To not really love the may bank holiday?

boiledrice · 04/05/2025 16:55

Two kids (4 and 1.)

I already have Tuesdays and Wednesdays off.

I do love them and everything but by Monday I’m ready to go back to work for a break …

This is transient. The may b/h is awsome! I say that as someone with 1yo and a 3yo.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 04/05/2025 17:42

I don't like it as I'm working it.

Livingthebestlife · 04/05/2025 17:46

I was hoping for a quiet one but one of my sister's turned up yesterday morning with her 2 kids, dh and suitcases all shouting "surprise", they do this a lot to everyone. They think it's brilliant to just turn up at your door. It was a mad dash trying to hide all the washing and crap and find beds for them. Sent them out today as my head hurts.

TartanMammy · 04/05/2025 17:50

I can't be arsed with it because the kids just went back to school two weeks ago and now they've got another two days off that I need to take annual leave for 🙄

modgepodge · 04/05/2025 17:56

Yeah I’m not loving it. I’m spending £102 in nursery which I can’t use. I have Fridays off so yeah by Monday I’m ready for the kids to be back at school. Money is quite tight at the moment so can’t really afford to go out and do anything fun it’ll be another trip to the park I expect. And this year it’s too close to Easter, so I’m even less inclined to appreciate it!

What the hell?! I hope you return the favour

Sunbline · 04/05/2025 17:58

There's a lot bundled close together at this time of year and it would be nice if they were spread out a bit more. I used to enjoy shift work because I got more pay, could then choose to use the day wherever I wanted if I had to work it.

cornflourblue · 04/05/2025 17:59

Normal day for me thankfully, DC at school and DH and I working as usual.

Miley23 · 04/05/2025 17:59

It does seem a bit too close to Easter weekend and then we have another in a couple of weeks. I would prefer them a bit more spread out but I suppose there's no control over when Easter falls.

ThisIsMeTryingNow · 04/05/2025 18:01

Solidarity - been there, done it. This feeling will pass.

Personally, this is my favourite bank holiday of the year. I’m a teacher and this is the only one we get that’s not in a school holiday.

Wow ! Shock

It was a mad dash trying to hide all the washing and crap and find beds for them

Why would you do that ?
I'd let them know it wasn't convenient and that they need to arrange a convenient date with you before they come and stay.

beautyqueeen · 04/05/2025 18:05

DD5 only went back to school this week, then is off again tomorrow then only 3 more weeks until spring bank, it’s all just a bit much! May Day BH is the most pointless of them all to me, most people work as normal, it’s not attached to any celebration or half term…I lose one of my days off alone and I have to pay for a dance class that isn’t on 🙄

I don't understand why you tolerate this!

Exactly it would happen once and it definitely wouldn't be repeated.
You can't just turn up mob handled at someone's door surprise were here for the weekend 🤯🤯

Howspieduh · 04/05/2025 18:15

I suppose it might be because I only have one (he's 3) but I'm having to work and I'm not pleased about it!😩 I also have Tues, Weds off!

hban · 04/05/2025 18:19

Accidentally pressed the wrong button,

but no it’s normal and fine, you already spend a lot of time with them so it’s different.

i am choosing to work a half day on Monday and often like to get ahead on bank hols when it’s quiet. But I get a lot of time with my kids/lots of holidays generally so it’s not a big deal to have an extra day

Marble10 · 04/05/2025 18:28

Monday is my day off to get sorted from the week before/weekend chaos. It’s my day… which is now
not my day 😩

boiledrice · 04/05/2025 18:28

(I’m a teacher too,)

Normally the Monday back at work breaks it up a bit. The kids together are hard work, quite nice on their own but have to admit I could do with a break (going to work.) And year 11 could certainly use the revision.

Don’t you get paid for bank holidays?

modgepodge · 04/05/2025 18:32

Atarin · 04/05/2025 18:29

Don’t you get paid for bank holidays?

No. I’m self employed, so if I don’t do any work (which I can’t as I have to look after my kids that day) I don’t get paid.

Drearycommuter · 04/05/2025 18:52

Sorry to be so distracted but I am so shocked by @Livingthebestlife!!! what on earth! I am very easy going but a whole family turning up as though you’re just waiting around with nothing to do! Don’t people turn them away?!

Hallywally · 04/05/2025 18:57

I work full time so love the bank holidays! Always feel sad when May is over and there aren’t many left.

Livingthebestlife · 04/05/2025 19:03

I know I shouldn't tolerate this but they're family 😞 I can't really turn them away. I think I'm the only one who doesn't like this, everyone else seems to love it. No one turns them away.

MidoriNoRingo · 04/05/2025 19:09

I’m working and it’s double time so I can’t complain! Childcare is an issue though as my husband and I are both shift workers

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 04/05/2025 19:27

Another teacher here! I've always loved any bank holidays. I never had a teaching job which felt like a rest compared with looking after my own two tbh. Especially now they are 17 and 19 (and one of them is at uni) Grin
