Offended by friend’s comments about party food

We hosted my friend, her husband and three kids yesterday afternoon. Our sons are in the same football team and we said we’d put some food on at ours after and watch the Liverpool match who they both support. My friend agreed to party style food being the best option as everyone could pick at it as and when.

Amongst other things, there was - Indian selection, tempura prawns, sausage rolls, mini pizza’s, mini sausages, chips, breaded chicken. So a good mix all from Iceland where we’ve had positive comments on the food before.

I could tell my friends’ youngest looked unimpressed when they tried one of the items, and pulled a face to my friend. She made no
attempt to get them to try another item and basically said ‘I know’. I noticed five minutes later she had barely ate anything herself either.

15/20 minutes later, the youngest moaned again and this time my friend said ‘don’t worry, we will stop at McDonald’s on the way back as I’m hungry too.’

I text her after they left to say sorry if they didn’t enjoy the food. She replied to say they didn’t realise it would be that sort of food and that they’d have got something else before coming round if they realised!!

AIBU to find this really snobby and ungrateful? The fact she then took the kids to get a McDonald’s makes no sense!!

She might have expected bread, ham, cheese, carrot sticks, crisps and sausage roll type party food.

Perhaps but OP said there were sausage rolls and chips and it’s strange that a family that goes to McDonald’s wouldn’t like mini pizzas at least. Maybe it was too high-end for them.

They were rude......but I wouldn't want Iceland party food either.

Neither would I , but I wouldn't make any comments about it. I'd just eat at least some of it.

Well you’ll be pleased to know I saw my friend on the school run! And she actually said sorry that her youngest didn’t eat anything (didn’t mention her mcd’s comment). She said she thinks this was because it was frozen food rather than ‘cooked from fresh’ which she thought it would be (she doesn’t mean me cooking from scratch, just the same type of food but not frozen).

I asked whether she had any recommendations for future and plenty of you guessed it….apparently M&S is where she’d go! And that they do 4 for 3 which ‘she’d usually get a few lots of’. We had that stuff at Christmas and it wasn’t cheap and to be honest not really worth the money IMO, plus we’d have needed probably 10+ items to have catered for everyone on Sunday!

Frantically typed this sat in my car before work, I look forward to reading back on lunch 😂

Good grief, how about Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury’s et al? Would she eat anything from them? Next time put out a selection from Aldi and say it’s from Waitrose. Or part of the hamper you got from Fortnum & Mason.

There's nothing more to be said really other than they were very rude.

Reddoorredhandle · 29/04/2025 18:35

I love Iceland party food! Next time invite me please! Although Unfortunatly not a fan of football 😂, but willing to participate for the food.

If it's good enough for Kerry Katona it should be good enough for everyone.

Why. is she a beacon of sophistication? 😂😂😂

ProfessionalOverthinker1 · 28/04/2025 22:31

To all saying "I wouldn't want Iceland food either"

If I put in front of you mini sausage rolls from various supermarkets I highly doubt you'd be able to tell which one was from Iceland.

Op - maybe food was very cold inside? That would put me off even if it was the finest food under the sun, I like room temperature for this kind of spread. Maybe it was texture, since it was defrosted?

Regardless, extremely rude of the other mum to make comments out like even if she thought that. Honestly, some people are just rude pricks.

I think I would. I’m no snob, I rarely go to the likes of Waitrose or Sainsbury’s, and have no issue with a beige buffet but I avoid anything Iceland own brand because having given it a fair chance a few times I find it’s tasteless and usually mushy. The stuff they sell by Harry Ramsden, Greggs, TGIF etc is decent enough but not their own branded stuff.

I sympathise with the friend because I’ve found myself (quietly) saying to my daughter not to worry if she can’t eat anything, we’ll go to McDonald’s on the way home. We do that because it is quick, not because we think the food is better. Given the choice she will avoid McDonalds if there is an alternative so it really is the last option for us. This has even happened of we’ve had dinner at my parents and it isn’t something she would eat. Sometimes I don’t like the things my parents have cooked either. Not because it is bad, but because my dad likes to experiment with cooking and it doesn’t always go so well, but we have to pretend it’s yummy.

IwasDueANameChange · 29/04/2025 06:52

Along my mates people would actually cook/prepare fresh food, it would not be the norm to host & offer up trays of oven baked beige.

