I think most people get depressed in winter I am the opposite!! Don't get me wrong I do enjoy the hot weather BUT I feel like everyone is out living their best life's at the beach or in pubs with friends while I live out groundhog day.... Work, pick children up from school, dinner tidy up baths and beds..... That's my life and the sun just makes me so desperate for a social life! In reality I know everyone is probably doing the same old same old but in my head everyone's having fun in the sun except me! Tell me how unreasonable I am being lol

I think a summer version of SAD exists. The "I hate summer" threads on MN mention it frequently.

I get the winter version and simply don't get why people would prefer to sit under a blanket in the dark rather than enjoy a nice sunny and warm day.

I love being outdoors and pottering in my garden in nice weather. I feel more comfortable when wearing fewer clothes and don't have to get bundled up to feel warm.

Yes, some people do get it in summer, I think it’s mentioned on the NHS web page about SAD.

You don’t have to ‘get it’, just accept that some people suffer from it in summer, like you do in winter.

Thanks for this.
I did not appreciate someone tell me my real depression is not legitimate because you can only have SAD in the winter.

I feel more depressed in the summer than in the winter.
I just can’t tolerate any heat , but others don’t understand it!

Would a nice sunny summers day with mild temperature be ok? Is it just the heat that you dont like? Do you still like to see the sun come out if its cooler?

I had no idea the summer makes some people depressed so this has been a school day for me!

I’m the same, I’ve never liked heat. Anything over 20° and my mood changes.

I love autumn/winter and hate summer. Yesterday was 26° here and it was miserable, I'm counting the days until the days get shorter and nights get longer. There's nothing better than it starting to get dark by 4pm, getting home, door locked, blinds closed. Bliss!

Auburngal · 01/05/2025 08:00

I like this weather but these things annoy me
. Kids screaming. Please play WITHOUT screaming
. Someone near me smokes cannabis so the smell wafts through the open windows.
. Hay fever. It gets worse each year. I believe that councils reducing the number of times grass verges are mowed/cut back is making the weeds grow and when go to certain heights, flowers and seed pods develop. More pollen. The councils say it’s to help wildlife. Utter BS! Wildlife are not going to sleep on a verge of a busy A road. It’s a way of saving money.

Whattt?

This time of the year is the best. We've just had daffodil and blossom season, now there's bluebells in the woods, lambs boinging around in fields, ducklings on the rivers and canals, near constant beautiful birdsong and butterflies in the air, not to mention ever lighter evenings and being able to go outside without being dressed up in several layers.

I suppose if you live in a city centre it's easy to miss most of these things, but if you live more rurally, I have no idea why you'd prefer the misery of particularly late autumn and winter to this time of year!

Edited

I live in the country. I can hear various birds, cows and sheep as I type. I overlook trees and fields and I hate summer. Roll on October and dark nights and mornings which I love.

Auburngal · 01/05/2025 08:04

Also I won’t be able to enjoy the weather today as tomorrow morning, I am having a colonoscopy…….

Zanatdy · 01/05/2025 08:07

I hear you. When my children were young, I longed for the days when they were old enough to stay home alone so I could pop for a few drinks if I wanted to. Now they are older half the time I can’t be bothered! But I do often go out for food and catch up with friends. You can take the kids to the park / days out.

RampantIvy · 01/05/2025 08:21

Another reason I prefer bright days - it doesn't have to be warm, is that I am extremely short sighted and don't see very well in low light.

I hate driving on the dark as well.

I can't explain just how much bright weather lifts my mood.

Don’t spoilt it for others!

OP isn’t!

CiaoMeow · 01/05/2025 08:57

I don't like the heat of the day, but I love the evening and night time. The past few nights the fragrances of the soil, grass, plants and flowers have all combined together and it's gorgeous.

The other night, at around 10 pm, I popped out to the bin and ended up shutting the front door and going for a walk instead. It was lovely.

The brightness is a problem for me too but not as much as the heat. I don't like it being light out after about 7pm. It's disconcerting.

TweetingHurricane · 01/05/2025 09:02

in reality most people aren’t out doing the fun things but that’s what stands out.
I love all seasons, think we should appreciate things about each one otherwise we’ll be miserable for big parts of the year. My negatives of warmer weather is feeling like I’m cooking on the inside, the long light days and all the chavs coming out to play..

Yep, I hate the heat.
Happy with sunshine, I like the fact that the leaves are our on the trees, the swallows have arrived and the lanes are full of flowers and butterflies. I just wish it wasn't hot at the same time. Heat makes me quite ill.

I'd prefer all the above but chilly - cool enough so I could sleep at night and cold enough in the day so I can keep wearing my pullover. I prefer more clothes, not fewer, and sleep best under a snuggly blanket. Really quite happy driving in the dark and the odd amounts of ice and snow!

I cope with air conditioners and closed curtains, it keeps my apartment lovely and cool. Means when I go out (part-time work, shops and so forth) I can come back to a cold haven! I also have hefty air con in the car too....an absolute life saver.

BobnLen · 01/05/2025 09:08

I'm away in the caravan this week and it's very nice, I wouldn't have wanted it cold and wet

Pickled21 · 01/05/2025 09:10

Yabu but it's understandable. Just make some plans for the weekend. Whilst I've been working I've not been able to enjoy it either but I was off yesterday and for the rest of the week so we had a bbq yesterday. Today, I'll hang a wash out and have breakfast sat in the garden.

This is the thing, it’s the heat that spoils it.. it feels like spring doesn’t last long enough

BobnLen · 01/05/2025 09:14

I looked at the temperature in the house via Hive a few times and it's about 21-22c so not that hot

TheAmusedQuail · 01/05/2025 09:18

Does make me sad that I'm stuck indoors working for the lovely weather. I'll happily go out on my own.

Predicted 27 here today, that's too hot for me. Just about bearable if it s a dry heat but the second it gets muggy and it always does, I struggle.

Notafanoftheheat · 01/05/2025 09:38

From March I pine for September/October onwards. I'm a nicer person when the weather is cooler!

I'm northern Scotland so I guess the heat isnt so much of an issue up here 😊
