I think most people get depressed in winter I am the opposite!! Don't get me wrong I do enjoy the hot weather BUT I feel like everyone is out living their best life's at the beach or in pubs with friends while I live out groundhog day.... Work, pick children up from school, dinner tidy up baths and beds..... That's my life and the sun just makes me so desperate for a social life! In reality I know everyone is probably doing the same old same old but in my head everyone's having fun in the sun except me! Tell me how unreasonable I am being lol

I'm northern Scotland so I guess the heat isnt so much of an issue up here 😊

I’d love to experience it, what is the hottest it gets to up there?

BlueCleaningCloth · 01/05/2025 10:02

I'm the same as you. Can't bear the heat, I hate waking up and it's bright and sunny outside. I much prefer winter when it's dark when you get up, dark when you finish work, cold and rainy outside. Just makes me feel so much brighter and happier. It's funny how whenever I say this people just can't believe anyone feels this way. But we do in the UK have a cultural notion that sunnier is better so I get it.

NattyTurtle59 · 01/05/2025 10:04

While lots of people don't actually like very hot weather I have never heard so many people moan about it as on MN. Anyone would think the UK is one of the hottest places on earth! Meanwhile, in real life in the rest of the world people just get on with things.

Mid twenties maximum in peak summer. Just right for me tbh, just wish it lasted a bit longer up here!

I live in the country. I can hear various birds, cows and sheep as I type. I overlook trees and fields and I hate summer. Roll on October and dark nights and mornings which I love.

No thanks! I'm a keen walker and lover of nature, and love being outside. So late autumn and winter are the absolute worst. Everything looks dead, the sky is usually gray and miserable, it's dark from the moment you wake up to the moment you leave work, and it's usually freezing cold and peeing it down with rain.

You're entitled to like what you like, but I can't help feel that anyone who likes that is more than a little weird. What is it about all of the above that possibly makes you happy? Are you just a naturally miserable person? It's a wretched time.

Yep, I hate the heat.
Happy with sunshine, I like the fact that the leaves are our on the trees, the swallows have arrived and the lanes are full of flowers and butterflies. I just wish it wasn't hot at the same time. Heat makes me quite ill.

I'd prefer all the above but chilly - cool enough so I could sleep at night and cold enough in the day so I can keep wearing my pullover. I prefer more clothes, not fewer, and sleep best under a snuggly blanket. Really quite happy driving in the dark and the odd amounts of ice and snow!

I cope with air conditioners and closed curtains, it keeps my apartment lovely and cool. Means when I go out (part-time work, shops and so forth) I can come back to a cold haven! I also have hefty air con in the car too....an absolute life saver.

Why can't you feel comfortable in a long sleeved top that isn't a jumper?

I only wear jumpers to feel warm. I prefer loose fitting clothes in hot weather as they are so much cooler.

JojoM1981 · 01/05/2025 18:07

I agree. Roll on autumn 🍁 🥮 🍂

I've always said I have reverse SAD. Nice to know I'm not the only one.

I think all the summer haters must post on MN, because there are a disproportionate number of posters on here who hate summer.

Anyway, it's going to get colder at the weekend, so you'll get the temperatures you want.

What we really need is rain. The moors by the M62 are on fire.

I love September /Autumn but always get what i think is SAD in Jan/Feb.
Can you tell me why you love Winter and what do you do that makes you love it,thanks x

I get sad after the year starts too, kind of once it gets to valentines day and pancake day etc that's when spring comes in

I quite like January because it's cold and windy 🙃 - I like a stormy, rainy January 😄 xx

So you’re calling a huge amount of people weird just because they like something different? It‘s just as valid to love winter as it is summer.
Infact there’s something very un-miserable about people who can find positives in the dark and cold, find ways to make themselves happy.

spicemaiden · 01/05/2025 18:57

I hate it but bevause I’m a sweaty, tomato faced, acne rosacea-ridden mess who can’t sleep.

Im oermenantly beet red in the face and if I’m really lucky I break out in huge spots all over my chest abc yhd rosacea spreads to my eyes.

Yay. .

it’s horrible. Truly horrible.

Things don't look dead. There are loads of evergreen trees, grass looks more lush when it hasn't been dried out by drought, you can see further through trees without leaves to more of the country. I don't associate grey with miserable. Grey sky is just grey sky, it's just cloud cover. And it didn't rain that much here this winter. I walk the dog every day. Only a handful of times in actual rain.

You're entitled to like what you like, but I can't help feel that anyone who likes that is more than a little weird. What is it about all of the above that possibly makes you happy? Are you just a naturally miserable person? It's a wretched time.
Quite the opposite. I'm a generally easy going and happy person. I'm not brought down by cooler temperatures or more rain or less daylight. I don't like the heat of summer or it being bright too long. I find it oppressive and it sometimes pisses me off. Not finding the winter wretched doesn't make me weird.

There is nothing wrong with loving winter, all seasons have their good parts. It's this intense hatred of warm (not even hot) weather that I don't understand. We have more hot and sunny weather here than the UK does and in all my 65 years I have never heard anyone complain the way MNers do, nor suffer so much when the temperature reaches what would be considered a moderate range. Yes, some people here say it's too hot, some even say they prefer cold weather, but the dramatics on MN are something else.

RampantIvy · 01/05/2025 22:31

Well said @NattyTurtle59
We have had mid 20s where I live, which is perfect weather IMO.

To be fair, I don't live in a built up area, my neighbours are quiet and mostly retired, my office has aircon (too fierce) and so does my car, so I have lots of options to mitigate the rare occasion we have very hot weather.

Where do you live?

NZ - and we've also had mid 20s temps lately, in late autumn. I have air con at home, but generally use the fan setting and only use the cooling for a short time when it is very hot. However, we managed to cope in pre air con days without all this fuss.

Maybe we’re just not used to hot weather, and yeah no pools, no air con, carpeted houses instead of tiles etc
When I lived abroad I coped with the heat much better because of the above plus acclimatising

DreamTheMoors · 02/05/2025 00:03

Where I live in California it’s inching up towards 90 already.
It’ll be 100-105 on average this summer and will hit 110 easily.
I hate it.
Who cares if the days are longer if they’re miserable? It starts getting hot at 7am and cools off at about 2am.
Not to mention the aircon costs about $million every month when it gets hot.
And in the winter it gets down to a freezing 50 degrees if we’re lucky.
It’s the fog in winter that’ll kill ya - you can’t see anything on the road in front of you. And neither can the people coming towards you in the opposite direction.
It’s called “Tule Fog” and it’s deadly.
Yeah lol it’s delightful living here.
Visit the beach or the mountains - they’re abfab.
I can’t recommend the beaches and the mountains in California highly enough.
I wish I could afford to buy a little $30MillionUSD beach house or a $12M cabin up in the mountains.
I think they should just gift me one.
God it’s hot.

To hate this weather....

Most people here don't have pools and most people have carpeted houses. The UK really isn't that hot .......

faerietales · 02/05/2025 07:15

I work outdoors and this week has been amazing - but actually a bit hot already for the dogs over lunchtime walks which is a bit worrying given how early in the year it is!

RampantIvy · 02/05/2025 07:20

Today's forecast is 7 degrees cooler than yesterday.

The hot weather haters can calm down now.