It would be:

  • charcuterie/cheese/fresh bread, lots of salad, fruit etc
  • freshly cooked barbecued meat, side dishes
  • freshly cooked good quality pizzas for children
  • pulled pork rolls and salad
-Veg sticks & hummus definitely

There would always be fresh veg/salad/fruit and sides made from scratch etc

Aren't you perfect 🙄

Dawnb19 · 29/04/2025 18:55

Iceland do some really nice party food, some are even nicer than m&s. Imagine turning down Iceland food but eating McDonald's crap. 🤷 Although I'd probably have made a few different sandwiches as well.

pambeesleyhalpert · 29/04/2025 18:57

CF she can host next time. Look forward to the champagne and M&S buffet

Actually Iceland products are good quality, comparable with many supermarket frozen foods. I was surprised hiw nice they were when I tried some.

Fruit! While watching the footy
Fucking hell 😂 😂 😂

Maybe if they had a cheese 🧀 board you'd provide grapes 🍇 apple 🍎 or pear 🍐

HellDorado · 29/04/2025 19:08

It's completely irrelevant what you would have hosted with or if you would have liked that food-you don't turn up to someone's home where they're graciously serving you food that they bought out of their own pocket and turn your nose up at it.

There is such a thing as shining as a guest, too, you know.

Exactly. Any issues were actually entirely of the guest’s making.

Had the guest said in advance, “Johnny’s quite a picky eater - I’ll bring a couple of things I know he’ll definitely eat, if that’s okay?”, I’m sure the OP would have been fine with it. Even if she hadn’t thought to do that, once she realised the food wasn’t going to be suitable, all she had to do was say “Sorry, he can be very picky - I should have thought to bring something. I’ll feed him again later if he’s still hungry.”

But no. She not only went out of her way to make it clear that she also thought the food was a pile of crap, but also did her best to make OP feel bad about it by texting afterwards to say that she’d have eaten before if she’d known, AND then recommended OP upped the budget in future. She’s an absolute piece of work.

Lorrainedrops · 29/04/2025 19:10

I think your friends were very rude You went shopping. purchased all the food and hosted the the night. When it comes to food, you could go on and on. You could purchase lots of food that may end up being wasted. You can't cater to everyone's needs. They should've been grateful for your hospitality.

GrandmaJowa · 29/04/2025 19:23

I'd be more than happy to be served Iceland party foods.

Brokeandold · 29/04/2025 19:31

Shes soo rude, wheres her manners?!
She wasn't raised right! Fake snob
Fancy telling you all about M&S party food but going to Macdonalds, you have to laugh at people sometimes!
I love Iceland party food, your spread sounds perfect.
I have bought M&S party food for Christmas on and off , the last couple of years it’s been a dire selection, mainly fish based , soo expensive too. And they didnt restock on Christmas eve, I went in to collect my food to order and it was almost empty, madness! -I’m deviating slightly
Think we’ll do Iceland food for Christmas, sounds ace.

Absolutely.

It wasn’t just that she and her child turned their noses up and didn’t try to hide that, she seems also to have almost admonished op for daring to serve it.

She sounds horrific.

So there was all the beige food you could find. I do think she was rude but I also think you could have put a bit more effort in if you had specifically invited them. There was nothing at all unprocessed, fresh, healthy or colourful. I'd have been very dissatisfied with that offering but woukd have kept my thoughts to myself. Carrot, Cucumber and Pepper sticks with dips. Chicken drumsticks. Cheese and crackers with chutney. Salad and coleslaw, potato salad. None of this is difficult and is much nicer that cheap frozen boxed stuff.

Carrot and cucumber sticks are definitely not nicer than sausage rolls 😂

PoppyRoseBucky · 29/04/2025 19:47

@IwasDueANameChange God, you sound insufferable.

They were watching football. They're not going on Come Dine With Me, are they?

The rude woman was told, multiple times, that it was going to be party food and she said that was fine. Her only objection seemed to be where the food was purchased from.

I swear some people come on here just to flaunt how snobby they are and how superior they think they are to everyone else. If you're watching sports, and it's meant to just be a chill night, there's no need to act like you're serving up a slap-up meal at a Michelin star restaurant, ok?

Fine if you want to do that, but most normal people (who aren't involved in some imaginary cooking contest in their heads) would be quite happy to watch sports with normal party food to pick at.

Emmz1510 · 29/04/2025 19:59

Sounds fine to me. Ignore the snobs on here. For watching a footie match with a bunch of kids this sounds perfect and Iceland party food is fine and this is what I would think of if someone said party food, especially with kids. She was exceptionally rude.

Praying4Peace · 29/04/2025 20:05

Pretentious twat! Might not have been to her taste but how dare she clearly put you down and so obviously. Like they say, no good deed goes unpunished .I would have to say something...

omg I know, she can’t be genuinely saying that surely?! I wouldn’t have known what half those things were when I was a kid!
