To call knickers… knickers?!

Ridiculous conversation with my friend today. We were out in town shopping and I said I wanted to go into a particular shop to buy some knickers. She gave a little laugh and said ‘Knickers? Are we eight?’ And I was like ‘Huh?’

Apparently she thinks that knickers are what kids call their underwear, whereas adults need to call them other things. I have literally never heard this theory, and was like ‘Well what do you call yours?!’ She tells me that she just says ‘pants’ or ‘underwear’, but to me ‘pants’ are what blokes wear or what Americans call trousers, and ‘underwear’ isn’t specific enough cos there are bras etc which are also underwear. Knickers is a perfectly fine word! She then suggested ‘panties’ which we both agreed made us want to vomit.

i’m pretty sure I made her argument look ridiculous, not least because the shop itself called them knickers. But please tell me that I’ve not been mis-labelling my smalls for the last 25 years??

I wonder why so many people hate the word knickers! I’ve never had a problem with it.

Panties though, clearly, is the devil’s word. Every time I hear anyone say it I die inside. And if the person saying it is British (ie has no excuse, unlike the Americans who are brainwashed to use it by Fox News and the panty-industrial complex) then it’s ten times as bad.

“Brainwashed to use it by Fox News and the panty-industrial complex”? How did Fox News get into this conversation? 😂

I’m American and every younger woman (maybe 45 on down) that I know hates the word “panties.” Men who say it either use it in a pervy-sounding way, or as a neutral term because that’s what their mothers called women’s underpants.

LillyPJ · 06/05/2025 06:11

@echt I shall from now on call my M&S pants 'intimate apparel'. 😆

Pinkdreams · 06/05/2025 06:20

I call them underwear, bras are bras and pants are trousers

Zanatdy · 06/05/2025 06:22

I’m 48 and they are knickers. Never heard anyone say this is only a word kids use. Your friend is bonkers, pants are American term for trousers anyway not knickers.

I call them underwear, bras are bras and pants are trousers

But would you say 'I'm going to put my underwear on' when you're just putting on the lower half of your underwear (i.e. your 'knickers')?

BoredZelda · 05/05/2025 20:32

Glad you said this, I thought I was going mad. My mum used it as a swear word, I hate the word now.

Yes and some years ago, if something was no good, it was "pants".

Though AFAIK pantliners are called just that. Not knickerliners.

Exactly this! This was my point to my friend. Knickers are what I wanted to buy yesterday. Ie lower half underwear.

Bras for your boobs, knickers for your bum. If I wanted to buy a set it would be underwear!

You could also call them panties but yeah, knickers!

greengreyblue · 06/05/2025 06:53

I’m 54- knickers
DD21- knickers

fluffiphlox · 06/05/2025 07:06

‘Drawers’ obvs. (Actually I say ‘pants’).

OneFluentGoldBee · 06/05/2025 07:10

Knickers or underwear. Boxers or unders for the boys’ version. Pants are trousers/leggings/joggers, ie outerwear. Never ever say panties 🤮

TroysMammy · 06/05/2025 07:15

Grundies - grim undies.

My mum calls them knickers, so I call them knickers. Very occasionally pants 🩲 but mostly knickers. From the word knickerbockers.

But knickerbockers are trousers. As are pantaloons, come to that. So completely wrong.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 06/05/2025 07:31

In our house, pants for both me and my husband. I also used to tell my kids to "put your pants and socks on please". But I live in a part of the country where pants is the word for trousers, which could get confusing as I'm having a lot of gynaecological examinations at the moment and I'm frequently having to remove my pants and my pants.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 06/05/2025 07:42

At my stage of life they’re called apple catchers

Cyclistmumgrandma · 06/05/2025 08:23

Grew up calling them knickers but, with creeping Americanism, seem to have migrated to calling them pants. My two year old granddaughter has just started wearing 'big girl pants' and it seemed quite natural to call them that rather than 'big girl knickers'. It dates me to remember giggling when watching 'The Waltons' in my youth as John-Boy said he was going to wear knickers (meaning knickerbockers) for some event.

To call knickers… knickers?!

OneBadKitty · 05/05/2025 21:43

Knickers for women, underpants for men.

This. Never any confusion when knickers are just female. 🤷
What next, a unisex word for bras? Maybe "chest holders"?

Also, am I the only one who dislikes people taking every opportunity to police what words we use, even casually? It gets my goat. Truly. 😠

soupyspoon · 06/05/2025 08:25

Of course they're knickers. She is an idiot

DurinsBane · 06/05/2025 08:36

Knickers for normal day use. Panties for the bedroom (‘Get those panties off’)!

PruthePrune · 06/05/2025 08:40

They are called gruds in our house. I cringe when I hear "panties".

Elroq · 06/05/2025 08:47

DurinsBane · 06/05/2025 08:36

If a man ever said ‘Get those panties off’ in a bedroom setting my vagina would instantaneously become dryer than a pot noodle in the Sahara desert on the hottest day of all time. Grim.

I think I say pants-but I can’t remember when I last said it!

maryberryslayers · 06/05/2025 08:49

Definitely knickers, pants are what small boys wear.
'Panties' are for perverts.

DinoLil · 06/05/2025 08:53

Knickers or under crackers are kept in the knicker drawer.

ChaToilLeam · 06/05/2025 08:55

I say knickers or pants. Sometimes drawers.

Never, ever panties! 🤮 Only Barry White is allowed to use that word.
