That’s nowhere near the biggest species of beetle native to the UK. Stag beetles are double that size.

As others have said - it’s a cockchafer and like all British beetles, totally harmless and nothing to worry about.

Google says forest cockchafer.

you can google search photos to look up things.

Lovejonathanpie · 30/04/2025 19:33

When I told my husband we had a cockchafer in the bedroom the previous night he said he’d be wearing pyjama trousers in future.

Cnidarian · 30/04/2025 19:36

It's May....the yearly requests of what the hell is this have begun from friends to the insect weirdos (me, I am the insect weirdo). The answer is always Cockchafer!

T1Dmama · 30/04/2025 19:47

We had one fly in the house the other night because DD left back door open and lights on…. I was sat on the toilet and she started screaming and legged it upstairs, still screaming…. I’ve never exited the bathroom so quickly!! I turned off all the lights and turned the outside one off and assumed it had taken itself back out… found it the next day on the floor in lounge half dead…. Poor thing!

And you're asking here - instead of looking for a garden forum or an entomology expert?

Why not?

she had her answer in under a minute, it would've taken longer than that to find another forum.

LTB*!!!!!

*Beetle

PrincessSakura · 30/04/2025 19:58

It is a cockchafer or May bug, they are incredibly cute and clumsy, they only stick around for a short while as they spend most of their time underground.
who could be frightened of this lil cutie!?

If you google May bug they have the cutest faces 🥰 🪲

Evan456 · 30/04/2025 20:05

🙄

LittleGem87 · 30/04/2025 20:06

May bugs, cockchafers, glorious beings!

almostbloody50 · 30/04/2025 20:07

A May bug

Goldenmurkin72 · 30/04/2025 20:13

It's a Cockchafer, perfectly harmless, but bloody massive!

NaeRolls · 30/04/2025 20:16

Looks safe to me. Unless you're living in Australia, in which case it probably contains the venom of a thousand cobras.

dEdiCatEdFeliNeEntHusiAst · 30/04/2025 20:18

It can't be a May Bug ! It's still April 🙄 🙄sorry

Weedresistantmembrane · 30/04/2025 20:30

Dh met one today.
He was on the toilet (on company time) and one fell out of his shirt.
He messaged me to tell me that the biggest beetle in the world had crawled up his clothes and I knew immediately what it would be.

We I was little my Dad used to bring home logs, railway sleepers, old wood etc for our fire and store them in the garage before bringing a pile into the lounge to last a few days, stacking next to the hearth.
My Mum had hysterics one night describing this HUGE beetle like animal with horns that had run across the room !!!
The interweb hadnt been invented so as the 'visitor' was never found we all thought Mum had been hallucinating. Until many years later I discovered (thanks TimBL) that it was indeed true & she'd probably seen a Stag Beetle 🪲

inigomontoyahwillcox · 30/04/2025 20:32

This reminds me of the time a woman on our local mummies facebook was loosing her shit about some weird animal in her garden - it was a mole

TheDevilFindsWorkForIdleMums · 30/04/2025 20:33

It's a cockchafer and it's harmless.

Stravaig · 30/04/2025 20:42

Pretty!

Superhansrantowindsor · 30/04/2025 20:47

May bugs. Grew up on the south coast where we got hundreds of them every May. Never see them where I live now.

Concretejungle1 · 30/04/2025 20:49

That is no cockroach
have you never seen a beetle?😶
