To think this country’s gone to S***

Second time now I’ve sat down to have drinks with a friend only to be met with “I don’t agree with Farage, but…”

Cue a rant about Muslims, immigrants, how the country is not what they remember in the good old days.

More and more people are starting to spout this drivel about immigrants. Yesterday it was literally ‘I’m not racist, I have asian family, but’ and then cue racist rant.

I feel like the country I love that used to be fair and tolerant has gone to shit.

One of the biggest problems we are facing in terms of extremism and terrorism comes from the right wing - chiefly low achieving angry white men. Would you like to say anything about that?

Yeah, I'll say something about it. Liberals have done a sterling job in convincing themselves that it's race and gender that are the problems in this country and have made leaps and bounds in tackling both things. The trouble is that it's actually class that is the biggest factor in inequality, so we've been busy, as a country, putting the needs of very naice middle class ethnic minorities ahead of white working class kids, mainly boys.

A CEO friend of mine had an initiative in his company to give disadvantaged kids work experience, leading to apprenticeships if they were any good. He championed two white working class boys and HR were up in arms because they weren't the right sort of disadvantaged. The two lads in question didn't even have money for their lunch every day.

Fucking liberals. Deliberately ignoring class because if THAT particular playing field were levelled up a bit, they might have to share a bit more of their spoils.

@sowemeetagainbananaman They are not “hotels” as we would know them.
they are deeply unpleasant places to live.

I'm sure the owners of the Holiday Inn in Hoylake and the Metropole Hotel in Blackpool would like to see your views published on Trip Advisor (Sarcasm)

I could mention more but I'd be here all day...

Idiot. They are hotel buildings. They are no longer hotels inside, they are in fact, more like.detention centres.

Do you actually realise this? They're not being served, cleaned up after, or treated like guests in any way. It is no longer a hotel.

So bearing in mind that half the world wants to come to UK, how many do you envisage taking in (and supporting) and how will this be paid for?

What makes you think half the world wants to come here? There are tens of millions of refugees in the world and only one in 250 of those are in the UK.

How many people have been killed by rightwing terrorism vs islamic terrorism in the Uk in the last ten years? Just out of curiosity, because this sounds like bullshit to me.

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 04/05/2025 13:04

This country has gone to shit because we've allowed migrants to pour in in their droves.

And we're not a muslin country its ok to be concerned with how much influence these people are having.

Walrusdress · 04/05/2025 13:04

In this world you will find that many people think differently to you. They likely think it's gone to sh*t for different reasons.

So UK has 0.4% of global population but 0.8% of refugees? Seems like already accepting more than our share.

Guessing you aren’t London-based?

Actually, it's gone to shit because of this, if you're interested.

But it's probably easier for you to hate on "Muslins"
Do you mean Muslims? Or do you have information on the dangers of cheesecloth to society as we know it?

TIA

One example out of how many Islamic attacks 🤔

Booboobagins · 04/05/2025 13:15

Why are they racist? They are complaining about unrestricted immigration into a country that has a bigger social bill versus taxation it collects - we're going bankrupt! If we were a business we'd be getting rid of people not taking more on.

Racism and calling people racist is completely overused. If someone insults another based on their race or religion it's racism. Saying you're worried about the effect uncontrolled illegal immigration into the UK is not racism. It's calling out an economic issue. This is what is affecting our culture not racism, though look at how these people treat this country and I can understand why blood is boiling over the negatove impact they are having in localised areas across the UK - just litter alone is horrendous - that's a key cultural difference right there...

YABU and so is everyone who thinks complaints about immigration are racist complaints, they're not.

And just to be crystal clear - we need economic immigrants. Our policies on this are imo weak, we'd be better to review immigration policies of Australia, New Zealand, Canada and USA and take the best out of each to bring in young people to work in specific industries, like agriculture, qualified engineers and workers to supplement critical services like the NHS and education to reduce the number of workers leaving the services and coming back on contract etc.

I have written to the Home Office to ask them to train the unemployed to process assylum applications more quickly, killing 2 birds with one stone so to speak by

  • reducing unemployment
  • removing failed applicants and banning their return
  • enabling those who are successful to gain employment (it should be a condition if assylum that they earn money)

The gravy train needs to be switched off too. The reason pensioners lost their £200, the disabled will lose PIP and the unemployed are being demonised is because the social bill is higher than taxation income. Rachel Reeves has a massively difficult job to do yet most people here think its ok that we keep taking illegal immigrants, housing them, feeding them and funding them... get real.

Wait until we dont have enough water and then think on whether it was OK to continue to accept people into the UK... the issue of immigration is not about race or religion, its ultimately about survival.

@WinterMornif you want a safer society start with border control. Losing control over that doesn’t help. On both ends of the spectrum.

cramptramp · 04/05/2025 13:16

I’m no fan of farage or reform, but there is a reason they are so popular and if the other parties don’t start listening and reacting, reform will be in with a big chance of winning the next election.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 04/05/2025 13:16

I don’t object to border control. However, that has nothing to do with the question I was responding to,

Oh, I think they are listening and reacting. That’s why the Labour government are proposing to strip benefits away from genuinely disabled claimants. This proposal is even worse than the misery inflicted on the disabled community by the Tories for the 14 years they were in power.

It does. Because rw extremism is a backlash.

They are not “hotels” as we would know them.

they are deeply unpleasant places to live.

I think we should be helping those people.

but I think the manner in which it’s done is just a mess and it promotes so much hatred and fear and discontent amongst certain people here.

I think the whole system is a mess.

as regards British people, I don’t disagree if Thatchers “if you can work, you should work” and if that’s litter picking until you work your way up to something better, so be it.

people need to contribute to society. For society’s sake and for their own wellbeing.

A good society need to take care of those who need it. And we absolutely need to do that. But we are also bankrolling a load of spongers who contribute nothing, and that needs to stop. Benefits, for some, is a way of life.

and the counter argument to this is always “people scamming the benefit system is a drop in the ocean compared to the millions that companies like Amazon are tax dodging”

well yeah, so? That needs sorted too. They are not mutually exclusive.

so in general OP, yes, I agree, the country is a mess.

Agreed
More than happy to pay for those who need it. In fact after covid and the war I expected to and, other than fiscal drag, I am not
But despise those who avoid it

WinterMorn · 04/05/2025 13:24
