Come on mumsnet, creep my lifestyle!

Inspired by the personal stylist post - I’m wondering what is the best thing you’ve bought for yourself?

Mine has 100% been my peloton and all the dumbbells. First exercise I’ve ever stuck to!

Psychotherapy, retraining for a new career, losing weight, prioritising time for close friends and family.

I love how people proudly say 'University'. Aye, right. Please remember that bus drivers were taxed so you could get your degrees. Investment, my arse.

Don’t be ridiculous. We need people who are educated. My dad was a bus driver and if he were still alive he would be very pleased his daughter had a good job. My brother worked in a factory for years and he shines with pride when he talks about his son who landed a great job.

I went on life changing psilocybin retreats in the Netherlands, some in a group and 121, they have been truly transformative.

I have been able to connect with my feelings in ways that I just couldn't in therapy. I'm a better parent, partner, friend, colleague and I am so much nicer to myself. I can say that now I love myself and I love the parts of me that I disliked before.

I am so thankful that I was able to go and couldn't have done it without the mushrooms and therapist(s)/facilitators.

Hey - would I be able to DM you about this? I'm interested in pursuing this myself but wanted a recommendation as there are a fair few available now. ☺️

You do realise that people pay for their degrees, do you? At least in England. Most people take out loans of £9.5k a year in fees plus another £7-8k living expenses. Most students leave uni with debt of around £50k unless they have family help or they work. Many will have a job throughout their course and even support their families, so take that massive chip off your shoulder.

10 years group psychotherapy. Saved my life.

Battling to finish my degree - took 5 years.

Students get loans from the government which they pay back and the likelihood of a better wage post degree means that they are likely to pay more tax, which in turn could benefit the bus driver who may need support further down the line from the benefits system or the work that the graduate does i.e. doctor

It’s about balance and benefiting all in society where possible to reach their potential and access opportunities and help when needed.

Uni in my 30's, got my dream career.

Weight loss injections. Currently weaning off them, 6 stone down. My work uniform has gone for a size 24 to a size 10. Theyve changed my life.

I have recently started a prescribed skin care routine and feel 2 weeks in its going to be worth the cost.

My next step is botox. My previously plumped out forehead is now much less plumped out. Turns out being obese can keep you looking younger, who knew. Im booked in for a consultation soon.

I just want to, for the first time in my life, feel good about myself in my 40's

Fantastically well done with the weight loss. Do you have lots of loose skin also did you do exercise whilst on the drugs?

MiddleAgedButterfly · 05/05/2025 09:09

My allotment. It’s been the best investment for physical and mental health.

What is interesting about this thread is that it’s split between people who say money they spent on their appearance and others who say money spent on career and personal growth. Interesting to see what ‘investment’ means to people.

Bikergran · 05/05/2025 09:11

Lasik treatment on my eyes. Worn glasses since I was 6, really thick awful lenses (even with HRI glass). Struggled with old-fashioned contact lenses for years as well. Now I only occasionally need glasses for reading very small print, and instead of being complex lenses costing hundreds of pounds, they are £2 from the bargain shop!!

I did do a lot of research first, didn't go to a cheaper clinic, the bloke who did mine was a consultant ophthalmic surgeon who trained at Moorfields specialist eye hospital.

That's a really distasteful thing to say when there are literally people starving to death each day.

Very interesting, and no one has mentioned financial investments which has surprised me.
Also here for pilates video recommendation.

There are also people who say money spent on their health. In my case not going blind.

Doing a fine art degree (changed the way I see the world)
Laser hair removal on legs
Magic mushrooms for depression
Buying a home of my own
Travelling a lot in my 20s - so many good memories and friends came out of it.

Semi-successful:
Therapy (don’t think I ever found someone quite right for me)
Weight loss jabs (lost weight but too many side effects to lose as much as I hoped)

I have some lose skin yes, but i had stretch marks knees to shoulders from pregnancy so expected some lose skin, its nothing a bodysuit under my clothes cant hold in though. I started C25K a couple of months back, once my joints had recovered a bit from carrying the extra weight, that was going well but ive had to pause it, and tbh, i dont really enjoy it. Im now looking at gyms to join and start weight training/pilates to tone up when im able to. But it wasnt needed for the weight loss.

If you are considering them, my best tip is stay on the lowest dose that works for you, then move up when you need to. I moved up very quickly and thats not the best way, looking back on my journey with them, i should have stayed on the second dose much longer than i did, instead i moved up every 4 weeks.

How much are weight loss jabs

There is a weight loss injections board if you are looking for more information (so not to derail this thread).

Prices from some of the safe registered pharmacies available on monj.co.uk

A standing desk. Literally changed my life. I have a desk based business/job and put on several stones due to being sedentary for 8 hours per day. Now I stand most of the day, I’ve lost 8 stones in weight, no longer suffer back and joint pain, reversed t2 diabetes and no longer have high blood pressure.

8 stone! I need to try this 😆

How much are weight loss jabs

My first one was around £130 and subsequent ones get more expensive the stronger the dose. Mine are about £180 every 4 months. There are cheaper suppliers if you can be arsed to chop and change providers but I can’t so I’m sticking with the same ones I’ve used since the beginning as the offer a variety of maintenance options for afterwards.
If you want to know more there is a whole board for it, go and have a nose about on there, you might find it answers other questions you have.

notadrift · 05/05/2025 09:18

Divorce.
I would probaly be dead if had not. My child would not be happy and on track for university, for sure.

He was horrifically abusive and controlling.

Apart from that; eating well.

Next goal: skincare and giving up booze.

Do you have any recommendations for good instructors to watch? I've never found one I liked (not that I've tried very hard, the choice is overwhelming!)

On Instagram:

Rachael Attard
Paola Pilates
Jennie Sonderlind
Hilal Leigh Pilates
Ashely DeLeon Pilates

I use the free stuff on Instagram for ideas for routines but there are probably full videos you can pay for on YouTube.

You only need to do 10 mins a day to see real results to your body.

My hysterectomy. After 24 years of horrendous pain and random bleeding I feel like a completely different person.

hby9628 · 05/05/2025 09:20

strength training has made such a positive difference to my life. My sciatica is much better and i just feel stronger both physically and mentally. I’m not really that strong but I feel like I can be.
