I was in blackout and parents haven’t even texted me

1000 replies

I live in one of the countries where there was a power cut, it was frightening at the time and still feels a bit unsettling. My parents haven’t even WhatsApped us to see how we are (they still live in the U.K.)

Is this normal?

It’s not normal.

Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours · 29/04/2025 23:08

Tbh the blackouts nearly passed me by and I'm a news junkie so it's very possible they've not realised a) that you were or affected or b) how badly

I'm in the UK and just had to Google, I knew nothing about it. Maybe your parents don't either?

I think you are being dramatic. It was an extended power cut.

TurnThatLightOn · 29/04/2025 23:11

Passed me by too and I keep abreast of the news. Can't explain why

Were you part of it?

How long was power off? I don't watch the news

UpJacksArseAndRoundTheCorner · 29/04/2025 23:12

If you have a good relationship with them then I'd say no, it's probably not normal.

If you don't, then it probably is.

On the other hand, you could've texted to say you were ok.

Outofthepan · 29/04/2025 23:13

Why would they need to worry about there being a power cut?

ScottBakula · 29/04/2025 23:13

I knew nothing about it until early evening.
Also they may think you need to conserve your phones battery power.

That said I presume you are a capable adult and don't need dps to check on you.

Dad constantly watches the news

It's really not been the top headline here. I only got a sense of how serious it was because of something I saw on twitter and because I read a detailed newspaper article which at the end mentioned people getting stuck on trains.

Nationwide power cut doesn't sound a big deal - until you get to the detail. Don't overestimate the coverage it's had here.

Or the fact your parents might have had their own shit going on.

Just talk to them.

titchy · 29/04/2025 23:14

It was a power cut not a tornado that wiped the whole area out. Confused

12 hours or more for some

It wasn't all over the British news...

Hayley1256 · 29/04/2025 23:16

I've not heard anything on the news today about blackouts - this is the first I've heard and I watched morning and evening news

HuffleMyPuffle · 29/04/2025 23:16

Anyway, they might not have wanted to risk your phone battery

Have you text them to say you're OK?

Outofthepan · 29/04/2025 23:16

HuffleMyPuffle · 29/04/2025 23:15

It wasn't all over the British news...

To be fair, it really was.

But no indication of threat to life

WinterMorn · 29/04/2025 23:16

If you felt that strongly about it, why didn’t you message them?!

HuffleMyPuffle · 29/04/2025 23:17

Outofthepan · 29/04/2025 23:16

Not all over the British news I've seen. And evidently the same for many other posters

Fiery30 · 29/04/2025 23:18

Did you inform them about it? I haven't read any breaking news about a powercut. Just because your father watches the news, doesn't mean he is fully updated on what's happening in every part of the world. Sometime people watch/listen to specific news items such as Trump's policy or sports.

BlondiePortz · 29/04/2025 23:18

You no power what on earth are people to message you about? lots of the world live with no power

Blackdow · 29/04/2025 23:18

I’m in Scotland and we had several power outages over winter. The longest was for around 37 hours. I really don’t see what the big deal is. People weren’t checking in on me. You had a power cut. They happen here every winter.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 29/04/2025 23:19

What if they did text you and, because of the blackout, you just didn’t receive it?
