Thought it would be nice to start a positive post so what things make you happy big or small .. some of mine are seeing the kids laughing having fun, gardening, tapas and a cocktail in the sun, having a weekend day of no plans, exploring interesting new places and ..sleep 😂

All bills paid, food in the fridge and enough money to get me through the next payday.
Years of poverty made me relish the simple things.

I really appreciate my life generally. I think sometimes of starting threads like these, but I fear doing it in case I get jumped on for boasting! Alongside some phenomenal luck, I have also been able to make some decisions that made life better.

About 15 years ago, my DH and I were both really suffering under various aspects of dissatisfaction with life. We were talking about it, and we said that we don't know what the changes are going to be, but by this time next year things will be better. We aren't religious, it wasn't a prayer, it just seemed to be a mindset shift that lifted us up and out of the difficulties, to be able to problem solve and be open to new ideas. We ended up leaving where we'd both lived for about 20 years, to a place we'd never heard of and didn't know anyone.

Everything about where we live now is so suited to us. We left noisy, dirty, cramped chaos, and moved to a spacious, airy, leafy place where the streets are dark and quiet at night, the dawn chorus is spectacular, we have 3 AONB around us, and the pace of town life is gentler. The little town is lovely, we've made proper friends with neighbours, but also generally know everyone in the neighbourhood and some on surrounding streets by name and to say hello to or stop and chat with. We are friends with the postie, know lots of the shop keepers well enough to have a good chat with. I have joked that it's like living on the set of a children's programme because it's so idyllic.

Over the years we've decorated the house in ways that I'd never previously invested, but had always admired, and everything is a joy for me to look at, and the front and back gardens are magical things of beauty thanks to my DH's skills.

Although the cost of living continuously rising is anxiety provoking, our life together has simplified massively since the pandemic, so we're ok so far. I worry about it a little bit, but I can also see how we could tighten our belts - we stopped buying fresh salmon a couple of years ago, but aren't yet living mostly off lentils - and I love lentils, so that won't be a hardship if it comes to that!

In this moment in time, all my family are well, that's not always the case, so this is a good moment to catch our breaths. My job is good. There's so much that makes me happy.

nottheplan · 03/05/2025 11:21

Obviously the big things -my beautiful family , jobs, good health.

The smaller things - coming into summertime, everything seems so much easier.
Friday nights in with a gin watching Gogglebox.
Fresh pjs, sheets and lying in at the weekend.
Taking dc for a treat and seeing their little faces light up.

Ds is 20 has a good work ethic and good with money plus ambition.

A far cry from when he would get umpteen detentions at school and he also never enjoyed stydying! It just goes to show how much they can change once older.

It was as if going to school never really suited him lol.

Poisonwood · 03/05/2025 11:26

Hearing children laugh, cup of tea with DH out of our thermos (with a biscuit) walking on the deserted shore, fresh bedding, coal fire, daily yoga and meditation.

Day to day it's my family, especially DS, friends, the wonderful area I live in with its varied independent shops, eating curry, sitting out iny garden drinking tea by day or wine by night.

I'm on a budget during these years of single parenting and don't really get holidays (private school and mortgage on a lovely house instead so can't moan) so when I get to travel with work it makes me really happy. I used to be a total globe trotter and really miss it. I've just booked a business class flight to Asia and am overjoyed. All the fun of travel without the horrible journey either side. I'll get 1.5 days on my own between work things there too!

OutandAboutMum1821 · 03/05/2025 11:41

What a lovely question/post OP! 😊

Mine are spending time with my children, spending time with my husband/rest of our family/good friends, reading, swimming,
being outdoors anywhere, gardening, being at the beach, being anywhere near water, visiting new places/countries I’ve never been, having interesting conversations, studying something new, going to the theatre, eating delicious food.

outerspacepotato · 03/05/2025 11:41

I'm a big fan of sunny days and painting.

Rowing, gardening, taking a walk and people watching.

Theeternalrocksbeneath · 03/05/2025 11:42

My animals. My wonderful, bonkers, army of beautiful creatures that I get to call mine.

