It's a shield bug, perfectly harmless 😁

CommonAsMucklowe · 30/04/2025 18:09

Cockchafer, when they decide to knock on your windows at night you'll think it's a bird trying to get in!

MzHz · 30/04/2025 18:11

May bug. Or cockchafer

Namechangetheyarewatching · 29/04/2025 20:56

Omg it's a beatle! Stand down, we don't have dangerous things really

John, Paul, Ringo or George?

BeakyFlinders · 30/04/2025 18:13

It’s a may bug. Huge but harmless. When I was a teenager one flew into my long hair and got tangled. Wish I could say I removed it calmly and carried on with my day but that would be a lie 😂

It's what is known as Scotland as a " beastie". This term covers every living creature and is universally understood. If you want to be fancy you can use " wee beastie" for anything from an ant to a hedgehog, or " big beastie" for anything from.a dog to an elephant.
A" fucking humongous beastie" is usually a spider.

This is my favourite post of the day.

It’s a Chafer, probably a Cockchafer but there are various types. Harmless and beautiful.

Christwosheds · 30/04/2025 18:22

Also known as May bugs, as they tend to all hatch on one evening in early Summer .

MyDeftDuck · 30/04/2025 18:28

Looks like a May Bug which,I think, are the beetles that hatch from chafer grubs. These live in the lawn and destroy the roots of the grass - we are overrun with the little bastards!

This is my favourite post of the day.

Ha, I moved from England to Scotland and was confused by the wee beasties 🤣

DeedsNotDiddums · 30/04/2025 18:42

It's just a beetle! Go to r/beetles on Reddit and ask if you want the species.

southerngirl10 · 30/04/2025 18:46

A word of advice. Never go to Australia😂

TheHerboriste · 30/04/2025 18:48

Good lord, it's an ordinary beetle. Leave the wildlife alone.

ronswansonstache · 30/04/2025 18:50

Midlifehereicome · 29/04/2025 21:36

It's called a billy witch round our way.

Are from East Anglia? I have read most of the thread expecting it to be identified as a Billywitch, but now I’m wondering if that name is very regional!

ohmyfootreallyhurts · 30/04/2025 18:56

ScrewedByFunding · 29/04/2025 21:00

It's a may bug. Noisy fliers and they die in about 24 hours.

Not a May bug. Looks nothing like it.

Hoppinggreen · 30/04/2025 18:56

Cute

Elzibub · 30/04/2025 19:01

It looks like a May bug

Well I'm assuming it isn't John or George so maybe Ringo or Paul?

Stillatitlikerabbits · 30/04/2025 19:05

About 45 years ago I lived in Clapham and was walking across Clapham Common one warm evening in early May when there was a mass hatch of cockchafers like you wouldn't believe, thousands of them taking flight at once. This was closely followed by panicky screams from all the other walkers on the common who clearly thought they were under attack from aliens or the deadly Blood Sucking Big Buzzing Hair Ripping Beetle. I was studying zoology at uni at the time and thought this was the most wonderful thing I had ever seen, but I was definitely in the minority.

Helppooo · 29/04/2025 20:55

what on earth is this? Is it dangerous?

Melolontha, is the scientific name - Maybug, Cockchafer, Beetle. Scarabaeidae family.

LeroyJenkinssss · 30/04/2025 19:18

Nope. Sorry it’s too big. I hate flying buzzing things and for completely irrational reasons they scare me. I did have one outside my front door last night, thought it was a hornet, was only mildly reassured that it was a ginormous face eating beetle

TheHappyHippy · 30/04/2025 19:19

It's a cockchafer, also known as mesmedorme and dumbledore.i don't like them much, great big, clumsy, noisy things. It's out a bit early, usually appear mid-May to end of June. Entirely harmless, but they make me shriek and run.

ItGhoul · 30/04/2025 19:21

Why on earth would it be dangerous? It’s a beetle, not a werewolf.

Kittycatkin · 30/04/2025 19:22

I think it’s a stag beetle, they live in rotting wood, not dangerous and a protected species. I have them in my garden, they sometimes fall on their back and can’t
turn onto their front so I always help them.

bagpuss90 · 30/04/2025 19:23

Ffs it’s a May bug 🙄
