To call knickers… knickers?!

Ridiculous conversation with my friend today. We were out in town shopping and I said I wanted to go into a particular shop to buy some knickers. She gave a little laugh and said ‘Knickers? Are we eight?’ And I was like ‘Huh?’

Apparently she thinks that knickers are what kids call their underwear, whereas adults need to call them other things. I have literally never heard this theory, and was like ‘Well what do you call yours?!’ She tells me that she just says ‘pants’ or ‘underwear’, but to me ‘pants’ are what blokes wear or what Americans call trousers, and ‘underwear’ isn’t specific enough cos there are bras etc which are also underwear. Knickers is a perfectly fine word! She then suggested ‘panties’ which we both agreed made us want to vomit.

i’m pretty sure I made her argument look ridiculous, not least because the shop itself called them knickers. But please tell me that I’ve not been mis-labelling my smalls for the last 25 years??

They’re knickers. Whatever age you are.

Cedrabbage · 05/05/2025 18:52

It's not that deep

MrsPlantagenet · 05/05/2025 18:53

😂 I really hate ‘knickers’ too and never say it. It’s so very mimsy.

RitaAndFrank · 05/05/2025 18:53

Knickers are fine. Just don’t call them panties 🤮

TheChosenTwo · 05/05/2025 18:54

I call them knickers and dh refers to my knickers as under crackers 😂
Pants is what I would call dhs boxers.

sweetpickle2 · 05/05/2025 18:55

I call them pants but yes knickers is also fine.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 05/05/2025 18:55

I’m not keen on the word knickers and do tend to use pants but I wouldn’t think anything weird for someone else referring to their underwear as knickers and definitely don’t see it as a child’s word, if anything it seems more like something an older person would say.

Daisy12Maisie · 05/05/2025 18:56

Pants are what men wear. If someone said pants I would assume a pair of boxer shorts. Knickers are what women wear. Age 3 or age 83 we will probably be wearing knickers.

The alternative would be to say I need to pack my underwear (for a trip) or I am going shopping to by some new underwear.

Good gracious.
I've got several pairs of knickers.
And I'm 68, and have always called them that.

NotEnoughRoom · 05/05/2025 18:58

“Panties” is such a cringe American term to my ears, only said by creepy men or Mills & Boom style novels!

I suspect my Nan’s generation would have thought talking about your knickers was very common, and if ABSOLUTELY necessary, may have referred to them as “unmentionables”, but knickers is pretty standard these days surely?

I do sometimes say “undies” instead of knickers, but no real reason why.

AlmostSummer25 · 05/05/2025 18:58

Depends who I'm talking to whether I say knickers, nix, or pants. BUT knickers is fine & definitely not just for children.

your friend is the weird one,,

JoyousEagle · 05/05/2025 18:59

I think that even if you don’t like the word knickers, viewing it as a child’s word is unusual. Why would children say knickers but adults say pants or underwear?

I call them knickers, and wouldn’t use pants or underwear for the same reasons you’ve given.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 05/05/2025 18:59

‘Knickers’ is very British.

totally agree!

sounds like something from Enid Blyton to me.

I’m Scottish, for what it’s worth, and i usually just say/hear pants.

DriveThroughZoo · 05/05/2025 19:00

DH calls mine ‘larges’ (as in not ‘smalls’ 😂), but generally knickers in this house.
Panties makes me feel really uncomfortable because pants are what children wear (as in put your pants and socks on) they don’t become knickers & boxers until older in our house.

StarTwirl · 05/05/2025 19:01

They’re knickers till the day we die

IsThePopeCatholic · 05/05/2025 19:03

Knickers or pants. Panties is cringe.

OoLaOoLa · 05/05/2025 19:03

How strange, me my step daughter and step daughters mum had this exact conversation the other day. I call them knickers they both say pants.

mamajong · 05/05/2025 19:06

I hate the word knickers but iabu and I know it, if other people say it I just cringe inside. Yanbu

wobblyweasel · 05/05/2025 19:07

Knickers or undies, generally either of those. Never panties though, that’s so cringy. My DGM (maysherestinpeace) sometimes referred to them as drawers

VeryQuaintIrene · 05/05/2025 19:08

Knickers all the way! A hill to die on.

Elroq · 05/05/2025 19:08

I wonder why so many people hate the word knickers! I’ve never had a problem with it.

Panties though, clearly, is the devil’s word. Every time I hear anyone say it I die inside. And if the person saying it is British (ie has no excuse, unlike the Americans who are brainwashed to use it by Fox News and the panty-industrial complex) then it’s ten times as bad.
