How much is your weekly shop?

We’re a family of 4 and ship at Sainsbury’s. It’s costing around £170 a week and o just don’t see how this is sustainable, especially as prices are only going to go up. What do you pay and where do you shop?

OP posts:
ZepherinDrouhin · 26/04/2025 16:47

I did a combination shop at Lidl & Sainsbury's today including cleaning products. I didn't have much change left over from £150 & there's 4 of us including 2 teens plus a cat.

I spent €84 today. Receipt attached. I had bits and pieces at home already so didn’t need to buy EVERYTHING. But I average about 65-70per week.

Sorry I forgot to add this is food for the week for me and my two dc (who I have this weekend and on weds through to Sunday) my DP will stay with me on tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday night. I also already had ingredients at home.
so the plan is
Sunday (tomorrow) - shepherds pie (4 of us)
Monday - chicken burgers (me and dp)
Tuesday - bacon pasta bake (me and dp)
wednesday- leftover pasta bake for me and 2dc or carobonara if there’s not enough left.
thursday- green Thai chicken and courgette curry with rice/poppadoms
friday- pasta with pork mince sauce
Saturday-chicken fajitas and rice
sunday- beef stirfry

I’ll need to buy lettuce and coconut milk. I forgot those.

AdoraBell · 26/04/2025 16:48

£150 next week.

Numbersareeasier · 26/04/2025 16:48

Around £150-£170 a week at Aldi, family of 6. I really would like to spend less but can’t seem to manage it. Kids are very fussy eaters so that makes things more difficult

doodleschnoodle · 26/04/2025 16:49

£150 a week for two adults and two DC, but I could easily knock a bit off by comprising on quality or picking cheaper meals to cook, reducing meat intake more, etc. That does include usual cleaning materials etc.

MrsTWH · 26/04/2025 16:50

Anywhere between £180-£300 per week for two adults and two teenagers, plus 2 cats. Average is probably £200. However I am catering for one vegetarian, 2 meat eaters and one autistic ARFID sufferer so am basically making 3 separate meals every single time. I try to cook everything I can from scratch where possible to minimise use of UPFs, I like to buy higher welfare meat etc. My child with ARFID basically only eats branded processed crap unfortunately.

this would include toiletries and cat food/litter and cleaning products!

MoggetsCollar · 26/04/2025 16:50

£130-150 pw on Ocado for 2 adults a teen and a cat.

northernballer · 26/04/2025 16:51

£190 per week at Sainsburys.

2 adults and 3 teenagers (so adult portions).

AhBiscuits · 26/04/2025 16:51

Wow that's a lot. I spend about £80 for my family of 4. One kid still gets free school lunches and DH often buys lunch out in the week.

TortolaParadise · 26/04/2025 16:51

£150 - £200

MyJoyousKoala · 26/04/2025 16:53

4 adults and a small dog in our household and our food bill is about £170 per week as well. We also meal prep and cook from scratch.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 26/04/2025 16:53

Family of 3 - 2 adults and one hungry teenager!
Our diet is 2x meat or fish and 5x veggie or vegan.
We spend on average £100.- / week. This is Tesco and online bulk buying of things like rice, couscous and pulses as well soap, washing powder ect. So pay day is usually one big shop for the month of non perishables and then weekly top up of veg, bread & milk. (A 3kg bag of rice lasts 9-12 weeks so again costs are spread out evenly.)
I meal plan and cook from scratch as well as batch cooking- I usually have 2-3 meals in the freezer! So if things get tight, we still have decent meals.

Granted, my methods takes a lot of planning and storage space. But once it's up and running it's great!

If I were you, I would also look at food waste. Check how much you throw away or goes off and change what/ how you shop & cook.

Netcam · 26/04/2025 16:54

Averages about £200pw, 2 adults, 1 teen. Mix of Ocado, Abel & Cole, Riverford, local veg box. occasional Suma delivery. Cook from scratch and mainly organic. Food is our biggest expense.