I get up at 5am every day of the year to look after them and the pure joy they give me never fails to lift my spirits, no matter what else may be going on in my life.

My husband also makes me very happy, but he talks a little bit too much to me sometimes 😄 never have that problem with the zoo!

We live in the middle of nowhere. I am surrounded daily by wild countryside with no neighbours for miles and that too makes me happy.

Coffee and carrot cake also do the job.

Justfreedom · 03/05/2025 11:48

Doing what i like and not caring what others think.
Waking up every day knowing im free.
Like today i have nothing to do so im going to have a mooch around the fun fair this afternoon.
I dont do rides but will blow about £40-£50 on the win a prize every time.
And soke up the atmosphere.

Clarinet1 · 03/05/2025 11:51

Well I’m glad to have a home of my own (a little over 55’s flat) with no mortgage, four or five good friends who lift my spirits whenever I see them or phone them. I guess those are the big things.

Slightly smaller things are getting to the end of a dialysis session (three times a week) and going anywhere to play or hear music!

ViciousCurrentBun · 03/05/2025 11:56

I just spent a week on the Motorhome that DH and I just bought, stayed on 2 farms. One was so remote there was zero Wi-Fi. Surrounded by sheep and lambs and climbed a decent peak and did a couple of 7 mile hikes. Very up and down ones. Also did a flat walk along a river.

Sent lots of pics to friends when we got home last night and DS had cooked dinner for us for our return.

Its quiet countryside, the sea and loved ones for me every time, especially the face I have woken up next to for close to 30 years.

Moier · 03/05/2025 11:57

Number 1 my family.
I am blessed to have two wonderful amazing daughters.. and equally amazing Grandchildren.. a very close family.
Second.. holidays in the sun.. Best medication there is for my aching body.
Third... reading and music my two biggest passions.

EveryDayisFriday · 03/05/2025 12:06

Sitting in an empty steam room at the gym (I feel I've hit the jackpot if no-one else is in) after a good workout.

Introducing my favourite movies to my teens DDs.

When my beautiful spreadsheets are up to date and work perfectly.

Sat in a comfy seat the sun with a cold drink on MN or Tiktok or reading a book.

CoolPlayer · 03/05/2025 12:36

I’d agree that sounds perfect! x

Sunshine
Dogs
beaches
nice cake

If I can go for coffee and great cake at a cafe overlooking a beach full of dogs having fun on a sunny day that’s my ultimate happy place 😁

I’d agree that sounds perfect! x

Love the thread! Walking in nature and swimming make me happy 😍

Swimming makes me happy too ❤️. I love sunny mornings and the long stretch in the evening. I love getting a nice letter from a friend

unsync · 03/05/2025 13:26

Being single. Every day free from abuse is a joy.

Littledidsheknow · 03/05/2025 15:04

I forgot to mention swimming in the sea. All year round.
It's so good for my soul and my at-oneness with nature!

LoudPlumDog · 03/05/2025 15:14

It looks a bit different for me since we lost our youngest daughter recently.

Bushwalking with the dogs, nature is really healing
Plenty of sleep, shuts my mind off from the trauma
Baking something yummy and then trying some while watching something funny
A cuppa with a friend
A hot bath, candles, face mask, bubbles
Getting to the cemetery and sitting by myself with my thoughts and seeing others have visited

Littledidsheknow · 03/05/2025 15:20

@LoudPlumDog

I'm so sorry 💐

Stillearninglife · 03/05/2025 15:23

Washing blowing in the sunshine.
Clean bedding,
Bath with bubbles, window above the bath open with a breeze on my head. A great audiobook playing while I’m in my bath.

The house to myself.
The house cleaned, food shop done, meals planned for the week, grass cut, flowers watered and in bloom…. Waiting for my bath to fill then the above..

Funnywonder · 03/05/2025 15:23

Starting a new knitting or crochet project.
Being first up in the morning and having the house to myself.
Birdsong.
Being near the sea, even if I can only see it in the distance.
Loose leaf tea.
