Come on mumsnet, creep my lifestyle!

Inspired by the personal stylist post - I’m wondering what is the best thing you’ve bought for yourself?

Mine has 100% been my peloton and all the dumbbells. First exercise I’ve ever stuck to!

Invisalign for my crooked teeth (I’m 61F) Currently half way through treatment, can’t believe how better my teeth look already. Bonus is my R sided nasal/sinus issues have almost completely gone away after bothering me for the past few years, esp at night. Maybe due to the Invisalign? Who knows but I’m over the moon!

Braces and regular hygienist appointments
running shoes
monthly deep tissue massages
good food
high thread count bedding
bamboo socks
dermatica skin care

I never used to do any of the above but they now are my essentials and I feel much better for them.

Cookielover64 · 05/05/2025 08:43

Private consultant for a skin condition, it's finally under control after suffering for years.

Paying extra to join the nice hotel gym with spa because I now actually go.

Education - I got a degree from a US university and I’m now doing an apprenticeship to be a solicitor (in my 40s while being a primary caregiver to two children, one with SEN). My first degree has resulted in a very well paid and flexible job and continues to provide opportunities for personal development. It’s never too late to invest in your education.

Do you mind if I ask what degree/job, please?

Cookielover64 · 05/05/2025 08:45

Oh and a decent mattress, pillows, duvet and quality bedding. I've never stayed in a hotel as comfy as my own bed, which has kinda ruined nights away 🙃

RoadtoVima · 05/05/2025 08:50

Good skin care and laser hair removal, salon cut and colour frequently..

Biggest investment though, was breast reduction surgery. It has changed my life in a number of ways for the absolute better!

funinthesun19 · 05/05/2025 08:51

Microdermabrasion for my face. Non invasive and very effective.

I did this in my mid forties - after not fully smiling for most of my life - I ended up with perfect white straight teeth and I could not stop smiling my head off and it seemed to change the shape of my face slightly.
Hope you also get as much pleasure from your final result @Coaster99 !

needmoresheep · 05/05/2025 08:54

Lens replacement surgery in 2019 so no more varifocal glasses
Weight loss injections to get rid of 4 stone
Water flossing to reduce private dentist bills
Quality mattress to help sleep

But most importantly was going to university. My degree has enabled me to pay for all above and retire early 💪🏻

Probably University.

I think my life would have been considerably bleaker if I hadn't gone.

University is an investment by the state to a large degree, unless it is fully self-funded.

MrsJoanDanvers · 05/05/2025 08:55

Doing a degree in my thirties during a divorce which was hard but means I have a nice job which I now do part time. Paying for an online dating subscription which meant I met my wonderful dh-when not many people were meeting online. 15 years on, I still love to wake up with him. Paying for my kids’ driving lessons as I wanted them to have this skill set and now they give me lifts!

MayaPinion · 05/05/2025 08:57

Committing to going back into work every day instead of working from home. I’ve lost weight because I’m not near the fridge and I’m moving more, lower energy bills, the set up is better - more comfortable chair, bigger screen - feel less isolated, got to build better relationships with colleagues I didn’t know so well before and discovered lots of synergies and opportunities for collabs that wouldn’t have happened had I been at home, and best of all, I’ve turned my office back into a comfortable sitting/dining room.

I am consciously avoiding working from home and having work stretch into evenings and weekends, and this has given me a much better work life balance. Work now starts at 9am and finishes at 5pm.

Hwi · 05/05/2025 08:57

I love how people proudly say 'University'. Aye, right. Please remember that bus drivers were taxed so you could get your degrees. Investment, my arse.

Shit Hot Divorce Lawyer and Razor Sharp Barrister. Not monetary, but seeking help from Women's Aid post marital breakdown to deal with the issues left by years of abuse.

More recently gym membership, WLI, and eating overhaul.

Studying for my professional qualification (paying the course fees myself).

Whilst on that first course module I met a woman who I used to discuss answers to the questions with. After a couple of months she invited me for an interview as they had a vacancy in her department. I got the job and part of the benefits was the company paying for my course and exams - worth many thousands over several years. The job also came with a big pay rise which increased a lot as I passed more exams and I’ve been there for 15 years.

ChampagneLassie · 05/05/2025 08:58

This is a really interesting thread. There are several I agree with, nose job, therapy m. But my best investment is lots of household help freeing my time to work/spend with kids. We currently have cleaners 3 days a week and a nanny 5 days who cleans whilst baby sleeps.

Another vote for this!
.
People ask me if I spend hours in the gym as I looked so toned. They can’t believe it’s just from ten minutes of Pilates once a day.

Which videos do you do?

A standing desk. Literally changed my life. I have a desk based business/job and put on several stones due to being sedentary for 8 hours per day. Now I stand most of the day, I’ve lost 8 stones in weight, no longer suffer back and joint pain, reversed t2 diabetes and no longer have high blood pressure.

Do you also have a walking pad? I've been offered a standing desk, and considering nabbing my daughters pad which is gathering dust. Just not sure how easy it will be to use whilst working!!
Well done on the weight loss!

Is this accountancy? I’m considering switching, but at 50 that boat as probably sailed…

My education - incurring my student loan to pay for uni, and then post grad qualifications. (And then being able to pay it back with the career I got as a result).

Same here .

Botox.

I was honestly one of those women who swore they would grow old gracefully without any tweakments. Then I caught myself in the mirror a few times looking really angry and a bit haggard because of my 11s and forehead lines, so after much deliberation, I had botox at 40.

It's made me look so fresh. Not younger, but fresh.

Now if I ever had to choose between botox and eating, I'd happily starve!

That's a really distasteful thing to say when there are literally people starving to death each day.

Doing pilates at home on YouTube. At 55 I never thought i could get so toned and fit... Ive got strong abs now and toned arms! It helps to ease my achy back and stiffness. I used to go the the gym but for me, pilates beats it hands down for results.

@crystalize please could you share which Pilates YouTube you use?

I have been wanting to do this for a while & it would be great to have some recommendations!

Thank you!
