 18:23

My children had a sweet treat every day after dinner and McDonalds every Friday, and if we were busy maybe again in the week. They had crisps in their lunch box every day with a white bread cheese sandwich and a piece of fruit that usually came back untouched. They are now in their 20s and 30s and all extremely healthy, healthy BMI and sporty/very active. No dental issues. They were rarely ill as children and are rarely ill now. Would I do things differently now? Yes. Do I think its done any harm? No.

RaspberryBeretxx · 06/05/2025 18:49

13 yo DS - every day either sweets or chocolate esp at the moment with Easter eggs to get through. McDonald's - very rarely, maybe twice a year if he's there with friends. Crisps maybe once a week, he'd rather eat olives, salami etc if he wants something savoury.

4 yo DD - small amount of chocolate probably 3/4 times a week at the moment and McDonald's never (maybe twice in her life). Crisps once a week approx. Sweets only if her brother gives her one, possibly one per week!

Fifireee · 06/05/2025 18:52

Crisps rarely. Chocolate a few times a week or once a week. McDonalds (ick) once a month. They're older teenagers.
One of mine has nothing like this ever.

okydokethen · 06/05/2025 19:12

DC 13 and 11. Most days they have one of these, usually a pack of crisps, they seem to be given sweets and chocolate more than I can keep up with. they buy snacks out with their friends or at the school canteen.
We eat out a lot but rarely at macdonalds, only drive through on a late outing or when really hungry - once every couple of months.

Surroundedbyfools · 06/05/2025 19:13

Weekly, all of them.

PinkAndWhiteStripedCat · 06/05/2025 19:14

Mcdonalds 3-4 times per year if that

Sweets/Crisps/Chocolate a small amount everyday, they never ask for it as they know they're getting it anyway

AlrightTrouble · 06/05/2025 19:24

Chocolate & sweets, maybe twice a week. McDonald’s once a week (it’s an after school thing). Crisps hardly ever, really once in a blue moon. Cakes are DCs downfall. Probably once a day.

GreenWriter · 06/05/2025 19:25

I try to buy non-choc stuff for lunch box / snacks / cereal (eg yogurt bars instead) but probably every other week we get something with choc in, in the shopping, so then DD has it most days in some form.

However, she will always choose sweets over chocolate as a treat - weekends and school hols she def has more sweets than an ordinary week as I don’t buy them
in shopping.

Crisps she eats most days as I buy multipacks for lunch box / snacks and big bags for movies - but sometimes I swap them out for popcorn or rice cakes, again depends on what we get in the shopping really.

jjeoreo · 06/05/2025 19:26

Chocolate once or twice a week
Sweets a few times a month
Crisps once or twice a week
McDonalds every 3 months or so

Bboy1234 · 06/05/2025 19:29

Crisps daily (they have something like quavers or monster munch in packed lunch)

Sweets probably small amount every weekend

Chocolate rarely as they dont like it much

Roughly once a fortnight for maccies

mrsconradfisher · 06/05/2025 19:34

Mine are teenagers now.
Chocolate, every day.
Crisos every day.
Sweets, once or twice a week.

McDonalds probably once a month.

They have both grown up without things being restricted in any way. Both eat a very healthy diet, full of protein, carbs and fruit/vegetables but if they want a bar of chocolate and a bag of crisps every day then they can. It was the same when they were younger. They would have probably chosen fruit instead but I strongly believe that by not restricting things and referring to them as treats enables them to have a very healthy relationship with food.
DS2 plays sport to a very high level, trains and plays 5 times a week. He eats like a horse and burns it all off.

NamelessNinja · 06/05/2025 19:36

Chocolate or sweets maybe twice or three times a week. Crisps maybe twice a week. McDonald's rarely, probably once every two months.

MsNevermore · 06/05/2025 19:37

I’ll give them crisps with their lunch on weekends. On school days they have lunch at school which I’ve been quite impressed with so far.

McDonalds maybe once every couple of months - usually it’s only if we’re in a pinch time-wise and it’s something we can grab quickly on the way home. Not a regular occurrence.

