Offended by friend’s comments about party food

We hosted my friend, her husband and three kids yesterday afternoon. Our sons are in the same football team and we said we’d put some food on at ours after and watch the Liverpool match who they both support. My friend agreed to party style food being the best option as everyone could pick at it as and when.

Amongst other things, there was - Indian selection, tempura prawns, sausage rolls, mini pizza’s, mini sausages, chips, breaded chicken. So a good mix all from Iceland where we’ve had positive comments on the food before.

I could tell my friends’ youngest looked unimpressed when they tried one of the items, and pulled a face to my friend. She made no
attempt to get them to try another item and basically said ‘I know’. I noticed five minutes later she had barely ate anything herself either.

15/20 minutes later, the youngest moaned again and this time my friend said ‘don’t worry, we will stop at McDonald’s on the way back as I’m hungry too.’

I text her after they left to say sorry if they didn’t enjoy the food. She replied to say they didn’t realise it would be that sort of food and that they’d have got something else before coming round if they realised!!

AIBU to find this really snobby and ungrateful? The fact she then took the kids to get a McDonald’s makes no sense!!

So as part of the buffet there were chips and chicken nuggets. Both of which they sell at McDonald’s. I get it if she doesn’t like Indian food maybe but there was stuff she and her child could eat if they were going to McDonald’s. She was being rude for the sake of it

Horses7 · 28/04/2025 21:14

Rude!

Timetoheal4good · 28/04/2025 21:15

It's not the turning your nose up at Iceland but going via McDonald's that is the pinnacle of hypocrisy here.

It's thinking you're too good for Iceland but not too good for having basic manners and raising your children with some of the same.

If you expect caviar on crackers then at least have the social fucking etiquette to go with it!!

And I enjoy beige party food, one of the best bits of party season. Also ... I've never attended a gathering to watch any sport and been served fruit and veg. Sometimes it really is ok to just go with party food/fast food.

KindLemur · 28/04/2025 21:09

You don’t ’watch sport’ ??

not even the boat race with some organic strawberries for Jacinta and Araminta?!!

Edited

Can’t be bothered with organic food mostly, don’t think I’ve ever seen an organic strawberry in any supermarket I’ve been in. So you can take your reverse snobbery and shove it.

Nope, didn’t watch the boat race. Might watch a bit of the olympics but haven’t watched a team sport in forever. Just not interested.

JoyousEagle · 28/04/2025 21:18

She was unhappy with sausage rolls, mini pizza, chips and breaded chicken, so went to macdonalds instead? I don’t really know what food she was expecting? If she was expecting healthier stuff, she wouldn’t have substituted with macdonalds, and if her children don’t like that sort of food, again I’m surprised they like macdonalds (and if they’re so fussy that only macdonalds chips will do, and not oven chips, then I don’t know what you could have served them that would have been deemed acceptable).

Trovindia · 28/04/2025 21:18

Honestly I would expect something fresh on there, some fruit and salad veg, but it was ok and I would just give the kids something healthy at home to make up for the lack on the buffet. They would eat pizza and chicken and sausages, not the rest of it though. I wouldn't allow them to be rude about food provided for them by a host.

Potsofpetals · 28/04/2025 21:19

I was going to agree with them but they lost me at McDonald’s.

I always do some fresh french stick, cheese, pate, prawns. Lots of veggies meats and salad.

Fresh fruit salad, ice cream and cream.

It doesn’t take an eternity to make and always goes down a treat

ZenNudist · 28/04/2025 21:19

Maybe they were just fussy. "Party food" must have meant something different to them.

soupyspoon · 28/04/2025 21:20

Love the way samosas and tempura prawns are slagged off as boring beige food. Tell that to whole continents.

PricklyLikeCactus · 28/04/2025 21:20

Please do ask her what she was expecting, just for our entertainment. Am dying to know! I think it wasn’t bland enough for her and your prawns and Indian spices were too wildly experimental and out there.

AliBaliBee1234 · 28/04/2025 21:20

Not sure why everyone is commenting on whether or not they'd like the food. Regardless they were extremely rude and ungrateful!

pizzaHeart · 28/04/2025 21:21

She was very very rude. It didnt matter what she was expecting - her behaviour was very rude.
However just out of fairness - your food was absolutely fine for family party food : there were chips, mini pizzas and mini sausages.
What did she expect? I don’t think it was about lack of broccoli or guacamole judging by her McDonalds comments.

Apparently you don’t eat fruit if you’re watching football, I’ve learnt on this thread.

Every day’s a school day.

Sounds lovely but not really what party food usually is

amele · 28/04/2025 21:22

She was rude, I wouldn’t have said anything to you but I would be unimpressed and defo grab food before going home. I hate frozen picky bits, eating it occasionally in ur own home as a snack can sometimes taste ok, but it’s not something I would enjoy as party food. If I was putting out picky bits/party food, most of the items if not all I would make it myself, it wouldn’t be frozen things.

MasterBeth · 28/04/2025 21:24

IMustDoMoreExercise · 28/04/2025 20:52

I wouldn't like that sort of food either.

If someone said party food to me I would expect sandwiches and cheese and pineapple and things like that not stuff from Iceland.

But then I also haven't been to McDonald's for over 30 years so I'm surprised that she was going there if she turned her nose up at your food.

They didn't say "party food from the 1970s".

noworklifebalance · 28/04/2025 21:24

It don’t think it’s fair to comment on whether you would like Iceland food or not - we don’t know OP’s budget or circumstances. She was kind enough to host and put on food for her guests. They, in turn, were very rude and going to McDonald’s doesn’t suggest the issue was the lack of fruit, crudités or posh nibbles.

CremeEggThief · 28/04/2025 21:25

DenholmElliot11 · 28/04/2025 20:57

Yes this. It's hardly special, certainly not what I'd use to host with as I'd want to shine as a hostess.

Why would you want to "shine as a hostess" at a little get-together on a Sunday afternoon with the kids to watch a football match??😆

I would have loved the (vegetarian) elements of the party food, OP. They were rude and please don't invite them over again.

Silsatrip · 28/04/2025 21:26

Really rude. You had a wide mix...even fussy kids usually eat chips or something. It was finger food while watching a match.

I've never seen sandwiches at a party...I would think I was at a funeral if there were plates of sandwiches

JackJarvisEsq · 28/04/2025 21:26

Unless you’re serving culturally/religiously prohibited or an allergen then the guests smile, nod and have a nibble

if it’s not their taste they get something on the way home and thank their host

Goldengirl123 · 28/04/2025 21:26

It was very rude if her but the food does sound grim

Waitingforspring77 · 28/04/2025 21:27

Very rude of her and her offspring but the again you can't blame the kid for the lack of manners as the mother clearly has zero. If my DC had made a face at someone's food which they'd gone to the trouble to prepare they'd get a serious talking to!!! Really ungrateful. Sounds a lovely buffet OP, I'd have loved it!
Don't invite them again!

bittertwisted · 28/04/2025 21:28

My kids couldn’t have given a shit about the food. Liverpool won the league, one of the happiest days of their lives. It was a party

Crazy isn't it? Mine would expect what they get as standard in my house: apple, cucumber, pepper, blueberries, strawberries, grapes, satsumas. That's what I always add to their lunches every day, they actually don't consider it lunch if it's just a sandwich lol. They ask for the fruit and veg.

Fuck me, it wasn't Come Dine With Me, I doubt the OP was intending to 'shine as a hostess'. No doubt the rude arseholes would have turned their noses up after that too.

Too good for Iceland, but love a bit of McDonalds 🤣
