You are given the power to make three things illegal. What would you choose?

I know people will post silly things that irritate them but think seriously. What three things would you make completely illegal right now?
Here's mine:

  1. The right to buy your council house
  2. Owning more than one property.
  3. Not keeping your cat contained in your own home. With hefty fines if it is caught killing any wildlife.

Cats are designed for the outdoors. Seems more cruel to keep them locked in - and that's coming from someone who started having cats kept indoors! They are happier in their natural habitat.

So are chickens. They hate being kept cooped up. But it’s what I had to do with mine because the neighbours’ Maine coons (which arrived after the hens) wouldn’t stop harassing them. I also was really not a fan of having to clean other people’s cat crap out of my garden when I was pregnant.

cornflakecrunchie · 13/05/2025 18:13

Enough with the cat hate.. it's really boring.

HeyThereDelila · 13/05/2025 18:16

I’d make the following illegal:

  1. surrogacy
  2. egg “donation”
  3. men in women’s single sex spaces

@SpringSunshineanddaffodils You must be such fun at parties.. seriously, give it a rest.

JulyJourney · 13/05/2025 19:42

@cornflakecrunchie I think that as @SpringSunshineanddaffodils started this thread it's technically her party.
People in real life get awfully annoyed if you make negative comments about the ecological impact of domestic cats so it's been nice to interact with people that hold the same view as me.
A generation ago people would have thought you were nuts if you complained about rhododendrons, but they have destroyed the national park in Kerry.

It's not "awful" don't be so soft.

Noone's talking about killing or maiming cats. We just want owners to take responsibility for the damage they do.

I think it’s absolutely awful to suggest making it illegal for cats to go outside.

I am not a big fan of cats but until
now I didn’t even know actual cat hate was a thing.

Masonlass · 14/05/2025 23:36

But you are invoking it with your comments
just to remind you cats are legally considered wild animals so no one is responsible for their actions. Sorry but it’s the law so accept it.
I actually think you need help with your worryingly detest of a defenceless animal. Your “passion” has now moved into a worrying stage. To the degree I am concerned you mean them harm. Egyptians worshipped them are you saying a whole nation was wrong?
sadly from your comments I feel it’s a case of ‘my way or the highway’ .

CarlyCrisp · 14/05/2025 23:48
  1. No more male heads of state/political leaders for 10 years, just so we can sort things out a bit.
  2. No more royal family
  3. More suitable, unused ground to be used to grow free food for community distribution

I haven't actually commented that much about it. Other posters have agreed with me and written more, perhaps you are lumping us together.
And I've actually expressed concern for the cats twice, if you check my comment history. I have said its dangerous for them as they get into fights and accidents and that indoor cats live longer. I have also asked another poster why she continues to let her cat out even though it's bad for its health.
But people are just seeing me as some deranged cat hater and ignoring what are actually perfectly valid points, which other countries have taken action on.
And I am perfectly entitled to challenge and disagree with the law.

  1. Smart phones for under 18s
  2. Hitting or any violence towards kids
  3. People being mean to my kids (yes, I want it enshrined in law that my kids must never be bullied, picked on, teased or left out and also that they have a right to instant access to adequate healthcare!!)
Masonlass · 15/05/2025 14:20

Well as a life long cat owner with all my cats living until very late teens/twenties and all of whom were allowed to go out.
I think, having done my own research that appears to put cats in 2 categories; those that live your predominantly live outside and will disappear for days on end and those that live
indoors.
They haven’t considered what we could call Hybrid cats, those that come home every day, sleep at home during the day and come and go as they please but always come back to eat and sleep etc. They live until late teens/20,s
The stimulation they receive by going out helps their brain, bodies and wellbeing
it’s obvious you know little about cats

I agree with 1. and 3. but some of the freeest, fairest and happiest countries on earth have Royal Families (eg Holland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark) and most of the despotic (eg North Kore, China) are “people’s republics”.

I’d replace number 2 with “being a paedophile”.

Anyone arrested for any sex offence is given a psychometric test for paediphilia. If you fail- lethal injection!

Noone is saying they shouldn't go outside, just keep them contained on your own land. Australia has already started putting lots of rules in place such as cat curfews or keeping them contained entirely, and they also require all cats to be microchipped, like dogs are. It's not about cat hate, it's about protecting wildlife and encouraging responsible pet ownership.
I think even just the idea of a cat curfew would be better than what we currently have in the UK which is just free roaming. Wildlife is most vulnerable at dawn and dusk so only letting cats out during daylight hours would at least help a bit.

But honestly, the way people are reacting on here, you'd think we were suggesting they all be rounded up and shot 🙄

Yes I don’t agree with this at all. Cat’s are wanderers/ explorers by instinct. It is cruel. And unnecessary .

That's fine that you don't agree, however you might be interested to know that the cat's protection league have said "As long as your cat has the space and resources to express all of their natural behaviours and isn’t frustrated when they can’t go outside, there’s no reason they can’t live a perfectly happy life as a house cat."
It goes on to say that adult cats that have been outside may find it difficult to adjust, but I can't see why we can't, in time, get to a point where it's as normal for cats to be indoors as it is for dogs to be, and for this to be perfectly fine for cats' welfare.

It does take a more time and effort for the owners to provide an enriching life for an indoor cat, but it is my belief that this is a pet owner's responsibility and that legislation should be brought in to enforce this, so that we can limit the damage cats are doing to property and wildlife and to keep the cats themselves safer.

I get that I'm in the minority in the UK but I stand firm in this belief, the OP clearly agrees with me, and so do other governments in developed nations the world over.

Here are my three, I’ve taken the liberty of suggesting a punishment too.

Moaning about dogs - scold’s bridal
Dropping litter - made to go and work on the rubbish tips (wherever they used to show clips of this on comic relief) looking for stuff to sell to survive. We could share their worldly goods with the people who have to work there so it helps those people too.
People who block junctions in traffic jams - cars should be removed and they should be banned from driving

Misspelling bridle - public shaming!! 😅

legislation to enforce restriction or cruelty to animals 🤮

“as long as your isn’t frustrated when they can’t go outside, there’s no reason they can’t live a perfectly happy life as a house cat." Is obviously a completely circular statement. Yes as long as they are happy, they are happy. But a lot of cats are obviously not happy not being able to express their instincts to wander and explore. It does to some extent depend on the cat- like humans they have different personalities of course.

Yes, but as I said, I believe that it is the owner's responsibility to provide a stimulating enough environment within the confines of their own property.

You could argue that dogs also have a natural instinct to explore, they certainly love new environments, to sniff, chase, play, check out new things. (In fact, you could argue the same for a lot of domesticated animals that it's normal to keep confined, rabbits, guinea pigs, parrots, budgies, lizards, hamsters, fish etc) But dogs' right to roam was ended long ago, for the safety of dogs and people. Dog owners now need to walk their dogs under supervision and provide all their entertainment and care.

It's high time, in my opinion, that this was made the same for cats and that owners were made to take full responsibility. They cause a lot of damage, they're a menace to the natural balance of an evolved ecosystem, and they're not safe out there.

It's simply cultural norms that make people take such objection to it, and an unwillingness to face the fact that the current societal norm just isn't responsible. Same reason people don't recycle or cut down their use of single use plastic even though they know they should.

Sigh. It seems you're determined to bore everyone to tears.
Can you not sign up for something to take your mind off these devil cats?
