How much is your weekly shop?

We’re a family of 4 and ship at Sainsbury’s. It’s costing around £170 a week and o just don’t see how this is sustainable, especially as prices are only going to go up. What do you pay and where do you shop?

I do a weekly shop in Tesco where I spend around £150pw, that's for everything though not just food. Then once per month, I'll spend around £100 in Iceland to fill up the freezer. We're 4 adults and a dog.

You need to ask what people buy rather than only how much they spend otherwise it's a lot of random numbers

If you think you're spending more than you want to or can afford then you need to find the same food at a cheaper price or buy different things

I'm always baffled about what use knowing what strangers spend is, can you explain?

Craftysue · 26/04/2025 17:01

About £100 a week. Mainly Sainsburys with a few bits from M&S . 3 adults, 1 vegan, 1 vegetarian and 1 meat eater who is happy with meat free for most meals.

BrunchBarBandit · 26/04/2025 17:04

I’ve just spent £220 in Morrisons this afternoon and I’m not sure it will last 7 days but I have stocked up on cleaning and dishwasher stuff and there’s some wine for tonight. That’s for 2 adults and 2 teens & 1 dog. DH is veggie and DS12 has ARFID, so meals are complicated. It covers all breakfasts and lunches as well as dinners. We have takeaway once a week and eat out once or twice a month.

I looked back through my banking app and it’s £800-£1000 per month on shopping for at least the last 12 months.

Dullmary · 26/04/2025 17:05

About £100 a week from Ocado for 2 adults and 2 cats. I thought I massively overspent too.

MidoriNoRingo · 26/04/2025 17:06

So my kids are 10 and 3.

our meal planning for this week is:

prawn and chorizo linguine
chicken and mushroom pie with mash
pork belly with winter veg
chicken Katsu
meatballs with mash and peas
Beef stroganoff with rice
Roast Chicken

Average of £60 - two adults. Usually three weeks Tesco and one week Lidl. No top ups.

UnreadyEthel · 26/04/2025 17:07

Around £90-£100 per week for a family of four including packed lunches for three of us (eldest DC gets free school meals). We live too far away from any shops to do top-up shops, and usually get a Tesco delivery once a week. We cook from scratch, usually from recipes, and do a meal plan every week as we’re doing the Tesco order.

Frazzled2108 · 26/04/2025 17:08

£80 max for a family of 4. Mostly shop at Aldi

LoafofSellotape · 26/04/2025 17:08

I could easily spend that in Sainsburys, I'm horrified at the prices so not surprised your bill is so much OP.

CraftyGin · 26/04/2025 17:09

About £100 for three adults per week (although shop daily). Sainsbury's and occasionally Aldi or Waitrose.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 26/04/2025 17:10

Around £70-80 between Tesco and M&S and Costco- 1 adult,1 child 1 pet- I tend to buy steak/ salmon /king prawns in Costco I find it saves so much. We get a takeaways once a week about £20

Peanut91 · 26/04/2025 17:10

Family of 4 soon to be 5 and shop at Sainsburys. Currently we have a budget of £125 a week which we struggle to keep within week in week out. Once baby arrives we will be increasing the budget to £150 a week

Phoebepeeby · 26/04/2025 17:11

That’s a lot of meat/fish. No wonder it’s costing lots.

MadCattery · 26/04/2025 17:11

American here and our food bill has gone up at least 25% in the last couple of years. Two of us, adults, at home now, and easily $100 a week, which would be about equal to 75 pounds. We don't waste a single scrap, either. Don't eat beef or pork, and use a vacuum sealer so I can buy "family packs" cheaper and freeze smaller portions for us. Always shop at Aldi first, because our regular grocery (Publix) is twice as much. We do have a lot of local produce markets here in Florida, so fresh fruit and veg can be cheaper. We tend to build our meals around seasonal deals. Yay! It's almost ratatouille season here! And corn on the cob is very inexpensive now. We shop the deals and sales to keep it down.

DisapprovingSpaniel · 26/04/2025 17:12

Too much! 3 adults and it's between £150 to £200+ a week.

Walkthelakes · 26/04/2025 17:13

I try to do the supermarket under 150 for 6 of us and a dog. We do a top up shop and pay for school dinners for 2 kids. Can’t ok from scratch but like good quality food. I normally go Aldi and buy ingredients rather than ready made stuff. A free years ago I could easy do it under £100

Family of 4 (two teens), Sainsbury’s- £100 on groceries.
Often buy other stuff that is on offer even if we don’t need it just to stock up relatively cheaply - toilet rolls, laundry detergent, dishwasher tablets etc - so can quickly get to up £150+

ThatLemonPanda · 26/04/2025 17:20

We put £265 into a food account for human food 2 adults and our dogs food comes out on a DD at £30 per month. We don’t drink don’t get much meat and so we normally have money left at the end of each month. We are strict though and do one Tesco delivery per week and no top up shops

Doseofreality · 26/04/2025 17:23

About £250 per week.

Weekday breakfasts tend to be toast or croissants with coffee or orange juice. Weekends we go for avocado toast, bacon, maybe eggs and Sunday is always pan au chocolates, chocolates and vats of coffee.

Weekday lunches - sandwiches, bagels to take to work and school. Lots of fruit which I find pushes the weekly spend up. We eat out for lunch most weekends.

Examples of dinners - salmon, pastas, chicken kebabs, steak salads.

We eat well and there’s a lot of hidden extras like bottled water, yoghurts, olive oil and seasonings, crisps and I spend a small fortune on houmous!

RichWithNoSelfControl · 26/04/2025 17:27

We don't do weekly shops, we do one large online shop once a month, includes everything, fridge, freezer, cupboards, cleaning, hygiene and treats. Usually around £250/300, 90% of the time being Sainsbury's, recently tried Asda, wouldn't recommend if I'm honest.
We then do a top up shop usually twice a month for things like fresh milk/cheese/fruit coming in at around £20. So all in all let's say £350 a month.

Family of 4. Two adults and two young children.

If you divide that by an average of 4 weeks, it's just under £90 a week if my math is correct (probably not)

takealettermsjones · 26/04/2025 17:28

Between £150 and £200 per week, two adults and three kids, shopping from Asda and a local farm shop. Prices have definitely gone up a lot in the last year.

I cook meals from scratch but I buy a lot of conveniently packaged snacks just due to time constraints - so things like individually wrapped bits of cheese, little bags of mini breadsticks, fruit leather, etc. I also buy a lot of pre-prepared veg, both fresh and frozen. I am pescatarian and I do most of the cooking, so while we eat veggie a lot we also eat a lot of fish/seafood, which is expensive.

How do you manage only topping up milk and fruit every two weeks? Genuinely asking as it only lasts 3-4 days in my house!

Visiblyabove25 · 26/04/2025 17:31

2x Adults, 3x kids - we aim to stick to £120 a week but it can creep up to more like £150 if it's a week we need buy washing powder/ dishwasher tablets etc.

But we do spend more on topping up bread/ milk/ fruit/ snacks over the course of the week. So, I'd say our total food spend is closer to £180 - £200 a week.

OoLaOoLa · 26/04/2025 17:33
