Glitter Tattoo at school

Ghrace · 03/05/2025 18:02

My DD has just turned 5 on Thursday, for her birthday my sister did a little glitter tattoo on her arm. When her school cardigan was on it wasn’t noticeable but at some point in the day she must have taken it off. The teacher pulled me aside at the end of the day and said she’s not allowed glitter tattoos and it has to be gone for Tuesday.

My issue is following Eid and before Easter holidays 2 little girls in her class came back to school for the last few days with Henna, which to me is the same vibe as a glitter tattoo. This was on their arms and hands so noticeable even with cardigans on. I know the mum well and know they never said anything about the Henna.

AIBU to think it’s not very fair that Henna is okay but Glitter Tattoos aren’t? Should I ask the school more about this policy?

DH thinks Henna is probably fine as it’s “cultural”.

So one family can take a day off school and have their version of temporary tattoo for a religion they otherwise don’t participate in (mum goes to church, the kids are baptised etc.)
Maybe we should all start celebrating Eid so we can all access the more relaxed rules - doesn’t seem like religion is relevant as they aren’t Muslim!

Your kids get two weeks off for Christmas: do they spend most of that time in church giving thanks for the glorious mysteries of the nativity? Some how I’m guessing not. Christians or even nominally, culturally Christians get time off for all their major festivals, no questions asked. People of different religions have to use up their leave and take their kids out of school to celebrate.

How is this Mum taking her kids to celebrate Eid when they are not especially religious any different from people celebrating Christmas when they don’t believe in Christ? It’s just culture.

I think you should publish the order in which you are allowed to do certain things, like am I allowed to do the dietary restrictions before or after the prayers, and are the funeral rites or the weddings customs the thing you are allowed to do first?

Also do the same for me please, I could use some help with my catholicism. Am I allowed to get married in church if I haven't done lent? Do I have to abstain from sex before the wedding before I am to baptize my kids? Also, if I haven't observed my religion in any way that you have observed, does it still count if I did in ways you are not aware off?

Thank you 😚

Jesus, stop trying to twist things to make out she is racist…..some people try and read racism in everything?!?

No twisting needed from me at all.
I am not the one twisting a childs glitter tattoo into a rant about Muslims

CwmYoy · 03/05/2025 19:03

I'm betting OP voted reform.
I wonder if she realises how she looks to most of us. It's not pretty.

Kilroyonly · 03/05/2025 19:04

When my kids were in state school it used to bother me that the schools were so difficult about taking time off but anyone who was a different religion could have days off for religious observances. I just told them we were Jewish & kids got loads of days off. Just do the same they can’t do anything about it as it’s such a (ridiculous) minefield

Lostworlds · 03/05/2025 19:05

I wouldn’t make a big deal out of it and would wash it off before Tuesday.

Mickeychampionwhatgoodami · 03/05/2025 19:05

I'm betting most of us have never been bored enough to go radge about something so inconsequential.

I am white and I have an opinion. My opinion is that the OP is expressing ignorant, bigoted views. I also think glitter tattoos are tacky and not at all comparable with henna.

Do you really think every one disagreeing with the OP is Muslim?

I think hyenas only attack in groups

Because as far as I know you don’t need Henna to celebrate Eid anymore than you need a glitter tattoo to celebrate a Birthday?

I think it’s because people can be allergic to glitter, which may not stay on your little girl’s arm, but not to henna (which doesn’t scatter)?

For reference, my MIL has an anaphylactic response to glitter if she comes into contact with it. Christmas is a nightmare and we’ve had to change decorations and be careful when buying gift-wrap/cards.

Bringmeahigherlove · 03/05/2025 19:08

Not the same.

Congratulations OP
I am actually impresssed that you have managed to turn a 5 year olds glitter tattoo into a thread complaining about Muslims

Edited

I saw someone blame immigration for a crack in the local parks pond bridge the other day, was pretty impressed at that, but this is a contender for first place

I’m not Muslim, but I still think her opinions make her sound like a knob.

Yes the father is Muslim - but the children are baptised, attend a church school and dad isn’t involved!

The mum is trying to make sure her children understand both sides of their heritage, @Ghrace - this is a good thing for them.

A glitter tattoo is not the same as the henna - one is just fashion, the other is culturally important - I hope you can try to see the difference.

Lol at mumsnet not finding anything in this thread against community guidelines when the OP is being blatantly racist and bigoted.

oh my actual god. This is so racist and wrong. Read up on henna. No guesses who you voted for yesterday.

We can’t just call everything racist when there’s no actual racism here
