I know people will post silly things that irritate them but think seriously. What three things would you make completely illegal right now?
Here's mine:

  1. The right to buy your council house
  2. Owning more than one property.
  3. Not keeping your cat contained in your own home. With hefty fines if it is caught killing any wildlife.

I'd also ban outdoor cats, it would have a huge positive impact on city wildlife.

I'd make whoever produces packaging responsible for it's safe carbon neutral disposal to get rid of all but the most essential single use plastic packaging.

I'd also ban surveillance capitalism as a mechanism for funding social media and online games.

Inspired by another poster -

Current parenting laws - both parents have to be DNA tested at child’s birth and bio parents on birth certificate. Everyone has a mother and father and should be legal obligation to ensure record is accurate for child.

Mandated parenting courses - and relationship courses.

Compulsory financial education in schools

Source?
Time period?

This is from a quick Google but there was an article in Nature journal if you want to research further.

Bloody supercilious cyclists who think they own the whole of the road.

JohnTheRevelator · 27/04/2025 22:39
  1. Playing music/watching videos on your phone (or any device) in public without headphones.
  2. Spitting in the street.
  3. Parents letting their kids behave like little shits in public.

I’m allergic to them.

That’s fair enough, must be a strong allergy to be affected by being near one/ walking past one

StarDolphins · 27/04/2025 22:48
  1. to own any pet unless you can pass a series of strict tests that prove you take full responsibility for the pets whole life, can afford it and will treat it like a family member
  2. social media banned for under 18’s - dummy phones for calls only
  3. cars have to to be speed restricted and will only start if the driver has had a drink/drug test on each journey

So young people can't rent privately as there are no second homes allowed. And council renters can't buy their own home. How is anyone supposed to get on the housing ladder? 🤔

ToffeePennie · 27/04/2025 22:56
  1. smoking
  2. drinking alcohol
  3. dogs (not disability dogs that are actually doing a job) being treated like humans and allowed into shops/restaurants etc
and if I can have a fourth - morons who do Tech for stage shows with NO clue about what they actually are Supposed to do, get in the way of cast and other crew, tread on toes and drop stage furniture all over the place, as well as not having the right stuff in the right place! But that one’s pretty specific.

  1. plastic packaging
  2. any exploitation of animals
  3. Vapes
Swonderful · 27/04/2025 23:03

My 3 -

  • Recycled cardboard parcel packaging that nothing will stick to
  • Burgers where there's so much sauce it drips into your hands
  • "See it, say it, sorted" on the train!

Caravans being towed
Long straggly beards.
Not picking up dog poo.

  1. Owning a dangerous breed of dog. No exception they get PTS.
  2. Taking drugs, drinking alcohol or smoking whilst pregnant. FAS can give the baby a severe learning disability for life.
  3. Schools allow students to sit any exams they want to. Fines for Headteacher who prevent this.

Eating meat/fish

Shooting/hunting/fishing

Felling mature trees without H&S reason

Playing loud music in your garden or at the beach on a sunny weekend. We don’t all want to listen. Stick your earphones in.

Hogging the jacuzzi at the spa.

Good point. Wait for old people to die I guess? Makes a space for everyone to shuffle around. Could be a long wait...

I sort of see where you're going with the council house thing @SpringSunshineanddaffodils but it's just another stick to beat poor people with. If they can't buy their council house they remain paying rent forever, with no hope of ever having equity in their home, something that most people rely on in their retirement.

Also, not every council house is the mansion you're claiming them to be. I think you forget that these are people's homes - they have lives and belongings and there should be a reasonable expectation that they can continue those. Your kick them to the curb strategy is callous and a bit 'well they're poor what do you expect'.

If there are multiple dogs in the room it is worse. So coffee shops now may have 4-5 dogs at different tables and in the queue. Obviously their fur sheds and the places don’t wash all soft furnishings everyday, likewise trains have soft furnishings, clothes shops as well. It isn’t really acceptable to allow multiple dogs into these areas. Trains should have animal carriages.

Cismyfatarse · 28/04/2025 07:06

Eating hot smelly food on buses. All food and drink except water are banned on buses in Greece which is brilliant. I may still be recovering from a particularly pungent meat pie wafting down a bus at me.

And to add to that sometimes they approach you, whether they’re on a leash or not - it’s hard to get away in a confined space like a train. often you may have reserved seats and there’s no free ones you can move to. If you have an allergy, are afraid or just don’t like them you can easily end up being very close to one against your will.

I chose to stand for the rest of a recent journey because a man with a dog came and put his dog next to him in the seat in front of me. It then squeezed its head in the space between the seats so was facing me.

Close enough to drool on me or lick me if it chose to. I wouldn’t even have wanted a human head in that space breathing on me tbh let alone a dog.

I often see dogs sat on the seats in the underground too.

I agree there should be carriages where pets are allowed and ones where they’re not like they do in some European countries.

1 - Plastic grass in private gardens - I wouldn't do an outright ban as it does have its place on certain sports pitches and public areas. But noone needs it instead of a lawn, leaching micro plastics into the environment and eventually ending up in landfill.

2 - Second jobs and the ability to accept large donations by MPs. Looking at you Nigel.

3 - My non serious one but pet peeve - people from urban areas who drive 4x4s who come to Cumbria and have no idea how to navigate single track roads. I'm fed up of reversing hundreds of metres just because you're afraid a branch might scratch your car and you've never driven off road.

Wolfpa · 28/04/2025 07:37

1- killing animals for no reason, I am specifically thinking spiders as they are the ones I see most being killed unnecessarily but it goes for all animals.

2- spreading misinforming, we have so much information at our fingertips we should be using it before forming our opinions.

3- zero tolerance for drinking and driving. The current laws on it are too loose we should remove any doubt and say if you have had any alcohol at all you can’t drive, like the Scottish rules.

Ah how come? My tube journey is improved 1000% if there is dog in the carriage 😄 🐶

If you really want a nose pressed against your crotch in a crowded carriage, I'm sure one of your fellow passengers would oblige.

No... because my dog hasn't killed a sparrow? or a wild rabbit?
Dogs are not recognised as being responsible for killing 40 to 70 million birds each year?!

Sorry, what on earth is your point?

You compare cat and dog ownership saying that you take responsibility for your dog, implying that cat owners do not.

There is no legal imperative to control your dog so it doesn’t kill vermin, I doubt anyone would even bat an eyelid. I was just taking issue with you saying ‘as I do with my dog’ as if dog owners are more responsible.

In relation to birds, the rspb famously refute that cats are an issue, something cat haters love to conveniently ignore.

The UK’s largest bird charity, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), is not particularly concerned about the impact of cats on the British mainland. Instead it focuses on what it says is driving UK bird declines: global warming, intensive agriculture and expanding towns and cities leading to habitat and food loss. “While we know that cats do kill large numbers of birds in UK gardens, there’s no evidence this is affecting decline in the same way that these other issues are,” said a spokesperson.
A big reason why they are less worried is the evidence that cats primarily take “the doomed surplus”: weak or injured birds likely to die anyway. In 2008, Baker led a study in Bristol showing that birds killed by cats on average had less fat and muscle than birds killed by collisions with windows. While there could be other explanations – such as birds having less fat in the morning when cats tend to pounce – Baker says that the fat and muscle scores were so low that the birds were “in dire trouble before they got killed”. Another study from 2000 found that cat-killed birds in Denmark had smaller spleens, indicative of a weaker immune system.