Sweets, I let them have a couple of small sweets from a jar we have in the kitchen after their dinner most days. The jar usually has small, individual sweets in it like Rolos, m&m’s, Haribo etc

I cook from scratch most days and they eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. They only drink water. They are active kids. We are on top of dental hygiene and there’s no concerns about their weight…..so I’m really not concerned about the odd instance of junk food, and 2 or 3 Haribo after a balanced dinner isn’t going to kill them 🤷🏻‍♀️

GameOfJones · 06/05/2025 19:45

An 8 and a 5 year old here.

Chocolate - very rarely, I probably buy some every few months. They do have biscuits for a sweet snack though. Pudding after dinner is either fruit or a biscuit out of the tin (depending on how healthy their pudding at school was....or not.)

Crisps - once every couple of weeks maybe? They're not a regular item on the weekly shop because I would eat them all 🤣.

McDonald's - we usually take them each school holidays. So roughly every couple of months. It's seen as a treat rather than a regular place to go.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 06/05/2025 19:51

My son is in his teens now so not sure on age relevance but…

Chocolate - rarely, he’s not that into chocolate and on the rare occasion he has it he usually opts for dark.

Sweets - far too many, at least a packet or two every single day but he has a little job and pays for them himself (and my mum will often drop him in extras) so I can’t really do much about that, other than advise against it on health grounds but as a fellow sweet-toother (that eats too much chocolate) it’s a bit pot & kettle!

Crisps - not that often because I have stopped buying them regularly, this is because he acts like they’re going out of fashion when I do and will rinse through 18 bags in a matter of a few days and I rarely got a look in.

McDonalds - Not very often, he only eats it if I take us which is probably once every 2-3 months, usually if we’ve been somewhere and its an easy grab on the way home after a long / busy day / journey.

Whilst he does eat quite a lot of junk he’s also not a fussy eater and also eats loads of fruit and will eat most veg and drinks a lot of water. I try to cook decent evening meals from scratch as much as possible and he generally has a healthy breakfast so I recon it all kind of balances out!

alphabetcrayons · 06/05/2025 20:53

7 year old twins here!

chocolate - we don’t actually have chocolate in the house, and that’s more on me - I WFH and I can’t be trusted 🤣 but they’ll get something from the shop Friday after school and would have something maybe over the weekend. Rare though - only realising how rare in writing this down!

sweets - hardly ever. Party bags and Halloween! Again it just isn’t something we buy. Wouldn’t say they can’t have it either though; they picked some sweets at the cinema over half term.

crisps - often! Always have Pom Bears, Quavers, Skips in the house, such an easy quick snack or something to shove with a sandwich.

McDonalds - maybe once a month? Usually out and about. They’ll ask for ‘window chips’ 🤣

Nothing is off limits but I’d say treats are more out and about and infrequent and again, I try to eat quite healthy so it’s more what I’ll have in the house. They love snacking on veggies like cucumber and peppers so that’s what I tend to give them at home and then they can have a treat when we go out. We cannot walk past an ice cream van without getting one as a family 🤣 Everything in moderation!

littlepurplerose · 06/05/2025 20:56

McDonald's / Burger King etc - never had it

Chocojate - a little amount such as choc rice cake 3 x a week

Sweets- never unless at bday party or something

Crisps- only if at social/ party never at home

TURNYOURCAPSLOCKOFF · 06/05/2025 22:29

DD5

Chocolate 2 times week

sweets maybe once a week
crisps 1-2 small lacks a week, sometimes kess.

McDonald's - she only likes the ice cream and chips with sweet and sour sauce. So will choose between those... maybe once a month after swimming or something. She'll sometimes go again with her auntie.

Are you... My mum?! 🤣 I still have a white bread cheese sandwich and crisps most days, plus some chocolate every afternoon at work or evening at home (no health/weight/dental issues)

savuni27 · 06/05/2025 22:52

Crisps daily in their lunch boxes.
Chocolate or biscuit daily.
Takeaway once a week on the busiest after school activity night.

I used to restrict it but they were spending their pocket money on crap at the shop and eating more than if i allow it freely.

Hayley1256 · 06/05/2025 22:57

I don't hide anything. There is always a full snack draw (crisps, sweets, biscuits, crackers etc) and also a fruit and veg box in the fridge that I've prepped. DD9 often chooses fruit/veg but loves a bag if crisps after school (pringles if watching a movie)
