Come on mumsnet, creep my lifestyle!

Inspired by the personal stylist post - I’m wondering what is the best thing you’ve bought for yourself?

Mine has 100% been my peloton and all the dumbbells. First exercise I’ve ever stuck to!

Mounjaro and cold water swimming (now just open water swimming as it’s not really cold anymore!).
Both have had such a mind blowingly significant impact on me.

Laser hair removal on full legs, bikini line and underarms. Did this 20 yrs ago and it’s been a brilliant investment!

A fasting retreat in France a few years ago.

Lense replacement eye surgery today. All being well, it will be a long term life changer!

PS - love this thread- thanks @HeyItsPickleRick!

Doing pilates at home on YouTube. At 55 I never thought i could get so toned and fit... Ive got strong abs now and toned arms! It helps to ease my achy back and stiffness. I used to go the the gym but for me, pilates beats it hands down for results.

Who do you watch please? I go to one Pilates class a week (would like to do more but have to work) so an online lesson I can do anytime would be great! Thanks.

The calm app! My sleep was so poor before and now I get to sleep more easily and if I wake can get back very quickly. This makes me feel so much better in the day.

Proper curly haircut, it’s done with the hair dry initially, it’s expensive but since then I’ve actually started to like my curly hair!

For those recommending laser eye surgery or other types of eye surgeries, is there a surgical option for people whose vision has only deteriorated after the age of 40, particularly those who need separate glasses for both reading and driving? I’m really frustrated, as I don't get on with verifocals and am constantly switching between glasses, it is so limiting.

Yes! Multi focal lense replacement (not laser). I had no idea about it until I saw an ad and went for a free assessment. Surgery is today!

Therapy and having my colours done

Gundogday · 05/05/2025 07:55

When I saw the title of the thread, I immediately thought of the ‘Style by Susie’ online consultation I did a few years ago which determined my shape, colour and gave me lots of ideas of clothes and make up I should wear (and avoid). Even last week, I was shopping with a friend and we still referred to it.

Makes shopping so much easier and has given me so much more confidence. For once I feel stylish rather than struggling. Not saying I get it right all the time, and I still have ‘what do I wear’ days?’ but it’s so much easier now.

My husband paid but a bean to cup coffee machine- I instantly feel better having a decent coffee in the morning and it's saved me a fortune!

How did you find a good therapist? I started earlier this year with one I found through BetterHelp but, to be blunt, didn’t find him clever/insightful enough and sacked it off!

Read up a little about different types of therapy - it does depend on why you are attending. But also, see can you ring a few and have a chat. The relationship is most important and you want someone you click with and you can challenge you appropriately and compassionately. Think about what you want. Ask people around for recommendations.

Weight loss injections, life changing.

Helped me lose a significant amount of weight over the last year, off two medications I no longer need, blood pressure normal, more mobile and starting to exercise again.

Is second this. I’ve lost 25% of my body weight. I can do yoga hiking jogging. 0 aches and pains. I’m loving life

squashyhat · 05/05/2025 08:00

An electric bike. I have rheumatoid arthritis and although it's pretty well controlled with medication I have gradually had to cut back on walking for exercise over the years. It's quite hilly where I live and I'm amazed how far I can get. An added bonus is I'm using the car less for short journeys.

Thank you. I'm mid 50s (54), would they consider doing it at my age? How much are you having to pay? How do you start the process? Via the GP or opticians, e.g. Specsavers?

Wishing you all the best with your surgery.

Driving lessons. The best jobs I've had have been jobs that required a driving licence.

I have a couple of friends who've never learned to drive (I'm 69, and it wasn't that unusual for my generation) and their lives are so restricted by it.

Ooh I have loved reading this thread!!
Laser eye surgery- had in 2004, my eyesight was awful and I became intolerant to contact lens, still the best money I ever spent!
Working part time- love that I have time for the kids and not completely shattered the whole time.
Adjustable free weights for exercising at home (I do the free Caroline Girvan workouts on you tube)

You need to shop around- the first three I tried were rubbish. The fourth one was wonderful.

My best investment is probably regular massages!

IVF

Of course, can't believe I forgot this one! Sperm from a sperm bank, loads of expensive tests, three failed rounds of IUI, egg collection, one round of IVF with ICSI, then storage for the embryos... all for one little baby (now toddler), who is worth every penny!

Mountainormolehills · 05/05/2025 08:20

My most recent are therapy and a love coach once therapy had ended. She really helped me look forward and value myself so I wouldn’t make the same mistakes while dating again. It worked!

Tretinoin. Invisalign. A Philips Lumea. Divorce. All life changing in various ways!

Definitely therapy for alcohol dependancy.
I gave up drinking three years ago.
I had tried AA but I found it too cliquey so I sought someone just for me.

As time went on I also bought any food I fancied. Seafood, posh fruit etc. I'd put on a huge amount of weight during my drinking years. I'm now six stones lighter and eat what I please.
I am also selling some investments so I can retire.

Nose job in my early twenties (when I was earning an adult salary but didn't have any kids!)

I'd never have the guts to do it now, but I'm so glad I just went ahead and got it done when I was young and impulsive.
