To be sick of the enduring athleisure trend?

Just that really! I’m so sick of seeing women in activewear leggings. And now that we’re having some better weather the shorts are out. I saw a woman today in a pair of butter yellow short, short, shorts which left nothing to the imagination. I’m sorry I don’t need to see every lump and bump on your behind and legs.

Go on.. tell me how miserable I am 🙄😂

I’m voting that YABU op on the grounds that it’s hard for women to find time to exercise nowadays, so if they have to multi-task and wear gym clothes to the supermarket for example, or when dropping off dc, that’s better than not exercising at all.

Ilovemyshed · 06/05/2025 15:42

I have a pair of the softest lightest leggings that feel like wearing nothing, so comfy.

If I was a size 6 with a perky ass I would sassily strut around outside. But I’m not. However, that is my choice. So long as bits are covered decently wear what the hell you like.

KarmenPQZ · 06/05/2025 16:11

@PomegranateVase
So many people just look far too casual all the time now that I can’t tell if they’re going to work, going to a restaurant, going to the gym, or going home to sit on their arse all day.
well where they are going is none of your business so I think it’s ok.

I find if I get up and put on leggings I will almost always without fail get to an exercise class. If I wear my smart office clothes I will sit at my computer all day. I know which is better for me!

andtheworldrollson · 06/05/2025 17:12

What is “too casual”

how does it affect you ?

Aliflowers · 06/05/2025 17:17

@AllTheChaos abysmally but at least I’m comfortable

Soukmyfalafel · 06/05/2025 17:23

What other people are wearing have nothing to do with you. You are just looking for an avenue to be a snob, which is quite an unattractive look ironically.

NewBinBag · 06/05/2025 12:17

Omg, I never made this connection but you're right.

I think I actually carry trauma from having to run round a field in royal blue gym knickers, my thighs covered in fresh, red stretch marks on display to all the boys (& other girls).

90's PE class fashion comeback.

Hah.

You'll never be able to unsee it now.

Ours were dark green.

I have started rewatching desperate housewives from 20 years ago. The characters gabby and Susan wear active wear a lot so although I know it’s more widespread now, it’s nothing new. It just shows more of us are taking care of our bodies and mental health through exercise nowadays.

I noticed quite a bit of activewear in tv shows and music videos in the 90s when I was a kid so definitely not new.

I’m often in a jumper and leggings because easy to slip on, I walk everywhere, I have a sen child who will dart off without warning and it’s harder to see the stains my toddler will cover me in before we even get out the door for the school run. When it’s warm I’m in dresses. I “dress up” when I’m away from the kids for 3+ hours.

It makes me happy that the sight of my fat arse in gym gear is making judgmental individuals like the OP suck their teeth in.

I will listen out for the gasps of horror and keep some smelling salts at the ready in case they pass out at the sight of a woman who gives not a tiny crap what other people think about what she's wearing.

Tracksuits have been around as regular wear for 40+ years.

30+ years ago DM was wearing pastel coloured Dash tracksuits during her middle-aged years.

Basically athleisure.

Oh this made me smile. I had a very fetching peach Dash outfit in the 80s. It was the outfit I reached for after working in heels and dresses all day.

These days I do rely on Sweaty Betty for a lot of my daywear - for the gym, dog walks, housework.

I am in my 60s and I just assume I am by now invisible, so I don’t give a fig what anyone thinks ( I am too much of a freckly ginger for shorts though)

ChopstickNovice · 06/05/2025 18:05

This doesn't bother me. Wear and let wear :)

TinyRebel · 06/05/2025 18:09

I’d love to pull this look off, but lipoedema puts pay to that.😢 I much prefer the studenty Urban Outfitters look - massive baggy joggers and a smallish top. My advanced age makes that a tricky one too!

shivbo2014 · 06/05/2025 18:13

I go to the gym most days ay lunchtime so I am usually in gym attire all day 🫣

sweetpickle2 · 06/05/2025 18:19

Are we really shaming other women for having 'lumps and bumps' in 2025? Grow up.

emmatherhino · 06/05/2025 18:21

I don't personally like them on me, but if someone does and wants to wear them, good for them.

ThirdCoffeeThisMorning · 06/05/2025 18:22

There was a discussion at one point on my professional group if it's acceptable to wear leggings/hoodies to client appointments. I exercise almost daily and tend to prefer informal style but thought this was a bit much!

Cherrysoup · 06/05/2025 18:26

What should people wear, then? I don’t possess any leggings, I’m more a puddle jeans kind of woman. I do sometimes wonder what a mid 50s (me) woman should wear, but frankly, I’m not ready to give up my nice wide jeans. My cousin whinged at me and said it’s a terrible choice for hill walking last time we were up a hill.

I saw a young lady, probably 18, cracking figure wearing a skintight jumpsuit. The colour almost matched her skin and left north to the imagination. Wish I’d looked like her at that age!

Bridestone · 05/05/2025 23:17

I can handle anything apart from grey marl tracksuit bottoms riding high on the white-socked male ankle.

Not a fan either of those flesh-coloured, tight all-in-ones favoured by teenage girls, but I’m more fascinated than disapproving. They look exactly like the flesh-toned body stockings worn by women in Victorian naughty photos.

Grey tracksuit bottoms denote just released crims, according to my police acquaintances. I admit, it puts me off wearing them!

Gyozas · 06/05/2025 18:44

I live in active wear. I look and feel amazing and I work out every single day. I will not apologise!

Seymourscat · 06/05/2025 18:46

There’s track pants, shorts and leggings. I wear a variety of these at times. What I think OP was referring to was the ‘leave nothing to the imagination’ leggings etc. This look is relatively recent.

Of course people can wear wtf they want, doesn’t mean it looks good though and doesn’t mean people won’t have an opinion.

I do find it curious that it is mainly women’s clothing that is designed to show every contour of their lower regions. Men don’t tend to wear super tight Lycra as fashion on the whole.

The move to ultra clingy micro shorts and leggings that do right up your bits, as fashion, is relatively new I think

Beetlebumz · 06/05/2025 18:50

Agree op it’s so unattractive seeing everyone’s bum and vulva just no. Especially when they wear flesh coloured skin tight stuff. It’s awful no matter what size their body is.

henlake7 · 06/05/2025 19:04

Cherrysoup · 06/05/2025 18:33

I have grey marl joggers and sweatshirt and I always feel like I'm wearing a prison outfit! (They are pretty much just daytime pajamas though so I don't care).
Leggings and sweatshirts are what I throw on to walk the dogs first thing in the morning.....then i get dressed in 'proper' clothes!😁

Really doesn't bother me seeing other people in their athleisure gear though. Wear whatever you want!

Freeasa · 06/05/2025 19:16

There was a bloke at parkrun the other day with white skintight shorts and it had been raining and they went totally see through. Not a good look.

Never heard of that brand. That’s a lot of links for it!
