I also hear them called billywitches in Suffolk

GreyRockChick · 29/04/2025 22:52

May bug! 2 days early to the party! Harmless but massive and very noisy/scary when you encounter one

Firefly1987 · 29/04/2025 22:59

Coincidently summat is crashing into my kitchen door right now-it'll either be one of these things or a hornet!

pinkstripeycat · 29/04/2025 23:12

We used to call them June bugs. They are loud and buzzy, clueless and clumsy and dive bomb you. They are very gentle, bumbling beetles.

Google: In the UK, "June bug" is most commonly referred to as a cockchafer (Melolontha melolontha)

TheodoraCrumpet · 29/04/2025 23:16

Leave it be. It won't hurt you. I take a great deal of juvenile glee in talking about cockchafers.

katkintreats · 29/04/2025 23:17

What a beautiful beetle 😍 I hope you were kind to him OP

PerfectlyNormalOwlFreeMorning · 29/04/2025 23:32

Those saying June Bugs, are you northerly?

johnd2 · 29/04/2025 23:59

It's the little bright red ones you have to watch out for on your lilies at this time of year, they will chomp through the lot in a day or two.
Not to mention those gooseberry bush caterpillars that also chomp the lot later in the year.

gotmyknickersinatwist · 30/04/2025 00:02

Doodlebugs are so lovely 😍

SnowFrogJelly · 30/04/2025 01:08

Yip it turned out to be one of these! I'm fighting the urge to pick it up, but I don't think I dare.

We had exactly the same issue last night, luckily ours was also a cockchafer and not a hornet, the dog was going nuts!

Firefly1987 · 30/04/2025 17:02

@YoureMyWifeNowDave I bet! They are so loud against the door. It kept trying to climb up and then falling over and getting stuck on it's back 😆I managed to put it in a box and take a pic but it hasn't uploaded for some reason.

Cockchafer

Helppooo · 29/04/2025 20:56

@Marmaladelade its huge? Is it a cockroach?!

Don't think its a roach. I've seen these before in my garden but don't know what they are.

SpeedyBulletTrain · 30/04/2025 17:52

Cockchafer?

PleaseStopEatingMyStuff · 30/04/2025 17:54

Awww a beautiful May bug.
Please be kind to him & leave him be.

Absolutely not a cockroach. I live in a country where they are common. It's a beetle, not a cockroach.

PickAChew · 30/04/2025 17:54

It's only dangerous if you're a cock.

Agree. I'm not sure it's a june bug either.

Ilovemyshed · 30/04/2025 18:00

Cockchafer, also known as Maybugs. Not harmless, their larvae before they turn to beetles live in the soil and are huge creamy white things and eat roots of grass and stuff.

Horrid when the beetles fly and accidentally bump into you though!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/04/2025 18:01

Oooh, I wonder if it's going to be one of their big years?

I used to live somewhere with a huge old cherry blossom tree and one year, there were so many of them doing their mating flight (and the males look amazing with their yellow feathery antennae, by the way), it sounded as though we were under bombardment as they all pinged off the windows that night.

Ilovemyshed · 30/04/2025 18:01

Should have said not Harmful!

BestDIL · 30/04/2025 18:02

It’s a cockchafer. Totally harmless. Only live for 2-3 days and very dim when flying!!