HippeePrincess · 26/04/2025 16:54

We budget £500pm/£115pw for a family of 5, shop mainly at Aldi, inc nappies and a few bottles of wine per week. Doesn’t include 2 children’s lunches though as we get FSM run on.

bibliotek · 26/04/2025 16:54

Totallytoti · 26/04/2025 16:19

I do M&S weekly and it’s about £100 sometimes less. I get an absolute ton of stuff as I also meal prep. Quite honestly I find food very, very cheap in this country.
we are also a family of 4, two young kids.
what kind of stuff are you making op, do you meal plan?

What’s a day of meals for you, do you mind me asking?

My Tesco is much more expensive than that

morellamalessdrama · 26/04/2025 16:56

SallyWD · 26/04/2025 16:21

We spend about £150 on the big shop but there are always a couple of top up shops that bring the weekly total to about £200 😬

This is exactly the same as us. Two adults, two teens and a cat.

frozendaisy · 26/04/2025 16:56

Everything for the week including butcher, milkman, lunches away from home, treats, drinks and alcohol.
2 adults, 2 teens, plus additional teens
Buying certain veg organic
£200 all in easily usually less.

Which broken down is £50 per person per week
Just over £7 per day per person

So drinks, treats, food, toiletries, snacks, alcoholic, good meat, milk delivered, full fruit bowl, organic veg.

Which I don’t think it that bad.

Ladamesansmerci · 26/04/2025 16:57

Atm for 2 adults and my 11 month old, about £70 a week. I reckon maybe £90 a week when she gets older. But tbh there are some things we could do to cut it down!

notsureyetcertain · 26/04/2025 16:57

We do Tesco and it’s about £130 for 3 adults and 1 child. Normally nip to locals shop once or twice too.

i use to shop at Aldi and it’s about was around £100 but then I’d have to nip to Tesco for the stuff I couldn’t get there and price would be similar

Reallyyyyyy · 26/04/2025 16:57

Family of 6. We spend about £220 a week. But that includes cleaning supplies, hygiene products and also 4 packed lunches. I cook from scratch as much as possible.

Hydrangeadangerranger · 26/04/2025 16:58

£100ish per week for 2 adults and 2 hungry teens. I don’t skimp too much, I wonder what people are buying that I’m forgetting about!!

nodramaplz · 26/04/2025 16:58

75-100 every 10 days.
Buying extras through the week .
i buy a big bag of potatoes, mash chip and roast them even do fancy cubes sometimes.

That’s 2 adults 2 children

i don’t cut back. Includes biscuits and crisps and ice cream etc

Thatroomismine · 26/04/2025 16:59

I live on a very tight budget (single parent, ill health pension and disability). I therefore have to be strict with my budget and meal plan every meal, bulk buy, dont buy brands, buy on offer, I have a delivery every 10 days (delivery stops the impulse buys but you can't do yellow sticker so may or may not help). I batch cook, have a cheap night at least once a week. It's me and two older teens, eldest eats for two as is also very sporty. I spend £50-60 every 10 days, upto £70 in school holidays. You need some cheap recipes in your rotation ours include:
Jambalaya
fishcakes or Pork chops with new potatoes And vegetables,
Tomato, chorizo and red pepper pasta,
Chicken curry,
Savoury rice with pan fried meat,
chilli with rice or jacket potatos,
Spaghetti bol,
Shepherd's pie,
Nandos rice with spicy chicken,
Jacket cheese and beans,
Sausage or chicken pasta,
scrambled eggs, beans on toast,
Fajitas,
rice and bean bouritos,
chicken, veg and roast potatoes and Stuffing.

You said 'I don't know where I'm going wrong' so tell us a bit about what a couple of days of food in your house look like.

My weekly shop is done in bits and bobs and in the end will exceed yours but we're also high earners so I'm not watching. But if I needed to feed us on £100pw I definitely could (and have!) - veg Thai curry, spaghetti Bol, egg for breakfast, fruit snack (apple or banana), baked potato. No ready meals.
